Ideas for Mischief - Civil disobedience in animal rights
In the very first, weekly Vegan Beanz podcast Justin and Catherine take some inspo from their 80s, 90s and 00s activist predecessors and ask, does civil disobedience still have a place in animal rights? Does it matter if non-vegans react negatively to it? Does animal rights activism really have to be non-vegan approved? Beanz on the Roof & Liberation Pledge
Find out why Justin Beanz has been spending hours on a roof and then join us for a chat about the liberation pledge. Does the choice not to sit with people consuming our animal friends, help or hinder the animal rights movement? Is it a powerful statement or something that is likely to turn people off veganism? Single Issue Campaigns vs Abolitionist Approach
In this episode Catherine and Justin chat about Single Issue Campaigns vs the Abolitionist Approach. Are animal rights activists wasting time when they campaign against single issues like vivisection, live export or saving certain species of animals? Or is that a good way to attract people to the movement and bring about change for animals that are suffering right now? Does Gary Francione just really like criticising other vegans? Should everyone get on a roof? Justin and Catherine tie their brains in knots trying to find the answers. The End of the World as an Activism Opportunity
The End of the World as an Activism Opportunity: How to reach carnists that don't care about animals. Climate scientists are saying we have just 12 years to take massive action or climate catasrophe will wipe us out. So, in this episode we’ll be asking the question: is veganism more extreme than the end of the world? Many carnists seem to think so. All signs point to a vegan lifestyle as the only way to stop inevitable disaster. So, why the hell is that not enough for people? Are they really willing to let their children die over a bacon butty? What can we do, as animal activists, to draw attention to this crisis and make more vegans? How can we piggy back on the environmental movement to reach more people? We’ll also find out what’s the scoop from the coop at NSW Hen Rescue, do a little follow up where we discuss the use of the words, 'rape' and 'holocaust' in animal activism as well as the best places to sticker, catch up on some news and have a laugh at our prick of the week. Is There Good in Meat Industry Workers? Or Are Some People Just Shit?
In this episode we’ll be asking the question, is there good in everyone? A lot of vegans advocate empathy and respect towards slaughterhouse workers, butchers, slaughter truck drivers and even those that work on the kill floor. But do these people deserve our compassion? Are they all forced to be there… or are some people just shit? By showing slaughterhouse workers respect are we betraying the animals? We'll chat about some of the people who have changed from animal abuser to vegan. Do they prove that everyone has potential or are they the exception that proves the 'some people are shit' rule? We’ll also find out what’s the scoop from the coop at NSW Hen Rescue, do a little follow up, find out what Catherine learned at the Animal Activist Forum, catch up on some news and have a laugh at our prick of the week. Lancashire lad, David, proves that dreams really do come true. He called and pestered us enough that Catherine finally let him on the show. He also happens to have a ton of knowledge on vegan health. David and Catherine will take a look at the lies and deception used by animal ag to promote animal flesh and secretions as health products. He'll bust some myths, have a chat about fat vegans, talk about the guy who only eats meat and chat about how we can promote a healthy vegan lifestyle as part of our activism without overpromising or letting down the animals. Plus we'll get the scoop from the coop at NSW Hen Rescue, chat about new doco Running for Good, do a little follow up where we find out if reading the book Every 12 Seconds has changed Catherine's mind about slaughterhouse workers, catch up on some news and have a laugh at our prick of the week. Beanz at the Movies
In this episode Justin Beanz and Catherine Kelaherb finally do that film review they've been going on about. It's the doco that started it all for Catherine back in 2010 and Justin has an interesting take on it too. Perhaps the most underrated animal rights doco in history; Peaceable Kingdom. Yes the vibe is 90s af but we look at whether it still has a lot of potential to use in today's activism and think it may be the key to convincing some of our pesky carnist family members to make the change. Since the film uses a lot of sanctuary footage, it gives us a chance to chat about the role of rescue and sanctuaries in activism and the transformation of several people in the film from carnist scum farmer to vegan/potential extra husband for Kelaherb. Plus... get the latest scoop from the coop from NSW Hen Rescue, find out what we thought of The Cruelty Free Festival in Sydney (warning: there's ranting) and have a laf at our very deserving prick of the week. Plus bonus, surprise prick!

