Stop Snoozing! God Is Trying to Use You!
In his final sermon, Dr. King warned us against “sleeping through a revolution.” Today’s texts remind us that sometimes we can be wide awake and spiritually asleep. And still, Jesus invites us to “follow him” — to walk with him and walk like him. Let’s not be found snoozing, when God is trying to use us. "Stop Snoozing!"  "God Is Trying to Use You!” - Rev. Tearing the Heavens Open
God tore the heavens open at Jesus' baptism to bless him with the Holy Spirit that would equip and empower him to do the hard work of redemption. The Spirit descending like a dove, may cause us to see the moment as peaceful and serene; when, in fact, it was a moment of warfare, a moment when God began to wage war with sin for our sake. Those who are baptized believers of Jesus Christ are enlisted in that same fight to redeem the world. As we celebrate Jesus' baptism and remember our own, don't forget to give thanks for God's power that it is at work in you and through you."Tearing the Heavens Open" - Rev. Shine!
The lights and decor may all be packed away, but Christmas is not quite over. This week, we celebrate Epiphany — in honor of the day the wise men, who were guided by a star, finally found the Christ Child. They worshipped and presented their gifts — just as we are called to do. What will you offer God in 2021? How will you be a light that leads other to the Savior? "Shine!" - Rev. The Set Time
For generations and generations, prophets pointed to the time when Christ would come. Then, when the set time came - Jesus was born of a woman, under the law, to save all of us who would one day struggle to keep the law. What a gift to the world! We may have wanted to rush the promises of God in 2020, but it seems divine blessings require divine timing - and are worth the wait."The Set Time" - Rev. Love Came Down
What a surprise the angel’s announcement must have been for Mary! Sure — she was expecting the Messiah like everyone else; but, there’s no way she was expecting to be the vessel chosen for God’s love to come down to earth. Hopefully, our hearts are as open as Mary’s — to carry the gift of God’s love into all the world. "Love Came Down" - Rev. Joy to the World!
Joy to the world -- the Lord has come (and is coming again)! Psalm 126 reminds us that even amidst the discord and despair in our world -- there can and will be joy. And just because there is joy, doesn't mean we have to ignore our pain. In fact, the tears we cry, the sorrow we have will serve as seeds of transformation and restoration, when we trust God with them. “Joy to the World!”  -  Rev. Peace Be With You: The Hard Part is Over!
Even as the Advent season counts the church down to Christmas, another countdown clock is running. 2020 has been quite a year, and many folks look toward 2021 with great expectation! The Good News is, even amid the difficulties of the year, God promises us through the prophet Isaiah comfort and peace. Regardless of what happened in 2020 or what may happen in 2021, God's word remains the same: comfort, comfort my people.  So, peace be with you! The hard part is over. “Peace Be With You: The Hard Part is Over!”  -  Rev. Get Ready...A Great Thing Is Coming Our Way!!!
Tis’ the season for getting ready ... There is cooking and shopping and decorating to do! And let’s not forget, the Advent season is intended to help us prepare our hearts for Christ the King. No one knows when he’s coming, so, we’re called to keep watch. No one knows the day or the hour, but we do know to expect great things. "Get Ready...A Great Thing Is Coming Our Way!!!" -  Mr. Vernon MooreMark 13: 24-37Bulletin flipbook: View https://pubhtml5.com/homepage/ymvqSubscribe to Worship 1st Podcast on iTunes, Spotify, or your favorite player. Thank You!!!
