Episode 10110 Hey Google, Am I Drunk?
This week Michael and Stephanie talking about research into intoxication and the accelerometer in your phone. Can it tell when you are drunk? Should it? You can find the Neuralink conference everywhere. The Twitter thread about hacking Neopets is here. The reddit community about the targeted shirt ads is here. The title image is one of these shirts. I see them all the time, and now thanks to the Baader Meinhof effect, you probably will too. Please rate and review our show! Share us with a friend. Episode 10101 You Charged What Now?
Just an FYI, that for the foreseeable future we're moving to an every other week type schedule. So this week Michael and Stephanie are discussing a 'hidden' feature in Tesla cars called bidirectional charging. Could this untether us from our current routines? Can robots become roaming chargers? Can you just drive your car up to your lake house off the grid and power it with your vehicle? Michael laments in this episode that he hasn't been starting his car regularly, and sure enough, the battery died. Got one of those portable charger packs off Amazon, and have been making a point to drive it at least every other day now. That was fun. So it turns out that the feature Michael mentioned about the cars showing traffic cones on the display (right) gets tricked by trucks with those hanging testicle ornaments. You just can't ever account for every road circumstance I guess. Please rate and review our show! Share us with a friend. Reach out by email or Twitter and suggest a topic. We love hearing them. Episode 22 When You’ve Gotta Go, You’ve Gotta Go
New intro music! What do you think? Stephanie and Michael discuss a new way to build in space, no, it's not minecraft, it's urine! Tom Cruise and Elon Musk are indeed talking about making a movie ON the International Space Station. No idea if it'll happen, but man, that must've been an interesting conversation to listen in on.    Please rate and review our show! Share us with a friend. Episode 10100 Your Own Personal R2D2
Let's talk about R2D2, or cobots if you prefer. Stephanie and Michael discuss an article about robot assistants, specifically to self-driving cars, that may help passengers with needs that typically the driver would do. R2D2, btw, doesn't really have a 'class', he's just a Second Generation Robotic Droid Series-2.  This is a link to the Murderbot series that I haven't had a chance to read yet. We apologize for the sporadic schedule of the podcast lately. Things, as you know, are quite hectic these days and sometimes the creative stuff suffers.  Please also rate and review our show! Episode 21 The Second Plague: Murder Hornets
Today Michael and Stephanie discuss the murder hornet invasion. Also fire ants, and lawns. If you see any bee heads on little stakes, please be wary of the murder hornets. Here's an actual video of how the Japanese honey bees deal with an invading hornet. We apologize for the sporadic schedule of the podcast lately. Things, as you know, are quite hectic these days and sometimes the creative stuff suffers. We do have an episode about R2-D2 prepped for next week though.  Please also rate and review our show! Episode 0b10011 A Van Full Of Delivery Spiders
Our, like your, world has been a little topsy turvy lately. We apologize for our unplanned hiatus, but we're back with a story about delivery robots!  There are a few different theories about Black Mirror viewing order, I'll leave it to you to Google on your own if you're so inclined. I don't know if I'll stick to episode order or not, but if I don't I'll let you know.  Here's the story about the feral scooters in Central Park Michael mentioned.  Sourdough update! It's coming along I guess. This was a bit too dense. It still tasted good though. Please also rate and review our show! Share us with a friend. Reach out by email or Twitter and suggests a topic. Episode 39 Germs Entering Every Orifice In My Face!
In a You Did What Now? first, Stephanie and Michael had a guest on. E. Rosalie Li Rodenborn is a graduate student in the Public Health Biology program at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and is here to talk about COVID-19, our latest coronavirus pandemic. We recorded this about a week ago, so Rosalie quotes some numbers here and there that may have gotten updates in the meantime. You can follow her on Twitter or read her blog at NobelProse, or listen to her podcast for updates. Why not all three?  We talk about origins, prevention, and innovative programs that have looked to predict and prevent outbreaks like this. I did NOT make a Corona beer joke, so please send your applause my way.  Rosalie provided an exhaustive list of references, of which I'll mention a few. If you want some more info or where to look, please reach out. This is an article about the shuttered USAID’s Predict program that was hunting viruses BEFORE they became pandemics to help prepare us.  Here's one about how the warm weather may not kill this, something that the recent temporary canceling of things seems to be banking on.  And here's a Tedx talk about using animals as sentinels against the spread of disease.  Please also rate and review our show! Episode 20 Poisoned Or Superhero, What’ll It Be?
