Facebook – YWAM Port of Peace Facebook – YWAM Les Cayes Facebook – YWAM Saint Marc Crisis in Mozambique In December last year Pope Virgilio and his family reached Pemba with a group of 35 – 40 people after an arduous journey of about 2-weeks through the forest in the province of Cabo Delgado in North East Mozambique. They joined thousands of others who have been displaced and forced to move to safe places in North East Mozambique. Mozambique has been involved in an insurgency by Islamic extremists since 2017. The Islamic-state linked insurgents killed at least 3,200 people and displaced another 800,000 at the end of last year. Many of those who were displace fled to the city of Pemba. Currently there are no international aid organisations operating in Pemba, and some missions organisations have already left for their own safety. YWAM has a small team in Pemba doing what they can to help in terms of food / water / soap / mask distribution, as well as building shelters for the refugees fleeing into Pemba. In addition to the mercy work that the YWAM team has been engaged in they have also been leading groups in fellowship and Bible studies. They have been using audio Bibles that have been produced in the local language as most of the refugees are illiterate. One of the groups that they have been working with is Pope Virgilio and his family. Since they started working with Pope Virgilio he has joined a church and has been baptized. The team is asking that you Please pray for the people in Pemba/Cabo Delgado. Please pray for the safety of the YWAM team and their children, and wisdom for them in this desperate situation. The team have been caring for around 2000 refugees with food and essential supplies, and have started building simple homes/shelters for some of them. It costs $2 per day per person to provide food/essential supplies, and $2000 to build a simple house (photo right below), which can house 15 people, who otherwise sleep on the street. YWAM England is working with the team and if you want to help you can give via the YWAM England website at https://www.ywamengland.org/donations. designate “For YWAM Pemba”. When you do email Jon Armstrong to let him know and he will make sure 100% of anything you give reaches the relief work in Pemba. Miami Condo Collapse Support ministry Last week a 40-year old condo building collapse, leaving more than 150 people missing in the rubble. While the first responders work to try to rescue and find the residence of the building, the request for prayer and spiritual / emotional support went out. In coordination with many local churches and the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, Youth With A Mission brought in a 40-person group to minister, pray, and provide spiritual care for the victims and their families. Things are not looking good at the moment for the people who were in the building, and there is much despair with the families, and our prayers go out to the people affected and the people there ministering. You can read more, and follow developments, over at the Christianity Today web-site. YWAM Paris Connect Campus Update Last year we shared with you about the YWAM Paris and their ministry in that beautiful city. We also shared about their desire for their own campus. YWAM Saint Marc, Haiti Food Distribution Earlier this month YWAM Saint Marc in Haiti packed over 400 bags of food and filled a Mack truck with items to deliver out to the 5th section! Their students also filled 800 pieces of paper with words of encouragement and Bible verses to give out as well. It has been a tough few years since the major earthquake that ravaged the nation, hurricanes that have hit since the, and rampant corruption from local governments and international NGOs. Throughout this the people in the 5th section have suffered. Roads in the nation are often blocked, and when roads are blocked it makes delivering food to sell extremely difficult. The team was very thankful for the opportunity to serve this beautiful community. The best place that I have found to find out more about the YWAM Saint Marc, Haiti ministry is on their Facebook page. YWAM Derby Take Away Food Ministry Speaking about food ministry, YWAM Derby does a local food distribution ministry. Watch this video on YouTube. Create Thailand – The Gift of Comics In the summer of 2019, thousands of Mongolians were able to hear the good news through an outreach initiative of YWAM called “Bless Mongolia.” The goal was to put a Mongolian Bible in every household, along with other materials, including a list of Internet links to online resources in the Mongolian language. Create International Taiwan was honoured to participate in this initiative by providing an online comic book, “Prisoner of Hope,” which clearly presents the gospel through the eyes of Queen Sorghaghtani, the daughter-in-law of Genghis Khan. This powerful comic book was produced by the staff and 14 students of the Frontier Comics Seminar (FCS), led by Jason Kelly, which trains artists to use their skill and talent to reach the unreached by producing indigenous comic books. Create International Taiwan has been producing mostly animated films since it started in 2013 through the School of Cartooning and Animation for Missions (SoCAM), but in 2019 they spun their comics training into that new school, pioneered by Jason. Working directly with Mongol leaders on the field, they were able to craft a powerful story about a convicted prisoner who receives Christ through the stories of the seven commands of Jesus as told by the Nestorian Mongol Queen. In 2020, a second comic was produced through the FCS for the Hindi speakers of India, which uses the holiday Diwali as a cultural bridge for the good news. Although the project is still in production, an English version of the comic, called “Gift of Light,” has been completed and is available to view online. You can check out more about this exciting story, and also view the amazingly well done comics / graphic stories, over on the Create Taiwan web-site, createthaiwan.com. Each outreach team will be lead by an experienced YWAM staff member and together with the participants will work either in evening or morning outreaches. Each team will also have a one day off where they will have the opportunity to explore the city and do team building activities together. To wrap everything up, there will be one day of debrief in each team and with all of the teams online. This year, Summer Nightlife Outreach will