This week I'm joined by relationship coach and author Jordan Gray, who decided one day to radically change his life and really start living life on his own terms. Episode 12: Ben Greenfield on Moving a Location-Based Business Online
My guest today is Ben Greenfield, an incredible fitness coach, trainer, and author. In 2008 he was voted the #1 personal trainer in the USA, and has helped thousands of people transform their bodies and lives for the better. I met Ben a little while back, and was fascinated to hear how he shifted his personal training and performance coaching business from being a traditional "in the gym" kind of business to being almost entirely online, so that he can work from anywhere and spend more time with his wife and kids. Even though many people dream of being a personal trainer, the reality is that the hours can be grueling and it can end up feeling just like any other job. In this episode, Ben shares how he made the transition to a location-independent "lifestyle business," how he established himself as a top expert, and some of the cool and unique ways he makes money from his business! If you've ever dreamed of creating a business where you share your expertise with other people and still have the ability to travel and set your own schedule, you don't want to miss this episode! Episode 11: Farnoosh Brock on Having a Smart Exit Blueprint
This week I'm really excited to bring you Farnoosh Brock, an entrepreneur I'd wanted to meet and speak to ever since hearing her story on the Blogcast.fm podcast back in April of this year. I heard her story just as I was coming to the conclusion that I needed to finally leave the corporate world and go out on my own, but was having serious doubts about walking away from a cushy job that made good money and gave me a lot of freedom. Fortunately, I heard Farnoosh talk about how she'd felt exactly the same thing (and in what might have even been a better situation), but that it was the best thing she ever did. In this episode, Farnoosh shares her inspiring story with us, we talk about the important mindset shifts that need to talk place before you walk away from your job, and how to plan a solid exit strategy so you can leave on good terms and with a bright future ahead of you. Since leaving her corporate job at a Fortune 100 company (and eventually getting her husband to do the same), she has built a thriving business and blog called Prolific Living. I think you're going to love what she has to share- she was a big inspiration to me, and I know she'll be the same for you! More from Farnoosh: Smart Exit Blueprint - Get a FREE 5-video training series to help you figure out how to start the process of leaving your job and going out on your own. Prolific Living - Farnoosh's fantastic blog, where she shares advice on living life to the fullest and being successful on your own terms. Fast Track Promotion - If you're not quite ready to quit your corporate gig yet but would like to get the money and recognition you deserve, Farnoosh has a program that'll teach you how to quickly move up the corporate ladder. Episode 10: Peter Shallard on the Psychology of Success
My guest this week is Peter Shallard, the Shrink for Entrepreneurs. After starting out as a traditional psychotherapist, Peter discovered that he really enjoyed working with entrepreneurs on overcoming the psychological blocks that keep them from succeeding- things like limiting beliefs, procrastination, indecision, and more. He now exclusively works with entrepreneurs all over the world to help them achieve their goals and be their best selves. This was a great conversation, as Peter and I discussed a lot of the most common problems entrepreneurs face, and how to overcome them. Because of his background and training, he brings a totally unique and different perspective to the discussion than people who view entrepreneurism as purely a business issue. Peter's understanding of how our mindset affects our success, and what we can do to keep ourselves from stumbling into the same traps over and over again, was really refreshing and interesting to me. By the end of the interview I had recognized some big mistakes I was making, and am already changing my mindset and my business accordingly! If you struggle with procrastination, indecisiveness, having "too many ideas," or other beliefs or patterns that you know are holding you back from accomplishing your goals, this is the episode for you! More from Peter: Commit Action - Peter's free training series designed to help you overcome procrastination, which is one of the biggest obstacles to success in business and in life. PeterShallard.com - Peter's blog on wealth, freedom, and sanity for entrepreneurs. It has some of the most unique and interesting writing on business anywhere! It's one of my "must-read" blogs. Episode 9: Six Things to Do Before You Quit Your Job
I'm mixing it up this week! I've been having guests every week, but for this episode I wanted to do something a little different. This week, I share some lessons I learned both before and since quitting my day job: namely, 6 things you should do before you leave so that you can go out on a high note and hit the ground running once you're out on your own. There are a couple of tips among the 6 that I learned the hard way since quitting my job, so I wanted to share them with you so you can avoid making the same mistakes I did. You'll see what I mean during the show. These six things will be a big help to anyone who's close to quitting, or wants to start laying the groundwork to make it happen. They range from the highly practical to getting your head straight, and all of them are critical to your future success. I hope you enjoy the solo format! Let me know what you think in the comments so I know whether to keep occasionally doing episodes like these, or whether you'd always prefer to hear from guests instead of my blathering! :) Super Cool Announcement Thingy Just as a heads up, I'm finishing up a really cool free training I'm doing as a thanks for subscribing to my email list. It should be ready within the next week or so, so if you haven't subscribed yet, be sure to do that here! Keep Listening: Subscribe on iTunes - Please leave a review if you enjoy the show! Episode 8: John Corcoran on Entrepreneurial Networking Strategies
