WWR39: The Doctor of Wrestling, Dr. David Curby, on the scientific study of wrestling
Episode 39 of the World Wrestling Resource Podcast visits with the Doctor of Wrestling, Dr. Dave Curby. Since 2007, Curby has been the leader of a group called the International Network of Wrestling Researchers. The intent after its foundation was to connect people who have like-minded research ideas and projects surrounding wrestling. Dr. Curby, who was a Big Ten champion for Michigan in 1974 and one of the first Junior National freestyle champions for the budding USWF, has been developing research on the sport for decades. We'll explain what the INWR is, its relationship with United World Wrestling and how fans can figure out what exactly this research can lead to. Dr. Curby and the INWR also produces the International Journal of Wrestling Science. His late son Jacob was a Greco-Roman wrestler and his memory is honored each year with the Jacob Curby award. WWR36: 1972 Olympic Champions Dan Gable and Ben Peterson talk hydration and recount weight changes
Nearly 20 years ago, the sport of college wrestling was rocked by deaths of three college athletes as they tried to cut weight. Billy Saylor, Joe LaRosa and Jeff Reese all died after massive dehydration complicated by the use of legal, yet mostly untested supplements. The result was sweeping change from the NCAA, including moving dual meet weigh-ins to one hour before and banning of anything related to weight loss that wasn't simply a product of hard work. Rubber suits, something advertised in wrestling magazines since the 1960's became illegal everywhere, not just at the site of competition. The use of saunas, while still beneficial according to some, was also banned. On Episode 36 of the World Wrestling Resource podcast, we'll talk with a pair of 1972 Olympic Champions, Ben Peterson and Dan Gable, about the situation with hydration and wrestlers from 1997, what changes occurred, what still needs to happen and where the finger should have been pointed. All that and more on WWR. WWR34: Dennis Hall and Terry Brands address rule changes, Cadet & Juniors and UWW sanctions
World champions Dennis Hall and Terry Brands return to the World Wrestling Resource Podcast with Episode 34 as the two tackle the Cadet and Junior World Championships, rule changes and international discipline. We first tackle the new rule change handed down by United World Wrestling that eliminates forced par terre in Greco-Roman. Dennis Hall doesn't like it. We then get into a spirited discussion about what needs to happen to "make Greco cool" so our Cadets get a chance to wrestle the style more and be better equipped internationally as they move up in the age ranks. We then talk about the development of the Cadet and Junior World championships and whether or not athletes like Spencer Lee and Mark Hall are the rule or the exception. Then we finish up with the disciplinary action handed down by UWW on Mongolia and what we expect to see given to Russia after one of their coaches assaulted an official on the mat during the Cadet Worlds.
