3.08: Rooted in sad Lesbian music FEAT. Girlfriend on the Moon
What the hell is up stars??? Today we're rooting into sad lesbian music. I sat down with LA's Girlfriend on the Moon in my newly minted podcast studio to chat about queer identity, labels, love, heart break, and ridiculous stories that can't be real but are because they're gay. We laughed and got deep as we rooted into some of the sadder stories which have formed us. This is the queer gal chat I might have longed to hear when I was a teenager. Listen in stars, this ones juicy! What the hell is up stars??? It's Valentine's Day week! Here's to a week of love, light, and a solemnly stated commitment to never even entertain the thought of eating at Chick-fil-a EVER again. All opinions stated in this podcast are at the whim of the night (okay look after additional thoughts my opinions on the Gaylor stuff have already changed). Cancel me or love if you want. 3.06: Rooted in the Past and Present FEAT. Empty Head by Frankie Cosmos
Hello stars. What the hell is up? I'm settling into Los Angeles and after the rainstorms from last week, which caused quite a disruption here, the sun has returned, and with it my spirit to release an episode! In today's episode, I discuss what I've been up to getting rooted in the present, while admittedly being rooted in the past. I'd argue that reflecting about the past allows us to be present and to create a bright future. What the hell is up with you? I'm very excited to also share some media and music gems which have been bringing me life including the song Empty Head by Frankie Cosmos, released through Seattle's Subpop Records.  Check out my new website! www.whatthehellisuppod.com Featured song:  Empty Head by Frankie Cosmos https://www.frankiecosmosband.com/ Mentions:  Umi (singer/songwriter) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ifaDO-0n2Fs Wednesday (Netflix)  Glass Onion (Netflix)  My friends and fam back home who've stayed connected with me. <3 CREDS:  Pod Logo: Callan Moore Intro/outro music: Afterspace Rooted music: Matthew Boerner Website: Katie Baumheckel  Editing/mixing: moi Stay rooted, stars <3  Clairey

3.05: Rooted in Desire FEAT. Santa Baby covered by Sug Daniels
What the hell is up? It's the holidays!!! And today I'm examining staying rooted in desire.  You'll hear an incredible cover of Santa Baby by Sug Daniels, who is a Philadelphia-based singer, songwriter, and producer. Sug released an EP called Franklin Street with Weird Sister Records in 2021, and I know you're going to be enchanted by her sweet, folksy yet enticing voice with a ukulele-driven sound in this Sug-afied version of Santa Baby. I also speak briefly about the iconic original singer of this classic Christmas song.  I hope that you might feel inspired to look deeply into your desires, stars. Merry Christmas if you celebrate and happy Solstice to all.  Love you! 3.04: Rooted in her why FEAT. Livt
What the hell is up stars? I'm back with another episode! Just days before I left for Los Angeles with my sister for this grand move of mine, I snuck in one last interview with a star I'd wanted to chat with for a while. I had the sparkling opportunity to sit down with Lakewood-raised Livt, who is now a Seattle-based musician and filmmaker. In this episode, Liv and I reflect on the motivations behind her entire discography, her sources of inspiration, and the why that keeps her rooted in herself and her art-making. As a queer gal on my own journey of self-acceptance, Liv's words of wisdom landed at an opportune moment. This episode did not come without a few bumps in the road, both geographically and metaphorically. 3.03: Rooted in Seattle's iconic Tacocat FEAT. Sounding Out with Izzy
Hello, stars! Welcome back to another episode of the pod. In today's episode, I reveal my Seattle roots while asking what the hell is up with Tacocat? I school fellow music podcaster Isabel Corp on this pop-punk feminist iconic group. Izzy hosts the podcast Sounding Out with Izzy: A Grrrl's Two Sound Cents Podcast and runs a blog where she highlights non-binary, women, and queer femme people in the music industry. Izzy invited me into a collaboration to each introduce the other to a band from our home towns. I chose the sparkly, feminist palindromic Tacocat, who carried me through shitty coming of age moments, and inspired me to dream of more. Stay tuned for my feature on Izzy's show to learn about Boston's The Modern Lovers.  Listen to Tacocat: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lvbtJLKe7Fo https://tacocat.bandcamp.com/ Follow Izzy and listen to her podcast: https://agrrrlstwosoundcents.com/ https://www.instagram.com/agrrrlstwosoundcents/ CREDS// Pod Logo: Callan Moore Intro music: Afterspace  Editing/mixing: me <3