focus on the following five locations: Ibiza, Spain Albufeira, Portugal Hvar, Croatia Thessaloniki, Greece Vama Veche, Romania To each of these five locations they will send a team of 10-15 participants, led by experienced YWAM staff. They are needing: English teachers Computer trainers Art/Music therapy Sports (Basketball and Soccer) Children activities through crafts etc. They are able to get teams into the country through their NGO status. The floods have killed more than 27 people, and have left hundreds homeless and without electricity and food. The Kid’s Ark Ministry has suffered from substantial damage. The buildings were badly damaged by the flash floods with the walls, foundations, and ceilings all needing repairs. Until these repairs are complete the buildings are not habitable. Kid’s Ark provides education, medical support, and provides programs for people with disabilities in the Hera area. The loss of these buildings will badly affect their onsite operations. The Need for Bible Translation “There are approximately 7,100 living languages spoken on earth today. As I write this introduction there are some 1,600+ living languages that still do not have a single verse of the Scriptures translated. These 1,600+ languages need to be translated to reach zero.” David Hamilton, Youth With A Mission. Over on the Frontier Missions web-site you can read many stories of how God is working in the nations through Youth With A Mission. One such story is about people who have no written language, and no Bible translation. There were a few believers in that group, and those believers did not have a way in their own language to speak about, and pray in their own mother tongue. The strength and power of praying to God in your own language is something that many of us take for granted, but one that many do not know how to do. There are over 1600 languages with no Scripture, and it is very much on God’s heart to see Scripture in every language, and understood by every person. There are many ways that we can work to End Bible Poverty Now. You can read more about this story, and some of the ways that people are working to end Bible poverty over at ywamfm.org. Each eruption has sent ash into the sky as well as small and large stones which have destroyed many homes. They are continuing to expect more eruptions and pyroclastic flows in the coming days and weeks. The YWAM St. Vincent and Grenadines centre is on the Island of Mayreau and currently not in danger of the volcano, but there are many staff and members from St. Vincent who are assisting with the relief efforts at the local shelters in the safe zones on the main island. The shelters and volunteers are in desperate need of supplies. If you head over to the YWAM St. Vincent and the Grenadines Facebook page you can see how you could help, donate, and pray for the people. There have been many people evacuated from the island, but some of the evacuations have been hampered by some of the neighbouring island nations, so prayer about this is vital so that the people can be assisted and our YWAM staff can best serve the victims of the volcano. YWAM Medical Ships Constructing Port Moresby Campus After ten years of operation in Papua New Guinea with medical ships and land-based teams, YWAM Medical Ships Australia & Papua New Guinea (YWAM MS) is delighted to be expanding their work by establishing a training and outreach campus in Port Moresby. The Port Moresby campus will be established as a satellite campus of the Australian, YWAM Medical Ships Training. Vocational training programs will be offered in a range of areas, including healthcare, hospitality, administration, faith development, and media. The property for the new training campus is just five kilometres from the Port Moresby city centre and was originally built as a water sports complex for the 2015 South Pacific Games. The site has unfortunately been quite neglected and has needed quite a bit of work to clean up the property and to rebuild. Renovations are currently underway to re-purpose the site as a vibrant training campus for young people. The first phase of construction includes student accommodation, kitchen, bathrooms, and training facilities. The development will happen in a series of stages, with the eventual dream is to include a medical centre, radio station, a dental semi-trailer for local schools, and an outreach support centre to server YWAM Medical Ship’s work across the nation. Since then there have been many people killed and the army is attacking many Karen areas. This has lead to thousands of civilians being displaced and having to hide in the forest. Some of these groups are being shelled by the military and are running for their lives. There are over 5000 Internally Displaced People (IDPs) known to be hiding in the forests at this time. The people are trying to flee to refugee camps in Thailand, but those camps and the boarder are closed off. As the fighting continues in the cities the number of IDPs and refugees is only increasing. Right now there are four new refugee camps forming close to the Thai / Burmese border. Australian Mercy, a ministry of Youth With A Mission, can not get aid into the cities at the time because of the violence happening there, but they can get aid into the IDP camps forming on the boarder. On the Australian Mercy web-site you can see what is needed to meet the needs of the Internally Displaced People. The needs include food, clothing, medicines, and basic aid. The people are desperate, and the situation there is getting worse, please take the time to pray and consider how you can help … australianmercy.org YWAM Thailand Update Staying in South East Asia we have this update from YWAM in Chiang Mai, Thailand, and what God did in 2020 … Watch this video on YouTube. Gleaning for the Hungry Summer 2021 Plans Gleanings for the Hungry is a mercy ministry of Youth With A Mission with a mission to feed the hungry of the world, both physically and spiritually. A large part of fulfilling their mission is the procurement and production of shelf-stable food. In the summer, they dry peaches and nectarines that are not pristine enough for sale. Year round, they produce a dehydrated soup mix, mostly from donated products. Everything they produce is given free of charge to partner ministries around the world, to be distributed in impoverished areas, with the love of Jesus. and they are starting to gear up for the new 2021 season … Watch this video on YouTube. You can