The Populate Debate: Human Overpopulation as a Vegan Issue
A sperm in the hand is worth 2 in the cervix? In this family sized episode, stand in Beanz, David Roberts joins Kelaherb to talk about breeding. With carnists always banging on about killing every 'overpopulated' non-human animal species, we feel it is time for a discussion about the most destructive species on earth... humans. With the global population growing at a rate of 228,000 extra people a day, should we feel happy or sad when a non-vegan brings a new carnist into the world? Can a vegan, knowing what we know, bring a child into a world of suffering in good conscience? Could the the earth benefit from us creating lots of little vegans? Or should we be aiming for castration of the nation? We also chat about ways in which David is wrong, our hopes for cell based meat, the ups and downs of caring for chickens rescued from the meat industry, the latest Scoop from the Coop and yet another glorious prick of the week. If you'd like to know more about caring for liberated large breed chickens check out Farm Sanctuary's resources here: https://www.farmsanctuary.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/Animal-Care-Large-Breed-Chicken.pdf Send all negative feedback to the complaints department @JustinBeanz and all suggestions, prick of the week nominations and questions to email@example.com

Vegan Xmas Spectacular... with Very Very Very Special Guest
On the 12th day of xmas the vegans gave to me… this 12th Vegan Beanz episode. And guess what?... The elusive Justin Beanz is finally back and full of Christmas cheer. Kelaherb and Beanz have truly embraced the silly part of 'silly season' and will bring you a (ridiculous in places) festive wrap up of notable and positive vegan activism that happened in 2018. From disruptions and liberations to amazing food tech advances and a film to change the world, we’ll talk about what went down and what we can learn from it. Hanging around in the background is a very special guest with the biggest "Patreon" in town. He'll drop in every now and again to drop some wisdom. Hang around until the end of the episode to hear a heart felt confession. We’ll also find out what’s the scoop from the coop at hen rescue (including Beanz' questionable chicken naming abilities), do a little follow up from last weeks episode, catch up on some news and of course have a laugh at our prick of the week.

Are All Vegans Speciesist?
Happy New Year Listener! This episode Beanz and Kelaherb talk about their hopes and dreams for 2019. The Economist has dubbed 2019, 'The Year of the Vegan' and so your trusty co-hosts have set their sights high. Then in a mammoth news week the Herby Beanz explain why there can never be such a thing as 'no kill eggs', talk about cunts that hunt and why we believe the Gippy Goat disruption and liberation should be viewed as a success. In the main discussion the Vegan Beanz chat about speciesism and ask are vegans guilty of being speciesist? If so what we can do to recognise our own speciesism? How can we challenge it? And by doing so could we become less hypocritical and more effective activists? After all, we want to stand up for all animals... not just the cute ones. Finally the moment everyone has been waiting for. Who has won Prick of the Year? We know the excitement is killing you, but try to hold out until the end of the episode to find out who is taking home the prick shaped trophy.

Guide Dogs Tho
"I would go vegan but Guide Dogs tho..." Beanz and Kelaherb dive headfirst into controversy this episode as they chat about service animals from a vegan perspective and ask the question, 'Are they service animals or slave animals?' From therapy chickens to guide dogs and everyone in between. Do these animals have an equal and loving relationship with their human or are they being exploited? Just because we can see the benefit for people, does that make it okay? Whilst both of us are able bodied we have a fair crack at looking at this from all angles. Kelaherb has seen first hand how things can go wrong after some 'therapy chickens' were surrendered to the hen rescue. And how exactly should you respond when carnists try to trip you up with the 'Guide Dogs tho' argument? Plus find out how Herb and Beanz are doing with their New Year Resolutions, have a chat about the Gregg's vegan sausage roll media storm and find out why Piers Morgan may be the greatest vegan advocate of our time. Catch up on some news, including the latest awesome Veganuary updates and an inspiring story of a Mother's bid for freedom. Companion Animals - A Beanz Best Friend? Or Exploitation?
