46: Lies You Are Telling Yourself That Will Hold Your Business Back in 2021
Let’s take a look at the delusion, cynicism, and avoidance that some of you are hanging on to from 2020. In this episode, business coach Robin Walker discusses what may be holding you back for success in 2021. It’s ok. We are all doing this in some area of our lives. But friends, let’s not carry this into the new year. Actually, let’s end this today. Delusion #1: Once 2020 is over everything will be back to the way it was I am going to start with my favorite delusion that some people are basing their business on. Folks…nothing is happening the morning of January 1 except maybe some hangovers. January 1 is a day just like any other day. Someone long ago decided it had goal setting significance, but you can decide to take a fresh start any day of the year. You will have the same roadblock today that you do on January first. It is time to deal with it.-Robin Walker #2: It isn’t worth planning after what happened in 2020: I’ll figure it out as I go Yes that stunk. Yes, your plans had to change drastically- but for most of you, your end goal didn’t need to change… just the path to get there. (Listen to episode 45 about how far in advance to plan and how your path can adapt without the end goal changing.) Having no plan is not the solution. Winging day to day, or month to month won’t get you back on track or get you to the big dream you have tucked away. For me it is a new Mustang convertible. I had one in my late twenties that I had to eventually get rid of when the baby seat didn’t quite fit in the tiny backseat. Achieving this isn’t going to change the world, but it is a goal that keeps me on track and motivated. I will not let 2020 change the destination. It is still my goal. My path to get there has changed, but you bet that picture is still on my kitchen cabinet reminding me everyday. It will take a plan to get me there. #3: I’ll wait until things are back the way they were to make a plan You are going to be waiting a long time if you are waiting for the market to be the same as it was pre-Covid. Meanwhile, your competitors are finding a way to make it work and booking your clients. Things might not ever look exactly the same in your business. Some people have a lot more business based on their industry- like counselors/therapists and sellers of hand sanitizer. Some business owners have been creative and found new ways to serve, and others won’t be able to ever do business the way they did before- at least not for a while. Regardless it won’t be exactly the same.  But if you are sitting around saying that what I was doing isn’t working, so I will sit here and be mad about it and not doing anything, you are heading toward failure. No one is coming in to save you. Your anger and frustration is warranted and understandable. But at some point you have to get past it and move forward. Easier said than done I know. There is no shame in getting help. If you need to brainstorm how you can pivot or find what will work for your business- you know where to find me. Do you have a plan for 2021? 45: How Far Out Should You Plan in Your Business When Things are Unpredictable?
A lot of you got burnt this year with plans that needed to pivot or just didn’t work out. You are hesitant to plan for next year- understandable. But before you swear off that 2021 planner take a listen to this episode. In this episode, business coach Robin Walker talks about why you should still plan, how far out you should go, and how you can create a more adaptable plan in 2021.    How far out should you plan? Everyone had something not go as planned in 2020. It happens with any plan, but this year took adaptability to a whole new level. My plans had to change too. I had in-person local events on my calendar and that was driving my marketing plan for the year. Last year we did an in person Plan your year group intensive. We are going online with it next month (7 spots left if you want to grab an early bird ticket). I looked back at my data and in 2019, we did the event 100% virtual because no one was interested in doing it in person. So there’s that. Based on that, it doesn’t even make sense for me to be mad that I can’t do it in person. One of the hesitations I originally ran into for the workshop, is that women thought it meant planning every little detail of the entire year. No, that’s not it. I wouldn’t even recommend that. You don’t start with that. You start with the finish line. Where do you want to end up at the end of the year? This could be a revenue goal or a milestone that you want to achieve.  Picture yearly goal setting like GPS when you are headed somewhere new. You log in your end destination. That is your finish line- let’s say it is 100k in revenue. You push start and get 3 route options- just like in your business. There are multiple ways your business can get to that goal of six figures. The slow and steady route with the longest trip time, that may feel the safest. The fastest route on all the highways, or the middle route that is a mix of both. You choose a path- this is the business plan people- if you skip the plan, its like just starting to drive and hoping you figure out how to get to that destination.  So you have your plan…as you start out, you may get rerouted due to a closed road. You may see a hazard ahead and get to choose a way around it. This are the road blocks in your business- your facebook ad that leads to your funnel isn’t approved or isn’t converting as planned, your speaking event is cancelled, your offer isn’t selling.  