visit gleanings.org to find out more about their food distribution ministry … YWAM Frontier Missions – Disciple Making Movements During last year, and coming into this year, a lot of how YWAM has done it’s training has had to change because of COVID-19, and the many restrictions that have been brought about because of it. One of the ways that it has changed is that many YWAM locations have developed online training resources. One of these online courses that is coming up in July is the Getting Started in Disciple Making Movements course, being offered by YWAM Frontier Missions. This online course will be run from July 7 – October 7 and will help you go from potentially feeling confused, busy, and overwhelmed by the task of reaching the unreached, to feeling inspired, hopeful, and full of faith that God is able to multiply disciples through you. The course will work to help you to: Develop a step by step faith-filled plan for prayer saturation, Discover simple, but proven, evangelism strategies Find local influencers (Persons of Peace). Learn to stay focused on what key fruitful activities Start your first Disciple-Making group. YWAM Budapest Even during the Soviet communist era YWAM was sending short term teams into Hungary to pray and discretely distribute Gospel literature. The first YWAMers to make their home in Hungary was in the late 80’s, and with the fall of communism in 1989 YWAM began to send teams to pray, connect with pastors, and seek open doors for the Gospel. They have been operating continually in the nation since then, and this some of what they are currently engaged in … Watch this video on YouTube. You can head over to ywambudapest.org to find out more about their ministry. Coffee One of the things that myself, and probably many other people in YWAM, can attribute to our time in ministry in a love, and possible addiction, to coffee. For me it started when I first started staffing the discipleship training school, in addition to working in other ministry areas like communication and IT. Since then my taste has become a bit more refined, much less instant coffee, and coffee ministry has really opened the doors for communication at many locations around the world. This includes the coffee ministry that YWAM Budapest runs … Watch this video on YouTube. The location that I did my DTS at was located in Townsville, Australia. Like me, they have become a lot more refined in the coffee that they offer, and last year they even opened a coffee shop in the centre of the city. They are definitely alone in combining ministry and coffee, as we hear from YWAM Lakeside, Montana: Watch this video on YouTube. YWAM Hernut in Germany is another ministry wanting to expand their coffee ministry into the community: Watch this video on YouTube. YWAM in the Gold Coast of Australia runs a coffee van outreach to the people in their community: I’m sure there are many other locations around the world that are also combining coffee and ministry. I went over to ywam.org and did a search for “coffee” and it came up with 73 programs and places around the ministry. I’m sure that not all of them, but it is fun to see some of what God is doing. Theology and Coffee With all of our talk about coffee in this episode I want to highlight a recent study done by our friends over at the Babylon Bee. The results of the study was that they found that the stronger the coffee, the more sound the theology. While the specific study was in relation to churches, it wouldn’t be out of the question to say that there is most likely also a correlation at YWAM Centres around the world where the stronger the coffee, the more sound the theology … Feedback Well, thank you very much for joining with us on this episode of the YWAM News Show. That message from Mark Anderson is one of many messages from YWAM Kansas City’s YouTube Channel. YWAM South Sudan I’ve been updating you through the years with the work that YWAM has been doing in South Sudan. Back in September 2016 the civil war degenerated so far that the YWAM Centre in … had to be evacuated. This month the YWAM missionaries were able to return to their centre in Yei and see how much damage was done to their centre and the community around it. Many of the homes, as well as the primary school, have been completely stripped out, and other building have been set on fire. They are asking God for wisdom for how to move forward and rebuild, and are asking that we would join with them in praying about what the future holds for the ministry there. YWAM South Sudan on Facebook Mae-la preschools under threat of closure Mae-la camp is a refuge camp located in Thailand on the Burmese border. It is home to about 60,000 mostly Karen refugees from Burma. At the camp there are thousands of children, and last year there were 17 pre-schools at the camp. The preschools provide a preschool education as well as a nutritional supplements program that is essential for these children to thrive. As of this year all large Non-Government organisations have ceased, and has put all of these pre-schools at risk of closing. These closures will not only take away the only early childhood educational foundations available to thousands of children in Mae-la camp but will also destroy the front line where basic health and learning difficulties are picked up and a safe place for women who are experiencing stress in their relationships is taken away. Australian Mercy, a ministry of Youth With A Mission, and a couple of other smaller NGOs are trying to hold the line but at the present time their resources are not anywhere big enough to fund all 17 preschools. At the moment, Australian Mercy funds one preschool and a teacher training program that is shared by all the other preschools. They also fund a nutritional supplements program that provides extra food to families and children who are at risk of malnutrition. They are currently seeking to raise an additional $20,000 per year to help fund four additional pre-schools, and for every $7000 above that they can fund one more school. You can visit the Australian Mercy web-site to see how you or your group could help, australianmercy.org. YWAM Tuen Mun YWAM Tuen Mun in Hong Hong has been diligently serving the people in that area of China. Watch this video on YouTube. Haiti Since the earthquake in Haiti in 2010 they nation has struggled to recover. Whether from outbreaks of infectious disease like Cholera, corruption, violence, and multiple hurricanes, they have been working