Stephanie and Michael discuss a science experiment from the 1930s that explored whether Black Widow spiders are in fact poisonous. The scientific method is sound! How do you get a spider to bite a rat? Harvey Washington Wiley was the American Chemist that created the poison squad. It's an interesting story, one that I heard about on Gastropod. Episode ob10010 So Long And Thanks For All The Renewable Energy
Michael and Stephanie discuss 'anti-solar' panels and other new forms of energy generation, but first a quick update on our pal Elon Musk. He's saying the new Neuralink updates are awesome, but maybe he should keep an eye out, because there are competitors like this one called Neurosity that doesn't need to do surgery. Seems like Tesla's Solar Roof will be rolling out this year though, the company is hiring roofers.  There's a video at the top of the CNN article that talks about the Japanese energy projects Michael mentioned, and it's not hard to find other interesting projects. Here's another about turning raindrops into power.  Please rate and review the show. Share us with a friend. Reach out by email or Twitter and suggests a topic. We love hearing them. Episode 19 WLGM 101.7 The Spiralnauts
In this episode Michael and Stephanie discuss the weird radio bursts from FRB 180916.J0158+65 that are repeating every 16 days. Is it aliens? Specifically, there are one or two bursts every hour for four days before going silent for 12 days. It then repeats. It's originating from a the spiral galaxy known as  SDSS J015800.28+654253.0, nearly 500 million years away, meaning this signal originated more than 500 million years ago. This is actually the closest FRB ever detected.  Please rate and review the show. Share us with a friend. Reach out by email or Twitter and suggests a topic. We love hearing them. Episode 17 Hey Baby What’s Your Predisposition For A Variety Of Possible Genetic Disorders?
Michael and Stephanie discuss a potential dating app from George Church that would screen out potential matches whose pairing might let to children with serious genetic disorders.  There's plenty to think about here, but as the app doesn't exist yet, we'll have to fall back on old-fashioned dating habits. Or look into Church's other work, where he's trying to make us immune to viruses and reverse aging. So there's that. Episode 0b10000 Our AI Isn’t Weird Enough Yet
Michael and Stephanie discuss a Ted Talk by Janelle Shane that talks about the weird ways AI and algorithms try to solve problems, especially when given vague controls. Janelle actually wrote a book about this, and has a website. Michael just purchased the book, and will update in the future. The programming language for kids Stephanie mentioned is called Scratch, and it looks pretty interesting.  Please reach out on Twitter or by email with your favorite AI generated Ice Cream flavor name, or just say hello or suggest an episode. Episode 16 The Good Tweeters
Stephanie and Michael discuss an experiment that seeks to find altruist birds. That's right, good birds. Or are we just projecting? Should we build giant good bird robots?  The computer algorithm Michael was talking about is literally called Bees algorithm. It's a population-based search algorithm, basically it's a way to efficiently find and focus on an important section of your data set and it mimics how bees search for food.  The Panda porn comment is pretty searchable on your own, but it even has a Wikpedia page.  Please follow the subscription links below and rate/review us on the appropriate podcast platforms. Episode 0b1111 The 5g Of Weather Prediction
Michael and Stephanie discuss the idea that new 5g technology might threaten the weather technology we rely on for storm prediction. 5G is being rolled out faster in China and Korea, spearheaded by Chinese tech giant Huawei, which comfortingly has been rumored to be using it's networks to sell China foreign data. Terrific. You CAN actually follow the podcast on Tiktok. We're simply YDWN there. Episode 0b1110 Whiskey Pod Challenge
Michael and Stephanie catch up on some old episode notes, and then talk about a company called Notpla that's worked with Glenlivet to make cocktails in a biodegradable pod.  The holidays are coming! We probably won't publish an episode the week of Chanukkah and Christmas, but will put one up right after New Years and then back to the weekly schedule. Please don't hesitate to mention the podcast to friends and family, share the show, get other people to subscribe, we really appreciate it.  I feel like we've started to get the hang of this and 2020 should be great. Episode 14 No Sleep ’till Baby Shark
Michael and Stephanie discuss a discovered gene mutation that may allow us to need less sleep, and all the ramifications that may come with it. Maybe we'll finally catch up with our Netflix queues.  We skipped publishing an episode going into Thanksgiving, but we do have every intention of putting out episodes during the winter holidays. We're going to try to get those edited and posted the Monday before Christmas and New Years.
