Mental illness is one of those things we're aware of, but don't seem to know that much about. Yet research suggests as many as 1 in 4 people are affected with some sort of mental disorder. It's much more prevalent than you may have imagined. Our guest today, Cristóbal Krusen was blessed with a beautiful boy. A gifted athlete with "dollar signs on his feet" as one of his high school coaches described him, Daniel began to show signs of severe mental illness, and was eventually diagnosed with schizo affective disorder, (which we know as schizophrenia.) In this episode, Cristóbal shares the many emotions he and his family have endured through Daniel's ordeal, and how a full reliance on God and His church have allowed him to endure to the present day. Recently Todd found himself in a bit of a bind. He was on his stationery bike when he realized his foot was stuck inside the pedal. Divorce. It's the last thing any married person wants to hear or consider. Yet, it's sometimes inevitable. "Serve God," they said. "It will be fun!" they said. "Your life will be infinitely better," they said. While we don't really know who "they" are, we do know that serving God is sometimes touted as a blissful experience, that once you do so you'll never experience pain or heartache. The reality could not be further from that. Sometimes we put our faith in God, only to have a tragedy occur such as the loss of a child. The mother of our guest, Richard Ronsisvalle, had that very thing happen, and nearly lost her fledgling faith as a result. But she resolved to strengthen her faith, and in turn led every last one of her 11 children to God. As a very young man, Richard heard the call to preach the gospel. This meant turning down many offers from some of the biggest studios in America who wanted to record his beautiful baritone voice so he could fulfill his calling. Service to God meant forsaking everything dear to attend 24/7 to his wife who had developed dementia and Alzheimer's. While finding a fine nursing home would have been convenient, and on the surface would have allowed Richard to perform his ministry, he chose the inconvenient (and far less lucrative) path of honoring the scriptural admonition for a man to love his wife, even as Christ loved the church. There's not much more to say about our guest Cheryl Ricker than she's simply an inspiring woman. Enduring a broken marriage as a child, to suffering extreme physical challenges as an adult, Cheryl has endured major setbacks, broken heart, divided loyalties to adult figures, and has come to the other side with a song in her heart and a smile on her face. How many friends do you have? If you look at your social media accounts, you might think you have hundreds, even thousands of friends. But are how many of those connections are your true friends? Not many, we would venture to guess. While the minds behind the massive social media machines twist and congeal the meaning of the word "friend" to their liking, they can't rewire the basic human need for intimate connection with our fellow man. "The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much." James 5:16 All Jim Maxim ever knew as a child was dysfunction. His father's alcoholism caused the family home to be repossessed by the bank, and he turned to booze and hard drugs to numb the pain. One day while driving under the influence of the drugs and the pain of his reality, he was in a terrible car wreck that left him hanging on the precipice of death, where he recalls actually seeing demons in his subconscious. Although not an overly religious person, Jim's mother prayed fervently for his recovery. Thankfully her prayers were answered and Jim did recover and now ministers to broken people the world over on the healing and life-giving power of fervent prayer. As Jim lay at death's door, Jim's mother prayed for the soul of her son. God answered her prayer and Jim's life was claimed, redeemed, and transformed for Jesus Christ.
