S1E15 - Mary T Meagher, 1987 CWSA Award Winner
Mary T. Meagher played a variety of sports when she was growing up but took most naturally to swimming and especially the butterfly stroke. The 10th of 11 children, she describes the sport of swimming as being very objective in training times and success. The boycott of the 1980 Olympics was devastating for many other Olympians but Mary was only 14 at the time and not yet dreaming of being an Olympian. She was however competitive from a young age and explains the differences between collegiate and Olympic swimming, as well as her losses and failures. Mary speaks to her new found freedoms while at CAL, about winning the Honda-Broderick Cup, the transition after her third Olympics and the appreciation she had for having balance in her life. “Madame Butterfly”, as she was popularly referred to, shares the qualities that made her a champion and goes on to describe five fellow Olympic swimmers and past Honda Cup winners in the CWSA sisterhood. She also talks about the advantage of younger swimmers and disadvantage for older swimmers as they pivot in Olympic training and competition between the summer of 2020 and preparing for Tokyo 2021.Host: Chris VoelzA co-production with the Collegiate Women's Sports AwardsFor more information, links and resources plus conversations from the world of women’s sport including articles, blogs, videos and podcasts visit wispsports.com. Coaching Changes Tactics
There’s a different style to this week’s show as Chris is joined by her friend Marci Kornegay, Director of Membership at WeCOACH, for a conversation about golf, coaching and how the pandemic has impacted women in the coaching profession. Marci’s first career was as a college golf coach until she got out of the sun and took a desk job. In her current position she has watched how women coaches have had to adjust to the pandemic restraints on their profession and how their coaching styles have adapted. We also hear how she learnt to adapt when she hiked the Appalachian Trail alone—a true test of character and resilience to an ever changing environment. Something we all have learned to a greater or lesser extent during the pandemic. Tri This: S1E8 - Making the Best Transition
On this episode of Tri This, Dr Kirstin Lauritzen covers the details for an efficient transition. When she first started with Triathlon she didn't even know what a transition was and how to do it. She also realized that out of the many triathlon podcasts she listened to, nobody talked about it. For obvious reasons, people are more interested in how to make their swim, bike and run faster, but an efficient transition is important. Not to mention how overwhelming the racks filled with bikes can be if it's your first one. In this episode we cover it all. How to transition from the swim to bike and from the bike to the run. There's also some differences between local races and bigger races, like Ironman and other World Triathlon races. Transitioning well is actually quite critical and can be overwhelming at your first race. Make sure to check out this episode for some tips for being prepared. S1E13: Rebecca Lobo, 1995 CWSA Award Winner
As the youngest of three children, Rebecca Lobo, was the tagalong sister that took her into the world of sports and she spent time alone in her rural town shooting hoops on her stone pebble driveway. Hours of practice eventually led to a full scholarship at University of Connecticut - a decision she made that was not supported by her parents. We hear about her decision and the collegiate culmination of winning a national championship as she describes the weekend in Minneapolis that changed her life. She recounts her pride in winning the Honda Cup, and especially because it was more than basketball and especially notable since it was in the early days when women were not getting the recognition they deserved in sport. Rebecca shares the best advice given to her by her college coach, Geno Auriemma, “you have to be who you are - don’t try to be more and don’t let yourself be less”. Advice that has served her well throughout her Olympic career where there was a lot of pressure after the USA had won a bronze medal and the fledging WNBA Pro League. Rebecca talks about overcoming shyness in front of a microphone and in life. One of those voices resonates with her Hispanic heritage at a time when there were few basketball players. She subsequently developed a fan following and eventually alongside her mother they created a scholarship to encourage diversity in medical care. Rebecca explains how she became more adept at the microphone and progressed in broadcasting from sideline reporting to calling games, anchoring and analyzing in the studio as well as sharing her experience with aspiring broadcasters.Host: Chris Voelz, CWSA Executive DirectorPodcast length: 43 mins.A co-production with The Collegiate Women’s Sports AwardsFor more information, links and resources plus conversations from the world of women’s sport including articles, blogs, videos and podcasts visit wispsports.com. In this episode of Tri This, Kirstin reflects on the recent ice apocalypse storm that hit Oregon over the past weekend, which left hundreds of thousands of homes without power. It's all about perseverance this training year! Kirstin also has some good news: pools are opening back up after months of closures. And she unpacks the topic of building tissue resilience to help reduce your chances of injury. If you've ever been in a position of trying to get back into running or training and doing a little too much than you should have, or if you are new to the sport and want to make sure you reduce your risk of injury, building up tissue resiliency is how you do it.