to build back as a nation. As a ministry during this time Youth With A Mission has endeavoured to serve the wonderful people of Haiti through multiple ministry, and many locations around the country. This includes the latest launch, after 10 years of planning, praying, and preparing, of YWAM Port of Peace. YWAM Port of Prince was birthed out of another YWAM Location in Saint Mark and they are excited to see how God leads them, and what he has in store for them as the prepare their new campus to receive guests. Meanwhile YWAM Les Cayes Haiti is continuing with their building project to help facilitate future training and staff. God really is moving in the nation of Haiti, and providing for the ministry there, as we hear from this YWAM Cap-Haiti update: MV YWAM PNG Returns to Papua New Guinea After spending much of 2020 docked in their home port of Townsville, Australia, the MV YWAM PNG last week returned to Papua New Guinea after being invited back for the purpose of strengthening the delivery of essential healthcare to rural communities in PNG. Ken Mulligan, YWAM Medical Ships Australia Managing Director has stated that: “While the COVID situation is continually evolving, we plan to have the vessel in a state of readiness to respond flexibly in 2021 as circumstances evolve. The ship will initially dock in Port Moresby, with plans now underway to resume rural healthcare patrols to Western Province,”. YWAM MS also has a number of new land-based ventures underway for 2021 that will help strengthen the sister city relationship between Townsville and Port Moresby. “As a registered training organisation here in Townsville, it has been a dream for a long time to establish a satellite vocational training campus for young people in Port Moresby. I’m pleased to share that we are in the process of establishing a vibrant campus there at the moment that will combine vocational training with character development and service opportunities. “Approximately 90% of Port Moresby’s young people are unemployed. Our desire is to work in collaboration with PNG to help provide the skills, knowledge and innovation needed for PNG’s sustainable development. “We also recently acquired a fitted out dental and medical semi-trailer. We are actively working toward bringing the trailer into Port Moresby for the purpose of providing dental services, training opportunities, and health education to schools throughout the city,” said Mr Mulligan. Watch this video on YouTube. As Luzanne shared with us, you can watch all of the sessions from the time of celebration on the YWAM YouTube channel, youtube.com/user/ywam. YWAM Mozambique Movement of God When the first YWAM church planting team came to a Mozambique province in the mid-90s to reach the Yao people, they learned there were very few Yao churches or believers in that area. They were told the Yao people were the hardest and most difficult people group to reach. Now “churches are popping up like popcorn,” says Paul (not his real name) a local church planter and disciple maker. “This is a phrase that Paul likes to use a lot because he is overwhelmed with what God is doing,” says Shephen Mbewe, a former YWAM location leader in Mozambique. The Yao people are a tribe found in northern Mozambique, Malawi and parts of Tanzania in Africa. They are mainly Muslim, but their Islamic faith is also blended with folk and animistic beliefs. When the YWAM team first came to the area they began spending time praying for the Yao, developing friendships with them by playing sports—especially football—together, using mercy ministries such as caring for the sick and wounded as a way to enter communities and demonstrating the love of God to the Yao. It wasn’t long before people became interested. They began reading the Bible and sharing the Gospel message with other Yaos. The Gospel has also spread to the Makua Meto and Chewa tribes through the Yaos. “The people movement is growing with the awareness that others outside their own people group and tribe need to hear, too,” says Mbewe. “The Gospel is spreading like a wild bush fire, utterly unstoppable.” But coming to Christ hasn’t come without a price for some of these new believers, said Mbewe, who spent time with Carlos (not his real name), a man who had been beaten up by a best friend after he became a Christian. The best friend had been hired by Carlos’ own uncle and intended to kill the new Christian. However, instead of hating his former best friend for trying to kill him, Carlos forgave him and shared Christ’s love with him. The former best friend became a Christian and the two friends share Christ together. As new believers risk their lives to share God’s love, God is working through them. Recently there was a special Yao conference that brought in 750 people from the tribes of Yao, Makua Meto, Chewa, and Nyanja, during which 76 new believers were baptized. You can actually read more about the conference, and the movement of God in Mozambique, in the main article at ywam.org. YWAM Akosombo, Guana Youth With A Mission in Akosombo, Guana is currently operating an Isaiah Sustainable Development Center (ISDC). The base has undertaken ecological housing and vineyards as one of their projects. ISDC works with poor people in deprived rural areas to build descent but affordable houses using environmental friendly available materials like, clay, gravels, stones, sand and straw to inhabit, and also have vineyards in their backyards by planting fruit bearing trees like, mangoes, oranges and pawpaw to eat their fruits. They also work with Churches in poor and deprived areas that meet and worship under trees to construct descent but affordable Church buildings using environmental friendly materials like clay, stones, gravel, sand, and straw. Global Year of the Bible – 2020 The A.D. 2020 Year of the Bible movement aims to affirm and promote the value of the Bible for all people and calls for an end to Bible poverty at a time when over 1,600 languages still do not have a translation of the New and Old Testament. Six goals of the movement are to pray, translate publish, distribute, educate, and motivate people to engage in God’s word. On the last episode of the YWAM News Show we talked about YWAM’s work to End Bible Poverty. The A.D. 2020 Year of the Bible movement ties in with that vision and YWAM has partnered with organisations including Wycliffe Bible Translators, American Bible Society, Call2All, World Evangelical Alliance, and the Catholic Church. Watch this video on YouTube. You can connect with AD 2020 – Year of the Bible at bibleyear2020.com or on social media using the hashtag #bibleyear2020. Timor Leste (East Timor) Ministry Updates Australian Mercy, a part of Youth With A Mission, recently received updates from two of their projects in East Timor, Timor Leste, located in Hera and Bahareduk. The Kid’s Ark Hera project continues to grow and develop with its school, clinic, disabilities centre and potential hospital project. The staff are all very positive and there is a great buzz around the project site. Bahareduk is a community development project that is seeing significant engagement in the local community. 