In this bumper 15th episode Justin Beanz and Catherine Kelaherb take an in depth look into companion animals. Is it ever really vegan to 'own' animals? Kelaherb talks about some of her failings with companion animals from her days as a carnist child and Beanz shows you how not to run a vegan dog food co-op. Beanz is pretty sure that everyone just needs to try harder to get their companion animals to eat vegan food, whilst Kelaherb is not so sure we're at the stage where the food is suitable for all companion animal needs. Luckily there are some very exciting cell-based developments on the horizon that could soon see our carnivorous companions' needs met without the slaughter of other animals. Your trusty co-hosts also take a look at the disturbing world of mouse farming for snake food and why keeping non-rescue snakes can never really be vegan. From colony cat care to fish sanctuaries Kelaherb and Beanz leave no stone unturned. Plus loads of good news stories on major vegan developments, more on Justin's odd ideas about cats, scoop from the coop and of course our prick of the week. You're gonna love it. Here are some of the resources mentioned on the show: Plant Based News article on ‘embarrassed vegans’ by Chas Newkey-Burden https://www.plantbasednews.org/post/opinion-dont-be-embarrassed-by-vegan-activism-its-not-about-you Nearly 3million Brits will go vegan in 2019. https://www.livekindly.co/nearly-3-million-people-vegan-2019-survey-finds/?fbclid=IwAR3QfggFStzJJyzJ-ZUIN5lgitklKLe5lBpveZzuTuy60zo-js4U8lubJAA Zoe Rosenberg runs onto field in football game to protest stadium’s links to Petaluma chickens and to promote #RightToRescue. https://www.plantbasednews.org/post/vegan-activist-ncaa-national-championship-game-protest-animal-suffering 62 NY State schools to take 2 weeks vegan challenge thanks to Proveg. https://www.livekindly.co/new-york-state-school-districts-vegan-good-life-challenge/ Modern Meadow developing cell-based leather https://www.livekindly.co/vegan-biotech-company-disrupt-100-billion-leather-industry/ Carnist Scum Mouse farmer: https://www.abc.net.au/news/rural/2015-05-08/mouse-and-snake-farmer/6452780 Cell-based dog, cat and snake food: https://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2018/08/vegan-pet-food-wild-earth/566723/ Later in the episode Kelaherb goes through the animal happiness check from her new book, Saving Animals: A Young Activist's Guide. The book will be available soon, but in the meantime you can use the list below. Work through the questions below for each of your animal friends. It will help you find ways to enrich their lives and make them happier. Does the animal have a healthy diet? Research the optimum diet for the species and see if you can improve your companion's diet or add variety. Does the animal have company of the same species? Would they benefit from a companion? Is the animal healthy? Are they due for a dental check? Worming? Flea treatment? Do they need a nail trim? Does the animal have enough space compared to their natural environment? Could you give them more space to explore? Think of ways to make the animal's enclosure replicate the best bits of their natural environment. Google search for ideas. Is the animal safe from predators? Is the animal protected from heat stress, cold and the elements? Is the animal getting enough exercise? Is the exercise fun and interesting for them? What does your animal friend do when you are not around? Do they have toys or other enrichment? Look on Pinterest to find ideas. Are they clean and groomed? Do they have any matts or tangles? Does the animal have their own space? Is there somewhere to relax and get away from humans? How much time do you spend with your animal friend either sitting with them, playing or walking them? If you were living the life your animal friend is living, how would you feel? What changes would you like? By this point you should have lots of thoughts on how to make your animal friends happier. Have fun trying them out. Email VeganBeanz@gmail.com with your topic ideas, questions, comments and prick of the week nominations.

Get a Job! Vegans at Work and the Activist Patreon Debate
Carnists just love yelling 'Get a Job!' at vegan activists. Little do they know most of us actually have jobs. If we didn't, how on earth would we afford all the vegan ice cream? In this episode David Roberts and Kelaherb dive deep into the vegan working world. Desperate times call for desperate measures and some of us vegans have found ourselves working very non-vegan jobs, like the time Kelaherb worked at Coles Express that sell bacon, eggs and tonnes of cow's milk. Other times we find ourselves working in jobs that do no extra harm to animals, but also don't do anything to help. That can be a hard thing to deal with when you've realised your purpose is to change the world for animals. You find yourself thinking, 'how the heck am I going to make time to get on a roof when I am trapped in this 9-5 filing TMA reports all day?! What a waste!' And then there is the Grand Goal, the Vegan Job. Yup, some lucky ducks have managed to find jobs working for vegan organisations. Other activists have started vegan businesses or set themselves up a Patreon to help fund their work. So why is it that a vegan who works for an outreach org, gets a pat on the back by our community, but a vegan who does the same work funded by Patreon gets a slap in the face? Stay to the end for a spectacular prick of the week involving some 'Disappointing, Apologist, Cunt Vegans.' Plus plenty of news and chatz.

The Twilight Zone
David Roberts and Catherine Killaherb get together and forget condoms! Geez, relax... we're talking about The Twilight Zone. Those grey areas of veganism that have vegans all in a tizzy online. Whilst most of us know these are not the discussions we should get bogged down in, it's these grey areas that carnists love to throw in our faces and shout 'hypocrisy!' They seem to think that because vegans can't avoid stepping on ants, that means it's okay for carnists to stab pigs and chickens in the throat (major eye roll). We chat about: Dirty vegans - those that chow down on animal products from a dumpster Are lions more vegan than carnists? Backyard eggs Second hand skins Roadkill - the 'vegan' who makes sporrans out of victims Football team sponsorship. Is David even a real vegan when his team are sponsored by Steggles? Seaweed Honey Veg grown by bee pollination. The old avocado, almond thing. Figs Palm oil Are vegan Magnums actually vegan? Vegan products from non-vegan companies Bivalves - oysters, mussels and clams... oh my! Self defense against mosquitoes and more! Vegan Dating: Sleeping with the Enemy?
