Discover Your Talent ~ Do What You Love With Army Veteran Don Hutcheson Ep. 255
Don Hutcheson is a lifelong entrepreneur, inventor, author and coach. He hosts the podcast: “Discover Your Talent—Do What You Love,” three days a week, which he created to help you find your true talents and use them to build a career of success, satisfaction and freedom. He’s never had a “boss” and has created 6 innovative companies in advertising, publishing, coaching and career planning—and now on the Internet—over the last 40 years. Don Hutcheson- Lifelong Entrepreneur Don was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia.  He was educated there in public schools and attended Emory University.  Don served 3 years in the United States Army in Military Army Security Agency.  He was set to take a teaching job when a friend of his started a magazine and asked him to join him in the magazine field. “After 6 companies later in the fields of publishing, advertising and career planning and now on the internet I have been a lifelong entrepreneur.” – Don Hutcheson Strategically Transitioning Don has learned over the past 45 years as an entrepreneur that you must first answer the question “who?”  Most start with their “why” or their “purpose.” “If you don’t know your who and you don’t know who you are from every perspective possible, not just your skills, but your abilities and your values and your personal style your stage of adult development. If you don’t know who you are and how you engage the world it is virtually impossible to then do that strategy to figure out your why your how and your when.” – Don Hutcheson In order to find out who you are there is an assessment that will tell you what your innate abilities from the inside out.  It is a 3 hour test that can tell you your innate problem solving communications and learning styles that no other assessment does.  Don has also put together another assessment to figure out your innate abilities . Discovering What You Are Good At Using the assessment that Don talks about in his interview also helps a person figure out what they are good at.  It is likely that younger people could learn early on their strengths and weaknesses to lead them in a more practical and applicable pathway that fits their abilities.   “A person who knows the range of his abilities is better able to use them in his life and work and in his relations with others, including his fellow workers..” – Don Hutcheson To hear more from Don Hutcheson download this episode. Piecing Together Veterans Untold Stories with Author Stephen Moore Ep. 251
Stephen Moore, a sixth generation Texan, is the author of nineteen books on World War II and Texas history. His latest, Uncommon Valor from the Naval Institute Press, follows a Special Forces recon company in Vietnam. Steve, his wife, and their three children make their home north of Dallas, Texas. While not military himself, Stephen has been writing about military history for about 23 years. He is a marketing advertising professional by trade, but is passionate about collecting history from veterans. Stephen Moore- Researching Untold Stories Stephen Moore does his research by going to those guys that were in the trenches and spending time with them and trying to get the untold stories. He wants to know what they were thinking, what they were feeling, not just what might be in some action report.  Stephen wants to hear the real sweat and fear of being out in the jungle and what they experienced. “It's a scramble because a lot of those guys are gone and the ones I've got left or 96, 99, 100 years old, their stories going to be around much longer.” – Stephen Moore Paying Tribute Stephen Moore does his research by going to those guys that were in the trenches and spending time with them and trying to get the untold stories. He wants to know what they were thinking, what they were feeling, not just what might be in some action report.  Stephen wants to hear the real sweat and fear of being out in the jungle and what they experienced. “Speaking with these guys one on one at their reunions and getting the stories. It was an effort just to piece the story together. But what they accomplished was quite remarkable.” – Stephen Moore Current Project Stephen has been spending the past couple of years working on a book about naval aviation and the carrier battles in world war two. Stephen has been interviewing some of the fighter pilots, specifically some of the aces that flew during the Okinawa campaign in 1945. These are the guys that went up against the massive kamikaze waves coming in daily.  Kind of a last ditch effort to save Okinawa and these islands before America moved onto the homeland. “These guys are 96, 98, some of them are around a hundred years old that I'm talking to and unfortunately or I guess expectedly a handful of them have passed  just since I started taking on this project. So I kind of feel that the urge to interview as many people as I can while we still are blessed to have a few of these folks around.” – Stephen Moore To hear more from Stephen Moore and his experiences, download this episode. Products that sell quickly give you energy to create your own product and brand.  Low risk, low start-up funds led Liran to continue launching products and learning as much as possible to get that edge on competitors. “The Amazon platform is built for searches based on keywords not on brand searches.” – Liran Hirschkorn Amazing Freedom Course Liran and Andy Slamans joined forces and transitioned to a video course.  Students can watch videos and learn content to apply immediately. The course starts with how to find a product to sell, how you differentiate that product, how you assess the competition and how you source the product.  