Do not waste your retirement
Don’t just do something to make yourself sound busy, do something that means something! You are not living in a vacuum. Neither are you living in the 1980’s where the opportunities for you were a paper route or another game of shuffleboard. You are living in a time of unlimited potential and opportunity! You are smart, you have a proven track record of achievement, you can take what you know and apply that to something new! All of what you are and what you know is transferable - Instead of looking at where you are, think about how you can use everything you know and transfer that to a new adventure! Do you know that 72% of pre-retirees, age 50 and older, say they want to keep working after they retire – and not? You don’t have to work like you are now, you can slow down and work at a pace that doesn’t leave you drained and considering a life as a hermit in the backwoods somewhere. Instead of wasting your time, find something fun, rewarding, that makes a difference, and contributes! Take what you know, the experience you have, the insight you possess and marry those with whatever you find that you are passionate about and enjoy whatever is born of those.

Remember all those years ago
Remember all those years ago when you came up with this wild-eyed idea that slowly turned into a dream before transforming into a company that grew beyond your wildest hopes? You think back to when you were building your company and the exhilaration you felt and find that it’s not quite the same anymore. You miss the challenges and excitement of those early days. But… you have the responsibility of managing the company you grew from a crazy idea no one else believed in. The excitement of building a company left you long ago, and you miss it! So… the question that must be asked is – what is holding you back from rekindling those feelings once again? There are people who are where you were all those years ago and who could use a person with your experience, intuition, and knowledge of building a successful, ongoing company. And who better to do that than you! So, time to tune up your resume, and begin looking around for a new gig. At any one point in time, there are companies out there looking for someone who has just the skills, knowledge, experience, and intuition you possess.

Some of the vast number of things you can do in retirement
Years ago, the word "retirement" conjured up images of white-haired couples rocking away their time in rocking chairs or playing shuffleboard. Today, though, people are living longer and healthier lives well into their later years. As a result of these changes retirement has become an extremely active phase of life. These changes are allowing people to make use of the vast amount of time available to them to pursue the nearly unlimited opportunities available to them in their retirements. They now have the time to devote to causes and interests that have previously taken a backseat to careers or family obligations.

