Episode 4 - Who Wins, Who Cries, Who Tells Their Story...the 72nd Annual Tony Awards
We're back to Radio City Hall this week for a wrap up retrospective of the 2018 Tony Awards! We talk about our general impressions of the award show and appraise the performances of Sara Bareilles and Josh Groban as this year's hosting pair. After going through this year's winners (lots of The Band's Visit fyi), we have a discussion about how people respond in the wake of winning or losing at awards, discussing the importance of continuing to support others in their successes. Also in this episode, we share our favourite speeches from the night and expand upon why they resonated with us. This segues into a conversation about Robert Di Niro's outburst and how we feel about it in the politically charged times of 2018. A (somewhat lighter) wrap-around of the performances from the night ensues as we discuss which performances we thought best represented their show. From here, we look at awards and speeches that didn't make CBS' broadcast and finally wrap up with a discussion of Australia's own upcoming awards ceremony (this weekend!). Episode 3 - A Dreamlover's Beautiful Tapestry...Mixing Style & Storytelling in Jukebox Musicals
In our third episode for season one, we (in typical Matt and Dan fashion) try to pack even more into a single episode by taking a look at not one, but TWO shows. We look at a musical format that's gaining even more popularity on Broadway these days: the biographical jukebox musical. We compare and contrast two such shows, including our first ever Australian show (both of which have played in Melbourne recently).By comparing Beautiful: The Carole King Musical and Dreamlover: The Bobby Darin Musical (inventive, we know), we look at what makes a good jukebox musical, and why some are more effective than others. Given that they both occur in the same time period, Matt brings a very detailed timeline comparison, which we use as our springboard to unpack the narrative and music. We dip our toes in the waters of chord structure and music theory to understand why some songs sound a little too familiar and we round off with a healthy dose of design discussion. We canvas music from the 30s all the way to the 60s, banter and sass each other along the way and gain an insight into the true nature of Dan's Parks and Rec obsession. We dive into the sounds of 1950s/60s pop, Matt discovers way all songs sound the same, and Dan elucidates the lyrical meaning behind some of King's greates hits. Episode 2 - Predictions of a Theatrical Nature...The Tony Nominations
In only our second episode, we deviate from the norm and get our competition on, as we see who can successfully pick the most winners for the 2018 Tony Awards! We take a look at all the musical categories and discuss all the nominations (as well as some of the shows and talent that perhaps should have been). We also discuss the shows and the talent we thought deserved better and why Frozen has been left out in the cold with voters this year. Sound design comparisons between Australia and Broadway are made and discussed, and Dan continues on his crusade to try and get the Australian Tour of Hairspray the credit it really deserved. Also on this episode, Matt questions Dan’s obsession with The Band’s Visit and ponders who will get played off stage at the awards ceremony. How right were they? All will be revealed on June 10, so join the Way Off Broadway journey, right here, right now - quips and entertainment included! Which actor will get played off stage following a lengthy and teary thank you speech? Who will have the most GIF-worthy audience reaction that will get replayed for days after? Episode 1 - Omigod you guys...it's Legally Blonde!
Our first full episode has dropped! And what better way to start our Way Off Broadway journey than by looking at one of our favourite shows, Legally Blonde: The Musical. In this episode, we ponder the show's narrative structure, its currently lucrative amateur and school mountings, and why we think the show is the quintessential screen to stage adaption. Musical musings: O'Keefe and Benjamin's use of thematic material, affective key characteristics courtesy of Christian Shubart (who's that you ask!?), and why Positive is...well so damn positive! Plus your greater-than-average dose of banter, tangents and fun times. After weeks of figuring out how the mics work, trying multiple times to record and then trying to get online, we have an episode! Join us (Matt and Dan) as we tackle one of our perennial favourites, Legally Blonde the Musical, the first show we truly bonded over and also the first show we ever saw together (albeit an amateur production). In this episode, you see just how nerdy we can be as we overview Legally Blonde's synopsis, production, award history, life after Broadway, music and design. We put our music degrees to good (debatable) use as we take an in-depth look at the show's musical construction, using examples to analyse how it uses musical motive and foreshadowing. We also take a look at how songs are developed, axed and rewritten as a show gets closer to its Broadway transfer. Of course, there are plenty of laughs and lots of banter along the way and after you listen to this ninety-minute extravaganza, we hope you're equally convinced that you should love this show! LINKSThe much referenced, quintessential MTV broadcast of the show, aired in 2007 with Laura Bell Bundy as Elle Woods: Legally Blonde - The MusicalThe various iterations of 'the song before the hair salon': "Beacon of Positivity", performed by Kerry Butler: Legally Blonde Demo - 5.