Hello stars. In today's episode, you'll hear the story behind the brilliance of Seattle-based Forest Folktronica artist Mt. Fog and the independent label behind her, Ghost Mountain Records. Rooted in values of transparency and fostering friendly artist support, Ghost Mountain Records creates limited physical runs of media to support independent artists. Mt. Fog's latest release Spells of Silence will be the first vinyl release through the label. Listen in to the ethereal, eerie sounds of Mt. 2.29: What the hell is up? a Starry Chat from the LIVE show ~ SEASON 2 FINALE
Hello dears! I've been on a hiatus! A much-needed spontaneous recuperation session. I've been hiding out with friends and family before my big move down to Los Angeles. I've been rooting myself in my yoga practices, yard dances, reading, writing, and the frequent tearful friend call as I've been processing a dizzying amount of change. But enough on that.  Today's episode is the SEASON TWO FINALE sponsored by the What the Hell is Up Live Show from July 2nd at Cafe Racer. That night, I discussed the story of a star whilst surrounded by stars. Turns out we are all always surrounded by stars in one way or another. Sometimes it might just be a bit harder to see them due to light pollution, smoke, or unrelenting distraction. May we always see ourselves as stars and recognize the starry-qualities in those around us.  Thanks for tuning in. You're a star and I love you.  Magically,  Claire

2.28: What the hell is up with Cascade Mountain flow? FEAT. Lobes and Haywire
Hellllo.... happy summer stars!! What the hell is up? Back in June, I sat down with Seattle-based duo Lobes and Haywire to hear the story of their friendship, collaboration and the stories behind their recent projects. Rapper Alex Olobia, who goes by the name of Lobes, and Hayden Wires, an electronic artist, came together through an event called Party for People, which I helped put on in 2018. From this meeting point of friendship and passion, Lobes mustered the courage and confidence to grow from a Soundcloud Rapper into a performing rapper and the two collaborated to create a full-length album called Samurai Black. Almost 4 years later and Lobes and Haywire continue to perform on local Rap and Hip Hop stages, alongside other friends and collaborators. Both speak to the process of "sending it down the slopes" for the sake of artistry and personal growth and that feeling of being "Brand New" in the process. It was SO friggin' fun to sit down and chat with Lobes and Haywire, who I've personally known for several years now. Thanks for being here, this is what the hell is up.  Featured Songs:  Samurai Black, Cascades, Brand New  Find Lobes on Insta: @lobesmusic https://lobesmusic.com/ Find Haywire on Insta: @prod_hywr https://musmktg.com/prod-hywr CREDS: Pod Logo: Sarah Day  Pod Promo Art: Aubrey McMichael  Pod Music: Afterspace Pod Recording, Editing, Mixing: Claire <3 you,  Clairey