Whilst the boys continue to luxuriate on their hols, Kelaherb is joined by stand in Bean, Sarah Morrison to talk about LOVE. Sarah is a psychiatric nurse, co-founder of Vegan Runners Australia and hen rescue volunteer extraordinaire, but her biggest qualification for this ep is that she is.... dating a carnist! We chat about vegan dating and relationships. Would you ever date a carnist? What about a hunter or butcher?! And if you are already in a loving relationship with a fully fledged Malzoan, how can you make it work? We also discuss activist relationships with non-activists and Kelaherb comes up with a brilliant idea to to help vegans on Tindr dates. We also have the scoop from the coop and catch up on some fascinating news stories including this gem of a meme from the North American Meat Institute: https://www.facebook.com/AmericanMeatInstitute/posts/2073927132645717 We talk about why more vegans should embrace the tree hugger lifestyle: https://www.smh.com.au/environment/sustainability/10-million-animals-a-year-die-from-tree-clearing-in-nsw-report-finds-20181107-p50eij.html?fbclid=IwAR2YfYSuj_4Ix9miAL0sbrekZHdFTzB5aq_0jBCPf7IXEtUIGCVuwFnHeWQ and whilst our prick of the week is particularly evil, don't worry we have a runner up prick for you to have a chortle at. Frontlines: Jill Phipps
Welcome to this extra special, new bonus series where Catherine Kelaher will take you deep into the secretive ALF case files to find out where we come from and who has fought on the frontlines before us. Each ep we will focus on one activist or one campaign from our history. What can we learn from these people who fought so hard for the innocent? How can we build on their work? How can we replicate their dedication and perhaps move forward with some of their fire? I don't think anyone will be surprised by the first ep in this series. Jill Phipps was a young mum and dedicated activist known in particular for her fierce work against live exports in the UK and her death under the wheels of a live export truck in 1995. Whilst that is an important part of our history, there was more to Jill than her tragic end and today we’re going to look at her activism and what we know about her as a person. BONUS - Carnist Dadcast
Oh brother! Do we have a treat for you today. Catherine Kelaher is joined by her carnist Dad, Martin Smith for a very special, bonus episode. Despite his carnist ways, Martin agreed to watch vegan doco Peaceable Kingdom and give his opinions. Now credit where credit is due Martin watched the film with an open mind. It was meant to be a short review ep, but as expected the conversation took many turns. Quite a few of those turns led to the question of whether vegan sausages should be allowed to be called sausages. Other classics to look out for include 'fish are there to be caught,' 'cruelty free slaughter,' 'humane farming' and 'we need factory farming to feed everyone.' It turns out there was a lot to talk about. Join Smith and Daughter as they bond over their mutual loathing of Piers Morgan, catch up on some UK news and end up with a surprising prick of the week. Plus listen out for a new argument that may not be on your carnist bingo card, 'management tho.' Okay, so this ep may have you pulling your hair out with frustration, but no doubt you will relate to this convo. Sometimes those we love feel like they are the least likely to change. It can be a challenge to remember the arguments we've heard hundreds of times are often new to the person thinking of them. Hopefully this ep will give you some hope as even Carnist Dad shows some willingness to change and agrees that nothing is okay when it comes to killing. Thanks to Carnist Dad for being such a good sport. He'll be vegan soon enough. Want to check out Catherine's new book, Saving Animals: A Young Activist's Guide? THE MAP! Bonus Episode
Listener, it simply couldn't wait until next week's episode. The Aussie Farms Map is now available to the public and it is causing quite the stir among 'Our F/Harmers'. They are losing their shit left, right and centre and it is simply beautiful to watch. In this short, but oh so sweet bonus ep Catherine Kelaher takes an in depth look at the interactive map that exposes animal exploitation around Australia. Starting off with, 'so what's the point of the map exactly?' And moving swiftly onto F/Harmer's reactions. I can sum it up quite simply here: 'Won't someone think of the children?!' Let's celebrate the amazing media coverage this has given the animals and the number of F/Harmer pricks that are now on our radar. Plus how exactly can you, the listener, use and add to the map? If you were worried that Fiona Simson (President of National Farmers' Federation) wouldn't feature... don't fret. She's here too. So relax, grab a spoon and your fave vegan ice cream and enjoy the shit show that is Australian agriculture.