Want to network your way out of your day job and into your own business? You NEED to listen to this episode. I'd say there are more actionable tips in this episode than in any episode so far, and it's on one of my favorite topics: networking. I recently connected with John Corcoran, who is a master networker who has turned his ability to connect with people into a series of interesting career moves. He's done everything from politics to law to entrepreneurism, and has used the exact same networking strategies he talks about in this episode to connect with people in practically any industry. We spend a lot of time discussing how to use networking to build a bridge from your day job to your new business, and how to do it even if you're shy, not well-connected now, and don't have a lot of time or money to travel or spend all day on social media. In this episode, you'll learn: Why networking is one of the most powerful (and underused) business strategies around The best places to start networking How to identify the right networking events to attend How to network even if you're shy or introverted How to avoid being "that guy" when it comes to networking The incredibly easy way to get people to love you How to know if you're at the wrong networking event How to network through social media, without wasting hours a day John's 7-step process for networking mastery And much more! If networking is something you know you should be doing but don't know how, PLEASE be sure to listen to this episode. And if you don't know how important networking is, you can't afford to miss it. And if you know how important networking is but don't want to do it anyway, then you're going to be in big trouble ;) I'd love to hear your comments or questions for John in the comment section below! And please consider sharing this with your friends or family if you think it would help them. Episode 7: Valerie Young on Profiting From Your Passions
This week I'm incredibly excited to welcome career coach, author, and personal mentor of mine, Valerie Young, to the show. She's helped thousands of people figure out how to translate their interests and passions into real income. In some cases it's a full-time income, in other cases it's a healthy side income or multiple streams of income that allow them to live life on their terms. She has an amazing talent for identifying money-making opportunities that people can put into action right away, and in this episode of War on Work she shares lots of tips for figuring out how you could start making a side income or turning your passions into a business that gives you the life you want. This is one of the most advice-driven episodes of War on Work yet, and I think you'll come out of it with all kinds of ideas for identifying the business of your dreams. In this episode, you'll learn: How Valerie got stuck in the "golden handcuffs" of the corporate world The wake up call that led her to totally change course Why asking "What should I be doing with my life?" is the wrong question, and what to ask instead The major traffic source Valerie uses to get exposure and business that most people never think to try How to get your foot in the door with major media and news sources, and the two things they care about Why social media makes media outreach easier than ever How to identify business ideas that will actually make money and meet your lifestyle needs Examples of real people who have started unique lifestyle business, both online and offline Why you don't need to know everything to start a business in a niche The key question to ask to know if there's money in your passion Ways to make money from your passion even if there aren't "buying customers" Why "professional dabbling" is a great first step What to do if you suffer from "impostor syndrome" We cover an amazing amount of ground in this episode, and there's a ton of helpful advice no matter where you are in your exit plan! Valerie is someone I spoke to many times while planning my own exit from the corporate world, and she can help you too. I'd love to hear your thoughts, ideas, or questions for Valerie in the comments. Episode 6: Sean Malarkey on Partnering, Producing, & Living the Dream
This week I'm excited to welcome serial entrepreneur and surf bum Sean Malarkey to the show. I've known Sean for a few years, and in that time he's created an incredibly successful business selling information products that teach people how to use social media platforms to grow their businesses, establish themselves as an expert, and much more. One of the coolest things about his business, though, is that he lets other people be the expert and focuses on being the producer, handling the marketing, packaging, customer support, and more. It's a business that allowed him to move to Santa Barbara to spend more time surfing and less time working. He shares how he built the business, his take on building an amazing team to support you, and his thoughts on work/lifestyle balance. In this episode, you'll learn: Why Sean left the corporate world, even though he was running the company How Sean established himself as an expert and gained a huge following via social media One of the best marketing techniques for growing your audience, establishing yourself as an expert, and easy selling How he uses partnering and producing to create amazing products in a short amount of time, and how you can do the same Why he decided to scrap his virtual team and have a local office again How he balances his free time with his work time Why Sean created his own great podcast recently, and what he hopes to achieve with it And much more! Sean has built a really fun and successful business for himself, and his business model is something I highly recommend if you feel like you don't have the time to create your own products or feel nervous about being "the expert" on your topic. Check out the interview now and let me know what you think! More from Sean: The Money Pillow - Sean's great new podcast where he interviews people who are legitimately "making money in their sleep." There are some really cool success stories on here! LinkedInfluence - A product Sean and his partner Lewis created to teach people how to use LinkedIn to generate sales, leads, influence, and more. FBInfluence - A product Sean produced with Facebook expert Amy Porterfield that shows how to use Facebook for business. It's a great example of the producer model at work. Episode 5: Ryan Lee on Making Big Things Happen
This week I'm excited to welcome my good friend and mentor Ryan Lee to the show. Ryan started out as a full-time PE teacher in a rough neighborhood and now runs a hugely successful 7-figure lifestyle business. It wasn't a fluke, either; Ryan still hustles as hard as anyone I know, is constantly trying new things and pushing himself to do more, and most of all loves what he does. I think you'll really enjoy hearing how Ryan went from humble beginnings to where he is today by working hard, constantly learning and improving, and making products that people can't wait to buy. In this episode, you'll learn: How Ryan started a thriving web business in the late 90s, with no technical skills, no marketing background, and very little money How he made the successful transition from day job to lifestyle business, with no risk Little "tricks" that help you be more productive and reach your goals How to really light a fire under your butt Why a "7" just isn't good enough Why getting a product out there is better than getting it perfect How to increase your income with "hard" topics instead of "soft" topics The real secret to making significant money as an infopreneur or author How to create products that people can't wait to buy Easy pricing, using the 10x rule How Ryan started learning marketing despite not having a business background The worst and best parts of being an entrepreneur, according to Ryan And much more! Ryan is a very inspirational guy, and someone I always recommend to people who are struggling to get their dream business underway. This episode will help get you on the right track to making big things happen in your life!