Having a heart of thanksgiving shouldn’t be saved for this week when we celebrate the holiday. We should thank God anytime and all the time! The Psalmist commands us shout unto the Lord — to get on our feet and celebrate God. Cultivating an attitude of gratitude can empower us to live lives that emphasize both thanks and giving.  "Thank You!!!" -  Ms. Wendi PetersonPsalm 100: 1-5Bulletin flipbook: View https://pubhtml5.com/homepage/ymvqSubscribe to Worship 1st Podcast on iTunes, Spotify, or your favorite player. Giving Thanks for What Is and What Ain't
The Psalmist celebrates the great gift of having a God who is always on our side. If we passed the mic, we could all probably share an “If It Had Not Been” moment from this week or year. The season of Thanksgiving is a perfect time to look back over our lives and give thanks for a God who is always with us — blessing and blocking, providing and protecting. "Giving Thanks for What Is and What Ain't" -  Pastor Eleanor ColvinPsalm 124:1-8Bulletin flipbook: View https://pubhtml5.com/homepage/ymvqSubscribe to Worship 1st Podcast on iTunes, Spotify, or your favorite player. Giving Thanks for the Call to Build a Better World
Even though it’s still hot in our part of Texas, it’s actually fall y’all — seasons are changing! Traditionally speaking, it’s harvest time, which might be hard for some of us to understand in our microwave, drive-thru, Door Dash world. And still, God trusts us to do the work of harvesting — to do what is needed to build a better world. "Giving Thanks for the Call to Build a Better World" -  Pastor Eleanor ColvinPsalm 127:1-2 and Matthew 9:35-38Bulletin flipbook: View https://pubhtml5.com/homepage/ymvqSubscribe to Worship 1st Podcast on iTunes, Spotify, or your favorite player. Inherent Praise -- Inherited Praise
Today is recognized as All Saint's Day in the life of the church worldwide. We remember family members who have transitioned from life to eternal life this year, and we remember others who taught us the ways of Christ. As we celebrate the saints, we also celebrate our calling to be saints -- not a call to be perfect; but, a call to allow the power of Christ at work in us to position us to live lives of faith that make a difference in the world. In today's text, Daniel praises the God of his ancestors before doing great things. Let's follow his example.Daniel 2:20-23, 27-28 - Pastor Eleanor ColvinBulletin flipbook: View https://pubhtml5.com/homepage/ymvqSubscribe to Worship 1st Podcast on iTunes, Spotify, or your favorite player. Let it Flow!
Dr.  Martin Luther King Jr. made the words popular: let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream. But, it was the prophet Amos who first issued this call to people who thought worship was their only responsibility to God. Through Amos, the Lord makes it clear to them and to us that worship is step one. Living a life of worship - that helps bring liberty and justice to others - is the believer's ultimate goal, which brings God the ultimate glory.Let it Flow! - Pastor Eleanor ColvinAmos 5:14-15; 21-24Bulletin flipbook: View https://pubhtml5.com/homepage/ymvqSubscribe to Worship 1st Podcast on iTunes, Spotify, or your favorite player. Still Growing
Have you ever noticed how something can be terribly ugly and also a bit beautiful? An outfit, an animal,  a pandemic — even the cross of Christ. Today, as we celebrate the birth of this beautiful ministry, we acknowledge all the ugliness God has called us to meet with love. We’re thankful that the Spirit of the Lord is upon us to do good works. Walk This Way
Charges have been filed against us. God argues -- through the prophet Micah -- that humanity has not acted justly, loved mercy or walked humbly with God. We've been negligent in showing our love for God through our love for our neighbors. Thank God for second chances and for divine plea deals.Walk This Way - Pastor Eleanor ColvinJeremiah 29:4-7 and Micah 6: 6-8Bulletin flipbook: View https://pubhtml5.com/homepage/ymvqSubscribe to Worship 1st Podcast on iTunes, Spotify, or your favorite player. The Law of Liberty
One nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all ... With all that’s going on in the world, it seems we are still a far way off from fulfilling our nation’s pledge and our God’s will. If only we would live grounded in God’s love and guided by God’s law — we might truly experience liberty and justice for all. Holy Hydration
After journeying with the Israelites through Exodus, one thing should be clear: we can count on God. But, even after experiencing multiple miracles, the children of God are wondering once again — is God with us? After being miraculously fed, they’re now thirsty (as if that’s too hard for God). Just like them, some of us could use some holy hydration today. New Every Morning
What is the longest road trip you've ever taken, or, the trip that had the most unexpected twists and turns? The exodus was full of unknowns that exhausted the children of Israel; so, it's no surprise, they started complaining about everything -- from their leaders to their lunches. What was a surprise though, was God's compassionate response to their hunger -- by raining down Manna and miracles from heaven.  Child of God, what do you hunger for today? Miracles Come in Waves
221 miles wide. 1,600 feet deep. These dimensions of the Red Sea may have intimidated the Israelites, but were no match for God. Likewise, the waves of trials confronting us are no match for the God who commands wind and waves. We may even look at our sea of trials differently if we understood that miracles also come in waves.“Miracles Come in Waves” - Pastor Eleanor ColvinExodus 14:19-31Bulletin flipbook: View https://pubhtml5.com/homepage/ymvqSubscribe to Worship 1st Podcast on iTunes, Spotify, or your favorite player. Miraculously Covered