There are videos on creating listings, keywords, launching the product, advertising and this is just the tip of the iceberg. “Networking with other sellers has been a huge growth factor in my business. I’d love to get connected with you and see what advanced selling strategies could be improved.” – Liran Hirschkorn Inner Circle and Canton Fair The Inner Circle is part of the Amazing Freedom course and available to students free for 3 months once you buy the course.  This FB group gives access to Liran, Andy and Nathan to ask questions, learn from others in the circle and product evaluations that the 3 of them vet every weekend and provide feedback.  Amazing Freedom is giving 1 year free of Inner Circle access for veterans once the course is purchased. Go to amazingfreedom.com/veteran. Amazing Freedom is also taking another trip to the Canton Fair in China in April of 2019.  The Canton Fair is a 3 week trade show where you can see the products you would like to source.  You get to see the quality of the products and network with suppliers. You can find information at Amazingfreedom.com/chinatrip.   “The benefit of coming on the trip, you don’t need me to walk you around the fair but where I can help you is with my experience to vet the products you see.” – Liran Hirschkorn To hear more about Amazing Freedom from Liran Hirschkorn, download this episode. Hope For Veterans Battling PTSD with Army Veteran Connie Louie-Handelman Ep. 245
Connie Louie-Handelman joined the US Army at the age of 56 because she was disturbed by the high rates of PTSD and suicide among warriors... she wanted to make a difference.  Many US veterans still struggle with PTSD years after their service in the Middle Eastern wars. An Army psychologist, Connie Louie-Handelman, treated hundreds during a tour of duty in Afghanistan. She's written a vivid memoir entitled "The Hidden War: PTSD on the Front Lines – Memoirs of a Psychologist Treating Warriors at a Forward Operating Base in Afghanistan." Connie Louie-Handelman- Invisible Enemies After training, she was deployed at a forward operating base in the hot and dusty plains of Kandahar, Afghanistan. There she found soldiers fighting more than the enemies they encountered in the battlefield. The casualty rate from invisible enemies like anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, and fear was high. When improvised explosive devices killed or wounded warriors near the base, she would journey "outside the wire" to units that were under attack. Besides their shattering experiences on the battlefield, Louie-Handelman eloquently describes the suffering of warriors locked in domestic tragedies, with spouses having affairs or wanting divorces, or children going astray. “I had to learn how to be a soldier, that was an experience.” – Connie Louie-Handelman Serving Those Outside the Wire Connie started her career as a psychologist as a clinic supervisor then a director for 8 ½ years and prior to that she was a police officer in San Francisco for 11 years.  She took a break and became familiar with the high rate of suicide in the military and saw that they would take for older health professionals. Connie applied and was accepted. “I signed up and was accepted at the age of 57, a year after going through all of the background checks and all the paperwork.” – Connie Louie-Handelman Trauma Management Psychologist were placed in the field to deal with soldiers sooner rather than later.  Soldiers KIA were able to process the feeling and have open dialogue in groups so the healing could start.  Connie would also be available after groups for individual counseling. “I think that was really helpful to be more up front and to catch it earlier so then it perhaps doesn’t blow up to be full PTSD.” – Connie Louie-Handelman To hear more from Connie Louie-Handelman and her experience, download this episode. Care Packages For Our Troops with Navy Veteran Chelsea Mandello Ep. 243
Chelsea Mandello is the founder and CEO of Troopster Military Care Packages. A veteran, Chelsea served in the U.S. Navy as a Photojournalist for 7 years, where she travelled more than 13 countries.  Additionally she travelled across 9 different ships reporting the Navy's story. Consequently, it was during a difficult deployment in 2013 that Chelsea recognized the need for a personalized care package solution that led to the launching of Troopster in 2015. “My job was to tell the navy’s story; it was an awesome job.” – Chelsea Mandello Chelsea Mandello- Hard & Fast Transition During active duty, Chelsea founded Troopster when she was active duty.  She was in a remote area where receiving mail and packages was difficult and took a lot of coordination.  As a result, the packages were “heartbroken” and items had gone bad and escaped the original intent of the care package.  Chelsea researched for 2 years and developed a business plan as to what a care package company should look like. Consequently, Troopster was founded. Chain of Command Mandello got lucky with her chain of command who was very supportive of her effort whole being active duty.  She engaged in entrepreneurial classes with Boots to Business that were offered.  Chelsea was very open with her command about her endeavors and as a result found that they were very helpful and accepting unlike other chains of command. “I love what I do; It feels like I have the absolute best job in the world; I get to connect mom's, dad’s, spouse’s with their troops to make personalized care packages , add photos and send directly overseas.” – Chelsea Mandello Growing a Business To date, excluding holiday months, Troopsters sells approximately 700 packages throughout the year and even more, the donations sent out are 4 times that amount.  Troopsters is ramping up their donations  drive and Chelsea currently does not take a salary. In 2019 she is looking to expanding with more staff, developing a board who believes in Troopster's mission and becoming internationally known.   To hear more from Chelsea Mandello, download this episode. Asset Protection for Real Estate Investors with Scott Smith Ep. 239