2.27: What the hell is up? Clouds! FEAT. music by LA FONDA
It's the beginning of June and it's still cloudy in Seattle. What does that mean? It means Seattleites are still longing for sunnier weather, where we might crawl out of our shells and reconnect with ourselves and one another. I spent the long memorial weekend under a cloudy Spokane sky, so today's episode brings you reflections on cloudiness, the nature of clouds, and this idea of artistic delusion that keeps us both frustrated and inspired. Also enjoy my baby nieces yelling: WHAT THE F*CKING?! 2.26: What the hell is up with Biblioteka's new single Where Did We Go Wrong?
Hellllllo! What the hell is up, starlings? I'm back with ANOTHER episode! Today you'll hear from Mary Robins and Hexx Rodriguez of Biblioteka, Seattle-based garage, punk band who A) enthusiastically supports the efforts of your local library and 2) is here to F*CK SHIT UP, and by that they really mean, have a good friggin time. We discuss their recent single "Where Did We Go Wrong" which was put out as a tribute to Ukraine after a haunting experience right here in Seattle. We also muse over the idea of fried butter and whether it is better to choose to be a rock, river or tree. This is a fun, interesting, deep and hyggeligt episode, mixed with some groovy tunes! Biblioteka will be playing Fisherman's Village Music Festival on May 20th at 6:15 PM.  Featured songs:  Where Did We Go Wrong, Sunday Scaries, Cruisin' USA, Double Vision  Check out Biblioteka online:  https://bibliotekaband.bandcamp.com/album/checked-out-ep https://www.biblioteka.us/ Meet me at Fisherman's Village:  https://www.thefishermansvillage.com/ Creds:  Pod Music: Afterspace Pod Logo: Sarah Day  Pod Managament: Callan Moore Editing, recording, mixing: ME Have a magical week <3,  Clairey

2.25: What the hell is up with the Green Wave? FEAT. F*ck you Brett Kavanaugh by QUEEN CHIMERA
What the hell is up, stars? What a magical time to be a woman... Am I right? You can get a tinder date in 2 seconds flat any night of the week yet your right to bodily autonomy and reproductive decision making may be on the brink of loss. On May 3, I headed into the streets with my chosen family to protest the Supreme Court's potential overturning of Roe vs. Wade. I know you've already heard about this by now, but I'm here to ask what the hell is up with the green wave? This movement to color a nation with green became a symbol across Latin America, and now its our turn to become a wave of green for abortion rights. In today's episode, you'll hear from Margo Heights, leader of Seattle's Rise Up 4 Abortion. You'll also hear the protest BANGER "Fuck You Brett Kavanaugh" by Seattle riot band Queen Chimera. 2.24: What the hell is up with finding beauty in the Ugly? FEAT. Thavoron
Based in Seattle, Thavoron has been busy creating folk-alt music that's accompanied him on a journey of finding boldness to claim his artistic identity and see beauty even when life feels Ugly. In today's episode, Thavoron and I sat down for spicy tea in my pod studio to chat about the story behind his EP Bold and his full-length album Ugly. Thav and I dive deep in vulnerability here, reflecting on heartbreak, queerness and love. Thav is a young artist with a TON of personality, talent and thoughtfulness. We laughed over the folly of constantly seeking to mend our experiences, yet forgive our past selves. Listen in stars, this one's juicy. OH! 2.23: What the hell is up with strawberries and your authentic self? FEAT. Baby Please by THEM
What the hell is up stars??? A crisp spring sky, and one that might hopefully find itself cloudless sometime soon. I've been thinking about the idea of an authentic self and finding sweetness as we change and the world changes. I met a sheep named Jimmy the other day, so I'd like to dedicate this podcast to him. He was brave to shed old mangy wool even if his friends weren't ready to accept him for that.  In today's episode, you'll hear the melodic, easy-going and heart-throbby sounds of THEM, a Seattle-based teen gal band sensation. THEM is full of talent, newness, groovy vibes and enough youthful storytelling to remind you of your teenage self. 2.22: What the hell is up with Dubstep and creative flow? FEAT. Afterspace
What the hell is up, stars? Have you ever been in the car with that friend who completely hogs the aux but doesn't read the room? Compare that to being in the club with your besties, a round of tequila shots and a DJ who keeps the groove set right the entire night. DJs have a magical ability to read the room and  manipulate the energy of a crowd through music.  In today's episode, I chatted with Afterspace, who is a multi-genre electronic artist, DJ and producer, who created the music for season two of What the Hell is Up. We discussed his story of becoming a DJ and artist of Dubstep--a genre I had not fully appreciated until this conversation (but am now obssessing over, especially if I'm listening while wielding a Light Saber). We explore ideas about finding creative flow and you'll hear a creative reflection inspired by a tarot card reading.
