About the book: Behind the smiling faces of cashiers, wait staff, and workers of all sorts, a war is going on, usually without the knowledge of official political and labor organizations. Guerrillas of Desire begins with a provocation: The Left is wrong. It’s historical and current strategies are too-often based on the assumption that working and poor people are unorganized, acquiescent to systems of domination, or simply uninterested in building a new world. The fact is, as C.L.R. James has noted, they “are rebelling every day in ways of their own invention”: pilfering, sabotaging, faking illnesses, squatting, fleeing, and counter-strategizing. Kevin Van Meter maps these undercurrents, documenting the history of everyday resistance under slavery, in peasant life, and throughout modern capitalism, while showing that it remains an important factor in revolution and something radicals of all stripes must understand. Episode 225: We talk with Jonathan Levy the Zero Waste Guy. Leading up to college, Jonathan always knew that he wanted to major in Business, but did not know in which area to focus. It was not until he took Managerial Statistics that he found his calling. From measuring movements to reduce bottlenecks to analyzing large swaths of data using linear regression, majoring in Supply Chain Management just made sense. After college, Jonathan found himself in the Industrial Engineering department at UPS as well as Engineering and Facilities at Target, managing teams while optimizing their supply chains. There was, however, one recurring theme that he just could not wrap his head around: most of today’s supply chains are linear. With constraints aimed at minimizing cost and/or maximizing revenue, little time is spent focusing on creating a zero waste, circular supply chain. In 2013, Jonathan was introduced to the California Resource Recovery Association where he earned a certificate in sustainable resource management. Since then he has worked with a variety of haulers and organizations on recycling and organics diversion projects, including Republic Services, NASA Services, Los Angeles Unified School District, Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department and Los Angeles County Department of Public Works. When he is not greening businesses he is constantly looking for new ways to zero waste his life. Episode 222: We talk with Julie Herrada from Marius Mason's support crew. Marius Mason is an anarchist, environmental and animal rights activist currently serving nearly 22 years in federal prison for acts of property damage carried out in defense of the planet. After being threatened with a life sentence in 2009 for these acts of sabotage, he pled guilty to arson charges at a Michigan State University lab researching genetically modified organisms for Monsanto, and admitted to 12 other acts of property damage. No one was physically harmed in these actions. At sentencing the judge applied a so-called “terrorism enhancement,” adding almost two years to an already extreme sentence requested by the prosecution. This is the harshest punishment of anyone convicted of environmental sabotage to date.