Scott Smith is a real estate investor and asset protection attorney in Austin, Texas. He graduated from Albany Law School and began his career in high-stakes corporate litigation. He is the founder and CEO of Royal Legal Solutions, serving investors and companies across the US. With experience in entrepreneurship, starting several successful companies and owning real estate in 10 states, Scott will pull from his expertise as a lawyer to put a new and valuable perspective on business ownership. Scott Smith – Fight or Flight Scott graduated with a bachelor's degree in Liberal Arts and was unsuccessful in securing a job right out of college.  As a result, Scott competed in the MMA for a couple of years. He then transitioned to real estate investing for 8 years and then did litigation work for 4 years.  Scott was now doing legal fighting; playing what he called “mental chess.” “The mental side of fighting, that’s the part that is draining.  When you have the flight or fight response, your brain doesn’t really know that much of a difference between when I’m stepping inside a cage versus when I’m stepping inside a courtroom.  There’s still the same attack mentality ad defense mentality and the fight of flight is in there the whole time.” – Scott Smith Final Transition Scott then transitioned back to real estate investing after burning out and becoming fatigued.  It was a natural transition. He now helps others with asset protection which is a level of protection that if you’re sued you don’t need to worry about it.  His business he realized that most real estate investors and entrepreneurs have no idea how to use the law to insulate themselves.  Scott assist clients in tax saving strategies to help pay for everything that Royal Legal Solutions can provide. Legal Strategy The first legal question is regarding setting up an LLC.  Scott shares that most people have an idea for a business and they form an LLC.  He advises to keep it simple. Set up your LLC and then file S-Corporation with the IRS. You then become an employee of the S-Corporation.  Finally, you will need to file a separate tax return. “You will save yourself over 15% on self-employment tax..” – Scott Smith To hear more strategies for your business from Scott Smith, download this episode. Paul knew leadership, team building and soft skills from the military. Dan Burton – Drones in the Business World Before founding DroneBase, Dan Burton analyzed industries for global corporations on Goldman Sachs Technology, Media & Telecom Group. He initially became a drone enthusiast during his service as a Marine Infantry Officer in Iraq and Afghanistan from 2007 - 2011. While in the Marines, the drone industry was just getting started and he watched it grow from the likes of the first desktop computers to iPhones. Burton started his career as a Special Projects Assistant in the U.S. Senate. Burton has an MBA from Harvard Business School and a Bachelor of Arts from New York University. “For any veteran, the transition may be under-appreciated; that’s a difficult thing.” – Dan Burton Quick Transition The transition from the Marine Corps to Harvard Business School definitely came up quick for Dan.  He loves the USMC and everything it stands for. Dan lived in New York during September 11 and saw it all happen.  As a result, the events of 9-11 caused Dan to take a deeper look at his military training.  Consequently, he realized that in the USMC their drone technology was second to none. “Drone technology that was miniaturizing and computerizing; I really believe that it would transform the business world.” – Dan Burton Starting a Business Dan initially left the finance world with no income and no healthcare to start his business.  Hence, the clock was ticking but he was passionate about his belief drone technology could transform the business world.  He sought out anyone who was doing commercial drone operations including veterans who had worksites and started doing work for free to put his company out there.   “It’s really hard to start a business; I would only recommend doing it if there is a problem you really want to see solved.” – Dan Burton Don’t forget to leave us a 5-star rating and review if you enjoyed the show. Mel Deaile– Training to Combat Mel Deaile, grew up in Fresno, California.  He attended the Air Force Academy after high school to study Astronomical Engineering.  Mel then went to pilot training at Williams Air Force Base and within a year was flying combat missions as part of Desert Storm from Diego Garcia over Iraq. “Within a year I got about 9 total missions mainly against the republican guard.” – Mel Deaile Planning For Transition The transition from the Air Force was relatively easy for Mel due to planning ahead.  Prior to transitioning a job opened up at the Center for Unconventional Weapon Studies in Nuclear Deterrence and studies nuclear policy. He applied, received the job and started his academia career. “Make the transition when the opportunity is there.” – Mel Deaile Domineering Force Del is the author of Always at War.  The book looks at Strategic Air Command (SAC) from its inception through the Cuban Missile Crisis.  Del says the primary reason for the book is to look at how SAC became the domineering force in the Air Force for about the first 2 decades that the Air Force was independent. “A lot of people, when you say SAC automatically think of General Curtis LeMay.” – Mel Deaile Don’t forget to leave us a 5-star rating and review if you enjoyed the show.