60 out the 70 houses in the village have been built, a part-time clinic has been established, and an agricultural project has been established. Last year Timor Leste celebrated the 20-year anniversary of the vote for independence. After that vote Indonesian militia groups moved through the country killing thousands and burning villages and cities. Unfortunately, even though that happened over 20 years ago, the devastation is still evident and Timor Leste remains one of the poorest countries, with one of the youngest populations, in the world today. The YWAM projects in East Timor are bringing communities that have suffered back to life. You can find out more about these projects, how you can help, and how you can give, on the Australian Mercies web-site, australianmercy.org. Refugee Update from YWAM Lesvos In a single 30-minute period of time last month in Lesvos, Greece 13 boats of refugees arrived. YWAM has been ministering there for many years and have reported that things have really started to pick up again. At the moment they are looking at record high numbers of refugees since 2015. Photos that the YWAM team has posted on their Facebook page show that almost 50% of the refugees on the boats are children. Lesvos is one of the main entry points for refugees wanted to enter Europe. There is less than 10km between the Turkish Coast and the Greek Island, so many people attempt the crossing in rubber rafts. YWAM is currently working in one of the primary refugee camps on the Island of Lesvos and you can find out more about their ministry on their web-site, ywamlesvos.com. Lesvos Update On Monday YWAM in Losvos posted an update about a deadly fire that has occurred at the refugee camp that they are working at. At least one person has died in the fire, but there are fears that there could be more possible victims. The fire started at one of the shipping containers housing refugees. The camp is designed to house 3000 refugees, but is currently housing about 12,000, which has lead to significant over crowding. In addition to the fire there have also been rioting by some of the migrants who are protecting what they say are slow response times by the firefighters. Christian Movements Among Refugees in Europe As refugees like those arriving in Lesvos have flooded into Europe since 2015 it has been a challenge to meet all of the needs of these people. While that has been happening there have been some amazing opportunities. The gospel is spreading, and new movements of Christians among the refugees have begun. Thousands of people who have come from unreached areas of the world are experiencing the transforming love of God! As teams and individuals are reaching out with God’s love to the refugees they have learned a few key lessons. The primary one of these lessons is to rely on the Holy Spirit’s work in the lives of new believers, it has been key to seeing the emerging Disciple Making Movement grow. Within the movement they have adopted these vital practices: Keep things simple so the new believers can easily apply it, copy it, and teach it to others. Show trust and confidence. Believe in them and affirm them in taking the lead. Everyone can share, participate, and help determine what needs to be done. Within the movement more than 2000 have been baptised and over 100 fellowships formed. Disciples and new fellowships are spreading rapidly across Europe and at the same time, when refugees return to their homelands, they share their faith and start fellowships there. There are many opportunities for reaching out to refugees. This could include refugees or immigrants in your own area, or you could look at joining a Youth With A Mission team working around the world. You can find our more about these opportunities on the YWAM Frontier Missions web-site, ywamfm.org. Rice Shortage in Mae La Camp, Thailand Since 2014 Australian Mercy, a part of Youth With A Mission, has been committed to assisting with the Mae La refugee camp on the Thailand/Burma border. The refugee camp currently houses about 50,000 Burmese refugees and is the largest refugee camp for the Burmese refugees in Thailand and is the home to a very large Karen population. Recently is was reported that the situation with rice in Mae-la is getting worse. They urgently need to raise funds for their nutritional supplements program in Mae-la camp. The refugees in Thailand do not feel safe to return to Burma, and for good reason. There is not a day where we do not hear about dangers from the Burmese military, land confiscations or landmines. As time progresses, food distributions in the camps continue to be reduced. To provide rice and tinned fish supplements for the rest of the year Australian Mercy needs to raise another $15,000, and if they want to extend the program to others, they need to raise much more. YWAMer assists in recovery from Brazil’s Deadliest Environmental Disaster Earlier this year Brazil experienced their deadliest environmental disaster when a dam near an iron ore mine in Brumadinho burst it’s barrier, flooding another dam below that one. Churches have been actively working in the area, comforting hundreds of families in grief, and working with public agents who are offering humanitarian relief to the people in the region. This incident is the deadliest mining disaster in the country, with around 300 people feared dead. The dam was inactive at the time, but was being used to hold back a sludge byproduct from iron ore mining. The sludge from the dam cut through the dam’s complex, nearby farms, and the neighbourhood where many of the workers lived. It destroyed houses and vehicles in the area. A YWAMer, Juliana Silveira, traveled from São Paulo to Brumadinho to help with the recovery in any what that she could. YWAM Venezuela Update I was able to get in touch with some