When this happens, you don’t abandon the destination, you find a new route. If you could see your business path during 2020, there were a lot of those red lines and hazard ahead warnings. Regardless, business owners still made it to their destination- even in 2020. Those of you considering NOT planning for the year, or setting a goal? This is like driving without a destination. You are just ‘going for a drive’ everyday in your business. That is not a higher level business strategy. That won’t get you where you want to go. Once you have your goal, work backwards. How do you plan on getting to that goal? What has to happen each quarter? This is another place you may get stuck, especially if it is a goal you have been trying to achieve without success. What are you missing? How DO you achieve it by the end of the year? Get help from a coach or a mastermind group if this is the case. If you have a good handle on what needs to get done, map out business activity and content for the year on loose basis- kind of like an outline. Maybe this looks like themed months or quarterly goals. A mapped out yearly overview is easier to pivot or adapt if unpredictable situations arise. If you host a membership group, a podcast, or something that needs to retain followers or members, this is really important. You need to plan further out to book guests and experts, but also to have a promise of what is to come to help members see the value of sticking around. If you are looking to grow, planning out further- with flexibility- can be key. You don’t have to have detailed content for the whole year, or blog posts written- I actually don’t advise that. You need some room for adaptability as you try your plan out. Once you have things mapped out, start detailed planning monthly, or even quarterly. Big vision/destination > Mapped out path to get there > Short term goals and action steps The biggest thing that stops women from doing this is that it is overwhelming to do on your own, and it takes some dedicated time to do it. Without accountability, it is easy to set a destination and then leave it at that. You may even pick a word of the year- but that’s really just snacks for the ride. Not the plan. So when are you going to make your yearly plan?  How about on January 11? Get through the holidays, enter all your 2020 data and take time to reflect on that. Then join the group for a 1 day intensive to get a vision and path documented. I will be there to coach, and the group will be there for feedback and ideas on other routes or ways to avoid the hazards. Trust me- its way better than a lonely CEO day on your own that may or may not actually happen. I would be honored to be your co-pilot and help you on your journey to your best year in business. 44: What 2020 taught us about business and how to use that in 2021
In this episode, business coach Robin Walker shares what business owners have learned through the pandemic of 2020, and how you can use those lessons to better prepare for 2021. I have yet to find anyone that had their business and home life sail through 2020 without any changes. We have all had to stop and re-evaluate, adjust, or pivot. No one was immune, whether it means it was your best sales year ever, or the worst. We are aware of the big things- the revenue changes, changes in in-person scenarios, customer spending habit changes…but have you looked deeper into why those changes affected you so much? Or why one part of your  business really shined during the hard times? What 2020 taught me about business I coach female business owners. I do this through one on one, and in the Impact Business Circle group. I also host multiple in-person business events throughout the year, as well as speak at events.  In early March of 2020, my 2 day conference, the Lakeside Conference, made it live just under the wire. We got to meet in person the beginning of March, and it felt like the next week, the world turned upside down. The idea that a year of work planning and thousands of dollars in venue costs could have been lost had it been a week later was a very scary feeling. I realized how much of my business year was spent on this one 2 day event. Because so much of my heart went into this event, I had less to give elsewhere- to my family, and to the rest of my business for a good chunk of time. 2020 gave me the opportunity to take a fresh look at the event and how it can better serve the women that attend and feel more aligned with my business. Mourning in-person events I did have to pass on creating any other in-person events. My mom always says- this too shall pass. I know those events will happen again- just not today. In the meantime, I have embraced online events. Online and an in person events are not the same, so stop trying to compare them. It is true- they aren’t. Each has its own pros and cons. I started attending online networking groups that were over an hour from my home. It would have cost me half a day at least to attend these in the past. Now I can log on, leave the heels in the closet, and then afterwards get back to work. I have found speaking events online that don’t require travel, and I have still attracted new clients and followers through those events. Have you embraced online events? Whether you are zoomed out or not, they are here to stay and you might as well take advantage of them in 2021. What worked in the past is no longer working It wasn’t just me that had my world turn upside down- it was my clients too. I had to keep showing up and finding out what they needed. I kept asking, kept trying new things, kept going live, kept listening. As their needs changed, so did how I showed up. I couldn’t just rely on what worked in the past. I had to stay one step ahead of my clients so I could offer what they needed. In 2021, be sure to build in activities that keep you in touch with what your clients need. What I saw behind the scenes Of the businesses that I have been close to throughout the pandemic, those that used group planning as part of their business weathered the storm the best. I witnessed women who weren’t sure what to do next, show up for mastermind meetings and find support and encouragement to keep moving forward and serving any way they could. They laughed together, shared their tears, and just as importantly, kick their butts back to getting on track. These women had yearly goals and a year end vision. They knew the path would have to change a bit, but they knew where they were headed. The finish line didn’t change, the race just had more hurdles. Do you have an end vision for 2021? Where do you want to end up? 43: Your Holiday Offer- What Buyers are Looking For in 2020