What is Holding You back from Retirement?
Many people are held back from transitioning into retirement because they do not fully know or understand what retirement is and can be. They do not realize the vast potential that awaits them in their retirement. These myths and misconceptions around retirement cause many people to experience certain challenges, emotional issues, and fears when it comes to their retirement. In this episode you will: Identify the challenges you will face leading up to your retirement, and in your retirement. Understand how those challenges can hold you back. Develop ways of mitigating and even conquering those challenges. Go beyond the financial issues touted by the financial industry. Identify the major deep-seated emotional issues and fears people are too embarrassed to talk about – but that keep more people from either retiring or enjoying their retirements. What is my identity? Exercise As with our values, we maintain certain core identities throughout our lives. As we progress along our life’s path many of our overlaying values and identities shift and evolve. We all will agree that with the passage of time our age, physical, and ability identities change. Examining the various identities which make up your whole self, how do you see these separate facets of who you are? What are your different identities? As you go through this list think about how each of these define you and how you view each of them. For example: What does ‘Age’ mean to you and how do you see your age in respect to the other identities which comprise who you are? List and explain how they each define you and how they each influence your life. Age Identity – How ‘old’ or ‘young’ do you see yourself? Do you see others of the same age in the same light? Relational Identity – Father, Mother, husband, wife, grandparent, sister, brother, friend, lover, drinking buddy, reading partner, confidant… Professional Identity – Job title, professional rank, business owner, manager, teacher, lawyer, truck driver, nurse, VP – Strategic Planning… Ability Identity – The ‘go to’ person, Jack of all trades, Expert in my field… Socioeconomic Identity – Middle class, upper middle-class, High net worth, Ultra-high net worth, Blue collar, White collar, Professional… Spiritual Identity – Faith-based life, Christian, Jewish, Attend religious services twice a year, non-religious spiritual, atheist, agnostic… Gender Identity – Male, Female, Straight, LGBTQ+… Financial Identity – Abundance, Freedom, Independent, Stable, High net worth, Ultra-high net worth, Comfortable… Class Identity – Your class identity and how it is linked to your individual interests, tastes, attitudes, and dispositions… National Identity – Citizenship, birth country, ancestral heritage, political ideology… Physical Identity – Physical features and your view of your physical self… Race, Ethnicity, and Culture Identity – Beyond nationality, ethnicity, religion, social class, generation, locality or any kind of social group that has its own distinct culture… Regional Identity – Each country has its own ‘National’ identity and many times each region of a country may have its own distinct identity. From religious and political views, to language and diction, to food and customs. What is your regional identity? The study of identity is extremely interesting and complicated. It is simultaneously imaginary, yet very real, consciously created but subconsciously performed. Identity is a big part of our lives, but it's hard to define and sometimes harder to explain. Identity is also something that blends our current experiences with cultural memory, or the ways that we choose to remember events and people. Many times we struggle with finding our own identity because we are too close. Understanding our identity and who we are can be extremely frustrating when attempted alone. Often an outside observer who is trained to step outside the box and examine the situation objectively is what is called for. 'Old' Retirement versus NEW Retirement
Over the last ten years retirement has changed. It is no longer a lifestyle of leisure and idle busyness, it is an active lifestyle of vibrancy and living life to its very fullest! The ‘new’ retirement is not an ending, it is a new beginning! The new retirement can be the start of an entirely new life journey. A journey of unlimited potential for everyone who chooses to pursue it. We can all remember when retirement meant surviving the office politics, downsizings, and what-have-you until the person was 65. It is was on that day they cleaned out their desk, everyone in the office threw a retirement party for them, and they were ushered out the door. The expectation then was that the person would have already sold their house and by the weekend would be on their way to a condo in Florida or somewhere else equally sunny. If family and friends wanted to see them, they would have to make the trip there. Sadly, after a few short years, the person was no longer there and were slowly forgotten by all but their closest family members. In today’s retirement people are not waiting until they turn sixty-five to make the leap from a career they may have lost all interest in. They are also not selling their home and moving five to eight states away. If they do choose to sell, they usually don’t move more than fifty miles from where they have been living! Family, friends, local support networks, familiar shopping, services, and religious organizations are all reasons they list for staying put and retiring where they have been living. For the person who retires today, the choices before them are nearly unlimited as to how and when they choose to retire, the lifestyles they choose to lead, and the activities they choose to pursue. If you would to get a deeper understanding of the differences between the ‘Old’ version of our parents retirement and today’s ‘New’ retirement or making the shift into retirement, please reach out to me at Myles@EmpoweredTransitions.com. You are not retiring from something, you are retiring TO something!
What you have been doing for the last thirty or forty years is what you have been doing! It does not have to continue to be what you do when you retire! You control whatever life you choose to retire to. With proper planning and preparation, you can dictate how that transformation takes place and on whatever timeline you choose. But always remember that it is not, NOT, what you are retiring from, but what you are retiring TO!

Retiring Well Is About More Than Just A Number at the Bottom of Your Financial Statement
While it is extremely important to make sure you are financially prepared for your retirement, preparing for the lifestyle, emotional issues, and lifestyle changes which accompany retirement is equally important! Sadly though, less than one out of every three retirement aged individuals say they have given any serious thought to their actual retirement. So how prepared is the average person for their retirement and making the transition into their retirement? Sadly, the percentage of people who have fully prepared themselves for retirement, the changes in their lifestyle, and the emotional aspects of retirement is in the single digits. What plans do you have in place to combat these and the other emotional issues you are very likely to encounter in retirement? Retirement in the Post-Coronavirus Covid19 World
Currently, with the Covid-19 Coronavirus having disrupted our daily lives, retirement may seem a bit of an ‘over the horizon’ thing. For the person who will take the time to develop a solid plan, retirement remains as attainable as it was two or three months ago. In fact, for the person who can see beyond the current anxiety, retirement can be a time to get out of their existing situation and explore some of the new possibilities that are going to developing as the current circumstances improve. Today, as was the case two or three months ago, you have the whole world ahead of you to fully explore, and open to you in so many ways that were never available while you nurtured and grew your current career. Traditional Retirement Planning has it all backwards
Your financial planner or wealth management professional is invaluable - to a point. They do not help you plan for what you are going to do or how you will live your life in retirement - that is where I could in: I help people figure out what they want to do when they retire and then how they will make that happen! Plan for Your Retirement Instead of Just Letting it ‘Happen’!
Instead of taking an ‘I’ll figure it out when that time comes’ mindset - plan and prepare for your retirement. Understand what you are going to retire TO, not from, and WHY you are making the change in lifestyles. If you just sit back and ‘let it happen’, that is the life in retirement that you will get: one that just happens. Most people put more planning and preparation into their annual vacations (and especially so a daughter’s wedding) than they do their retirement - don’t be one of these people. Email: Myles@empoweredtransitions.com https://empoweredtransitions.com Plan, prepare, and exert some energy into living a meaning and fulfilling retirement.