of our staff working in Venezuela and they were able to send me this update for what is happening in their country. The main issue here right now is a potential civil war if the current regime in power goes more radical into stop all ways for a democratic process. It’s a little weird to explain but we have two presidents right now. One is Nicolas Maduro in power by controlling all ways to force his presidency and the other is Juan Guaido who is the National Assembly Speaker and in our constitution he is the Intern president but with none military support. The economy is crashing down every day with a inflation of 1.000.000 %. Lack of food and medicines for more than 60% of the population. All this makes more complicated the daily basis of life. YWAM is working among the poor and needy. Our base in Caracas has a feeding program that every week serves around 300 meals. We have also a base in Puerto La Cruz who is helping with kids ministry also on a feeding program. This Spring a new YWAM base will be born in the South Eastern side in Ciudad Bolivar. All YWAM locations are now providing Biblical training to end Bible poverty and there are DTS programs to start running this March, BBC and BSN as well. (the person I contacted is) part of a coaching circle for YWAM here, also in Dominican Republic at YWAM Villa Mella base. (That person) will be traveling to Dominican Republic next week to make connections for raising support for our feeding programs in Venezuela. Since I was in touch with them we have seen on the news increased conflict between the different factions in Venezuela, including government forces driving over and open firing on protesters. Let’s please pray for that country and the people there … New Vessel for YWAM Ships Aotearoa We are really excited to let you know that YWAM in New Zealand has been donated a new ship (audio from here) … You can hear and find out more about the new vessel and the ministry that they will be doing in the South Pacific on their web-site, ywamshipsaotearoa.org.nz. Faith and Conflict – Bosnia and Herzegovina YWAM Bosnia and Herzegovina, in partnership with YWAM Ireland, will be running the third Faith and Conflict experience starting on Thursday May,23 in Mostar. Starting in the beautiful, but divided city of Mostar, we will spend two days finding out what it is like to live in a city where, as they locals describe it, “the war has never ended”, 25 years after peace was signed. We also plan to take part in the GLOBAL OUTREACH DAY with an event with the local churches. We then move on to Sarajevo, a city rebuilt, but which still has the scars of the siege which took place here in the 1990s. We will experience some of what it was like to live here during that time, but also explore more of how “faith” caused the conflict and what we can learn from their experience in our own journeys of faith and forgiveness. Relational Fundraising Course Everyone in Youth With A Mission is a volunteer, and our financial support comes from people, organisations, and churches who partner with us in ministry through financial sponsorships and fundraising. To be released into missions every YWAMer needs a financial and prayer team behind them, and there are resources made available to assist in that. Terry Sherman has developed a free, on-line Relational Fundraising course that has been made available to YWAM staff and students on the YWAM eLearning platform. The course is designed to equip YWAMers to build a team of ministry partners who will financially support them in ministry. The Online course is designed around 4-modules Introduction – Talking about the vital need for this sort of training, share some of Terry’s own experiences from her early years, explain why fundraising is done in a relational way in YWAM, and set the stage for changing people’s mindset about raising support. The Biblical View of Fundraising – Money is a controversial topic. How we were raising in our families and cultures mostly determines how we think about money. The Bible talks more about money than almost any other subject, but most of us haven’t learned God’s perspective on it. It’s essential that we learn His ways regarding money, and to understand the spiritual dynamics that come into play when we step out to invite partnership for Kingdom purposes. Essential Tools to Communicate Vision – Vision leads the way in fundraising! Communicating vision well is essential to inviting people to partner with us. Students will explore different tools to help them better communicate their vision for mission. Create your Personal Fundraising Plan – This final module shows students how they can create their own plan and strategy for raising their FULL amount of support that they need to do ministry. You can sign up for free to this do-it-yourself, at your own pace course, at the YWAM eLearning web-site at ywamelearning.com. You can contact us, subscribe to future episodes, leave comments, and find links to all the stories we talk about in the show notes for this podcast at ywampodcast.com/113… Stories: Cyclone Idai in Mozambique Cyclone Idai crossed the coast in central Mozambique on the night of March 14, 2019. The cyclone had sustained winds of 195 km/h (120 mph) and damaged or destroyed thousands of structures. The strong winds were accompanied by heavy rain and flooding throughout Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and Malawi. It has been estimated that there are over 1000 deaths attributed to the cyclone so far, with some estimating that it could reach into the tens of thousands dead. Around 1.7 million people are affected across South East Africa, with 100,000 people needing urgent rescue near the city of Beira. There is no running water or electricity in much of the area, and many homes have been swept away and roads destroyed by floods. Over 400,000 Mozambicans are estimated to now be homeless. There are reports of cholera in the area, and there is risk of other outbreaks, including malaria, which is already increasing. Two Youth With A Mission centres have been affected by this natural disaster. Thankfully no YWAM staff or students have reportedly lost their lives, but they are trying to recover from the shock of the disaster. Both locations have had the majority of their buildings severely damaged. YWAM Beira runs a home for 29 boys and young men and a community school for over 600 students. Classrooms, dorms and other facilities have all been damaged. YWAM Dondo runs a preschool for 