In this episode, business coach Robin Walker discusses what buyers are looking for this holiday season and how you, a small business owner, can create an offer to meet those needs, and build your following or revenue at the same time. You don’t need to sell Santa coffee mugs to have a holiday offer. It can be a free content series, an online challenge, a paid group program that starts in the new year, custom products, or anything your unique audience needs right now. Mentioned in this episode: Create an easy and professional landing or sales page with Leadpages: https://bit.ly/wbwleadpages Holiday Offer Free Download: 30+ ideas for your next holiday free or paid offer. https://bit.ly/holidayofferdownload Constant Contact Holiday Pulse Report Here are some highlights of episode 43. Listen in for the meat and bones of the suggestions and how to address them in your offer. Know your audience: what are they looking for? Are they looking for deals for themselves, as well as shopping for others? Do they value quality and uniqueness over price? Make sure you are familiar with their holiday buying habits before you dive into creating something you think they want. Get your offer in front of your customers asap: Buyers need to see your offer multiple times before they will take action. The online space is crowded and distraction. Give an incentive to taking early action, and get that offer in their feed.Make the sale easy: People are busy. Limit the amount of clicks and work that someone has to do to purchase your offer. Be clear about what your product looks like when it arrives, how long it will take to ship, when do they need to buy to get it in time for Christmas?Compete for value, not price: Add a bonus with a deadline, create a custom product you can’t find on Amazon, bundle offers together, create trial size or small joys packages. Be different. Stand out. Give them a gift they can brag about.– Robin Walker According to the Constant Contact 2020 Consumer Pulse Report, buyers are looking for three things this holiday: They want to shop with small businesses. They want competitive prices and small, fun gifts. They want fast and easy shipping. 42: Creating the Perfect Offer for Your Ideal Client [Coaching Session]
In this episode, business coach Robin Walker coaches through the process of combining multiple skill sets and 2 related businesses to form one strategic ideal client, and coordinating perfect offer. This moves on to capturing content buckets from the ideas shared while working through the process. This is episode 3 in a series on ideal client. After the changes that spring 2020 brought to many small businesses, entrepreneurs are wondering how to stand out in their market and attract clients easier and more often. Determining your ideal client can be a balance of what YOU want (when and where you want to work) with the needs of a group of people that you love working with. Impact Business Circle member Jen Feltz generously shares the backend of her business in this coaching session. So many great lessons within this episode to apply to your own business. If you are targeting an ideal client that is overwhelmed, offering a program with too many components and topics will sound like more overwhelm to them. Keep it simple. 41: Niching Down Your Ideal Client [Coaching Session]
In this episode, business coach Robin Walker coaches through the process of determining a new ideal client, how to get over the mindset block of imposter syndrome, and brainstorming where to connect with these new clients. This is episode 2 in a series on ideal client. 40: Stand Out by Niching Down Your Ideal Client
In this episode, business coach Robin Walker discusses why you stand out when you niche down and what to consider when you are updating your ideal client. Too broad? Too narrow? Why not try to sell to more people? Listen in for perspective, examples, and a way to make it all easier. As a business owner or entrepreneur, we often try to please and serve everyone, thinking that it will help make more sales. The irony though, is that not niching down is actually making it harder to book clients. There is a specific type of customer that you work best with. Your skills, experience, and even your personality, make working with this person a perfect fit. The more niched you get, the more customized you can make your customer experience and your content- a more efficient way to attract this specific person. No one else can offer the same experience as you can offer your clients.– Robin Walker Niching down your target market makes: Creating content easierAttracting clients easierReferrals easierVisibility opportunities easier to find and get booked What is not easier? 38: Prepare to be Productive When Things Get Crazy
When things are busy, crazy, or unpredictable in life or business, do you resort to winging it? Or when things feel overwhelming or you have too much on your plate, do you end up not doing anything out of decision fatigue? In this episode, Robin Walker, business coach, speaker, and IMPACT Mastermind host gives 3 different planning strategies to use in order to set yourself up for success when you do get time or energy to work. Spending a little time proactively, makes the times you show up more productive. I was feeling like I was always working but never working (at the same time). I set out to do a time audit and see where my time was being spent. Most of us have done this multiple times throughout out business journey. When life circumstances change (aka a global pandemic) it is always good to try one again. When is the last time you took an honest look at where your focus is throughout the day? This audit led me to adjusting how I plan my week. I started scheduling the down time and what specifically I would be working on. It is time to put the mundane, routine, and reoccurring tasks onto your weekly schedule. Don’t assume you will find time to do them. Make them a priority. When you don’t have your usual time or energy to work, you need to be intentional about the time you do sit down and work. You can hear more about pre-planning your week for success in this episode. Let me know what strategy fits you best! This month we are focusing on motivation in our facebook group, podcast episodes, and the monthly content for the IMPACT Business Circle. Need some?
