We are joined this week by Gillian Burt, Executive Director of Project Canoe. Project Canoe is a charitable organization that provides less fortunate youth with the opportunity to experience wilderness canoe trips in northern Ontario each summer. Founded in 1977, Project Canoe has been using the wilderness travel to instil confidence and a sense of meaning among youth for over 40 years! Episode 11 features Pete Marshall, the Communications Director for the Friends of the Boundary Waters Wilderness. Pete joins us to chat about why this area should be on every canoeists bucketlist - we discuss the areas controversial history, famous canoe routes, and some of the different regions that can be found in the park. Pete also walks us through a major threat to the wilderness area, a proposed copper-sulfide mine. On Episode 10 of Under the Yoke we had the pleasure of speaking with brothers, Kyle and Tom, from The Weight We Carry. Fueled by their motivation to help individuals living in impoverished areas of the world and their burning desire for adventure, Kyle and Tom set off to each carry a canoe to the top of Mt. Everest basecamp to raise awareness towards mental health. Their objective was to raise $150,000 in an effort to construct the Women’s Mental Health Center in Kathmundu, Nepal.  This episode seeks to illuminate their trials and tribulations, as well as showcase the brother’s extreme determination and strength throughout this amazing journey to the top of the world. This week we had the pleasure of speaking with Jon from Backcountry Custom Canoes. Through Jon’s background in Forestry, his ongoing passion for the outdoors stemming from his childhood and his relentless work ethic, Jon is crafting beautiful custom (artisan) skin on frame canoes.    Skin on frame canoes is an art dating back thousands of years. On Episode 5 of UTY, we are joined by Tierney Angus - Vice President of Friends of Temagami. We discuss the Temagami region and how it differs from other areas across Ontario and Canada. Composed of over 15 provincial parks, Tierney describes why the region is a great place to put your paddling and navigational skills to the test over its rugged terrain. As beautiful as the region is, it is currently under threat. Tierney breaks down the situation with the Solace Wildlands and walks us through the great work the Friends of Temagami are doing to try and prevent irreversible damage to this pristine wilderness area. In this weeks' episode we speak with Kendra from Camping with Strangers, an organization that enables you to explore the back country on a 1, 2 or 3 day camping trip amongst other like minded individuals.   Kendra started camping with people she found on local Facebook groups. After some time she realized that there must be a way to better screen individuals coming on her trips and make sure everything is planned properly.   Sometimes it’s tough to find other friends to go on a camping trip with, especially when you don’t have the gear or planning skills.