68 children, a laboratory to diagnose malaria and a HIV patient care program and pastors seminars and much more. The classrooms, accommodation, laboratory, and clinic have all been damaged. There are also many people in the communities around the Youth With a Mission locations that are in desperate need of help. Youth With A Mission is engaging in a unified response to this crisis. YWAM has linked up with RescueNet and Mercy Air to ensure that they are giving the best response possible. Mercy Air has already done a flyover assessment and RescueNet Europe is on their way to provide some of the necessary assistance. Watch this video on YouTube. To allow for a swift and coordinated flow of resources YWAM Southern Africa has set-up a dedicated office managed by John Sulter and Dave Peter at YWAM Muizenberg, South Africa. The office will manage donations and communications for people wanting to donate to help, and for people or teams who may wish to volunteer in the rebuilding effort. You can contact the office directly to find out how to donate and help at firstname.lastname@example.org. The situation in Mozambique is very serious. We ask that you would please be generous towards our brothers and sisters in Christ in Mozambique. They are in desperate need of food, water, shelter, and medical supplies. (source) There are regular updates coming to us from the teams in South East Africa, and we will be updating you in the upcoming shows so that you can know what’s going on and how you can help. YWAM Lebanon USA Fire The YWAM Lebanon, Pennsylvania base had an accidental fire on the morning of March 27. At the time there were 17 people in the building. All 17 people evacuated the building without any injuries, but the entire building is destroyed. The Send Report In the last news show we shared with you about the Send. Reports from The Send were extremely positive with: Over 70,000 Christians gathered in Orlando for the Send, including many from Youth With A Mission, including our founder Loren Cunningham. A report from The Send said that, “At The Send, we are calling every believer to take action. So far 16,656 have committed to fasting, 2,145 commitments to reaching High Schools, 1,878 committed to Universities, 4,134 committed to reaching their neighborhood. 482 have responded to the gospel.” Schools: Jesus’ last commandment to us was to: … go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. (Mat. 28: 19-20) Anyone that tell you not to go out and tell people about Jesus is telling you to disobey what Jesus actually told us to do. Youth With A Mission is all about “Knowing God and Making Him Known”, as such much of our training and ministries are built around that … Muslim World School of Frontier Missions (SOFM) The Muslim World School of Frontier Missions (SOFM) is for people who have a passion to share Jesus with Muslims. It’s for people who want to share Jesus in places where there are few known believers. The school involves a lot of hands-on training. Staff and students will be experiencing different cultures, worship styles, and local-style evangelism throughout the school. They will visit local mosques and temples, spend time in local communities, and learn from the people around them. Students get to hear from experienced field workers, staff and church planters, who have had years of ministry experience, countless stories, and eye-opening case studies that the students can learn from Head over to ywamchiangmai.org to find out more about this school and their outreach to the Muslim world. YWAM Responds to the Camp Fire With the destructive wildfires that tore through parts of California YWAM bases came together to help the people who were affected by the fires. Here is a statement from YWAM Redding, which was one of the locations that was involved in the relief work … As you may have heard, California’s deadliest and most destructive wildfire in state history, called the “Camp Fire” recently swept through Paradise, CA, just an hour and a half south of Redding. Sadly, it has taken over 70 lives, left over 1,000 still missing, and destroyed over 10,000 homes. Over the last week, YWAM Redding staff and students have spent hours manning a distribution center for the victims of the Fire with the collaboration of our YWAM Family. About a week ago, some leaders in our YWAM community had a deep desire to help the hurting community, and as they went around the city God gave them a practical solution: collect donations and give to those who have lost everything. The collecting and giving process that started out with 3 bags of clothes, turned very quickly into a whole parking lot full of organized items ready for Paradise residents to collect as needed, as well as multiple free of charge food vendors, portable bathrooms and full generator-run showers. We are now moved into an old Toys ‘R’ Us building and have plans to continue the center for another 6 months! We still need your help! As of now, we have plenty of donations, what we need is for volunteers to give their time to sort, organize and be a part of the amazing donation process! We could use about 20 volunteers around the clock for the next couple of weeks. If you, or your church, or a group of friends are able/willing to give your time, we would love to have you! You can message YWAM Redding for more info, or feel free to just show up! The best place to find out how you can get involved is to check out the YWAM Redding Facebook Page and the YWAM Chico Facebook page. From there you can see a few different ways that you can get involved … Fountain of Life The Fountain of Life ministry works to help solve the problems of a lack of access to safe water, poor basic sanitation, and improper personal hygiene. According to YWAM Kochi, which is in the state of Kerala, it is the worst natural disaster that they have seen. The rains have forced authorities to open 33 dams in the state and the majority of the state is flooded. Roads are washed away and places have been completely isolated. YWAM Kochi is responding to the needs in their state in a few different ways… Already hundreds of people are staying at their location, and there are government doctors visiting and helping the people staying there. They have an urgent need of: Blankets Bed sheets Mats Food YWAM Kochi is also putting together a task force of skilled and able people to assist with the rehabilitation of the Flood Victims. The Global Fight Against Human Trafficking and Slavery Are we