003 - Zinzilla, Bar-hopping in your 30s, and free-range children
Today’s wine is Zinzilla, “a monstrous California zinfandel” (zinfandel is a type of black-skinned grape wine). The label states that it has intense flavor, which Kristin and Alex agree with. The dryness of this wine catches Alex by surprise, which is a large factor in both ladies saying that they probably wouldn’t buy this wine again. Kristin comments that it would pair well with steak. After tasting the wine, Kristin brings up today’s topic: going to bars when you are in your 30s. The girls say that it’s usually embarrassing to go to them and that they feel too old there. On the other hand, Alex talks about how she has some friends the same age that still regularly go to them. Kristin mentions that she has to be really drunk to deal with being in such a place and the endless small talk that ensues. The talk of bars causes Alex to talk about going to breweries and how she sees that some people bring their children to them, which sparks Kristin into ranting about “free-range children.” The two were at a pumpkin patch recently to help a friend and they noticed a lot of children which were not being properly supervised by their parents. Kristin found herself in a situation where she had to act as the person in charge to one of the kids. Kristin and Alex then discuss their acceptance that many people disagree with their views on the behavior of children, and a strange man they saw at the pumpkin patch. Quotes “You used to be able to go out until a stupid hour of the night, be hammered, and then wake up after 4 hours of sleep and somehow function at your job.” “If it’s your house, or your cousin’s house, or a playground, kids should be able to explore and stuff, but they should also be taught to respect other people’s property.”