doing enough in the global fight against modern slavery and human trafficking? According to the International Labour Organisation (ILO), an agency of the United Nations, UN, there are currently an estimated 40.3-million people in modern slavery and 152 million in child labour around the world. Of the victims of modern slavery 1 in 4, or over 10-million, are children. Many of these victims are exploited in the private sector, such as domestic work, construction, or agriculture. Almost 5-million are victims in the commercial sex industry, of which 99% are women. Often overlooked in the modern slavery numbers is also the over 15-million people, of whom almost 85% are women, who are in forced marriages. Over a third of all victims of forced marriage were children at the time of the marriage. Of those people who are trafficked, 99% are never rescued! Watch this video on YouTube. There are many examples of modern day slavery happening around the world … Human Trafficking in Nepal and India Recently a team from YWAM Madison visited a village in Nepal and saw first hand the results of human trafficking on the village there. Watch this video on YouTube. Slave Labour in the Middle East Gulf States like Saudi Arabia and Kuwait Recent furore over an Intragram post by a Kuwaiti blogger helped to highlight the plight of many so called “domestic servants” in the Middle East, who are treated no better than slaves. This blogger said: “How can you have a servant at home who keeps their own passport with them?” asked Alqattan in a video that has since been removed. “What’s worse is they have one day off every week, To take a day off every week, that’s four days a month,” she said. “Those are the days that she’ll be out. And we don’t know what she’ll be doing on those days, with her passport on her. “How can you have a servant at home who gets to keep their passport with them? If they ran away and went back to their country, who’ll refund me? Unfortunately those conditions are not uncommon in the Middle East, with migrant workers typically having their freedoms severely limited by their “employers”. This includes: Being locked in the house with no way to get out Having their passports taken from them Wages being withheld Not having access to any form of communication Only being allowed to go out of the house while being escorted by a member of their “employers” family Being subject to sexual and physical assault, without protection from local law enforcement Being forced to work 21-hour days Not being allowed to chose their own employer and being sold and passed around like slaves Not being allowed to leave the country with their “employers” permission Many of these abuses are made possible because of the Kafala System, which affects over 23 million workers, that is present in many rich Arab Gulf States in the Middle East, including Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar. It is estimated that in Saudi Arabia, and other Gulf States, there are over a million slaves. Slave Labour Building the World Cup 2022 Facilities Qatar is due to host the upcoming 2022 Football / Soccer Fifa World Cup. There has been intense scruteny over the use of foreign and migrant workers in the building of these facilities, with many claiming that the industrial and construction workers are being housed in inhumane conditions, and that basic safety measure for the workers is being ignored. Even last month as France celebrated their win in the 2018 World Cup there are fresh reports coming out of Qatar of the horrific conditions that the migrant workers are subject to. Sharan Burrow is an advocate for workers rights in Qatar and recently gave an interview about the migrant worker situation in Qatar … Watch this video on YouTube. Despite pledging to make reforms to their migrant worker system in Qatar reports continue to come out about their failure to follow through. Slavery at Sea – South East Asia Slavery and Human Trafficking Just North of where I am here in Australia there is more accounts of slave labour in the fishing fleets of South East Asia. A few years ago Australia banned the import of seafood from that part of the world, and I, like many, complained about it because of the huge increases in the cost of the seafood. The reason for the ban was because of the reports of rampant slave labour in the crews of many of the fishing vessels in the area. If I had actually know then what I know now, I would have been all for the ban … Watch this video on YouTube. That audio was pulled from a larger report and story from the Guardian. I would highly recommend that you have a look at the link in the show notes at ywampodcast.com/108 where you can watch the full 15-minute mini-documentary, and read their full report. While that original story is from 2014, reports from even last year indicate that the practice of murder, slavery, and forced labour in the fishing industry is still prevalent… Child Soldiers Unfortunately child soldiers are still commonly used around the world in some state armies and many non-state militias. Most of these children were kidnapped from their homes, and their families were killed or enslaved. They are forced to be fighters, cooks, suicide bombers, human shields, messengers, spies, or for sexual purposes. There are estimated to be over 300,000 child soldiers in the world today. These children live in a state of shock and in desperate need of medical and psychological attention. As soldiers they suffer in many overwhelming ways: 90% of them would have been beaten 88% witness murder 86% are threatened with death 59% have been commanded to abduct other children 53% are commanded to commit murder 26% have been raped (source: here) Slave and Child Labour in Mining, Agriculture, and Industry Around the world many people, including children, are used for industrial, agriculture, and mining. Many of these people live in slave like conditions … Watch this video on YouTube. Where is there child and slave labour: Garment industry Mining – Gold, Diamonds, Rare Minerals Fruit, Tobacco, Coffee, and Coco Picking Household workers / servants What is YWAM Doing? We are as Christians called to bring justice to these people… … Learn to do good; seek justice, rescue the oppressed, defend the orphan, plead for the widow. Isaiah 1:17 and … What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. James 2:14-17 and … He executes justice for the fatherless and the widow, and loves the sojourner, giving him food and clothing.
