In some good news for Las Vegas, Caesar’s Media Room reports that the final resort on the Strip re-opened on October 29, The Cromwell. The Cromwell is the first adults-only Strip hotel and casino. Food Network celebrity chef Giada DiLaurentiis’ restaurant on the property, “Giada,” is open to guests of all ages. And in some disappointing news for Las Vegas, according to kxnt radio, the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority has announced that the New Year’s Eve fireworks show on the Strip has been canceled. However, according to Fox 5 in Las Vegas, the Plaza downtown will hold their own fireworks show. The fireworks will be launched from the roof of the hotel, which says the show should be visible around the city. ABC News reports that 90% of casinos in the United States have re-opened, but the capacity restrictions and lowered demand due to COVID-19 have taken a tremendous financial toll on their operations. The industry is expressing a need for governmental relief in the form of tax and regulation breaks. Casinos are also requesting protection from liability in the case of an outbreak on their properties. The Press of Atlantic City is reporting that the State of New Jersey has been billed $1.78 million for legal services provided by a law firm dismissed by governor Phil Murphy in 2018. The firm is reported to have provided advice on “the financial stabilization and recovery” of Atlantic City. The invoices are currently under review by the State and have not yet been paid. The City Pulse is reporting that Caesar’s Entertainment is giving back to the local community in Atlantic City. Recipients include first responder organizations, the local food bank, and the Boys and Girls Club. Events are planned throughout the holiday season from October through December in honor of the efforts of the nonprofit community of Atlantic City. The Global Gaming Expo was held on October 26th, and the American Gaming Association gave their annual State of the Industry presentation. President and CEO Bill Miller remains optimistic about the future of gaming. Miller is quoted by americangaming.org as saying, “As gaming has grown from two states in 1978 to 44 states today, more and more Americans have gotten to know us…They recognize the positive impact we deliver: The jobs we support; the small businesses we sustain; and the tax revenue we contribute…These are the reasons Americans have embraced gaming and they will fuel gaming’s recovery.” Caesar’s Media Room is reporting that Caesar’s Entertainment and William Hill are becoming a sports betting partner with the Indianapolis Colts. Caesar’s will offer a “Pick 6 Predictor” game on the official app for the Colts. This will be the first NFL sponsorship for Caesar’s and William Hill. And casino.org is reporting that WynnBet has announced a partnership with NASCAR and their application to the State of Virginia to become a legal sports betting operator in the state. The Virginia State Legislator approved a bill to legalize sports betting and will have up to 12 licenses to grant to casino applicants by years’ end. And finally, in Canada, Global News reports that ABC Lottery Corporation Casino in Richmond, British Columbia “violated anti-money laundering rules for several years.” And Great Canadian Gaming’s River Rock casino under-reported suspicious transactions. They failed to report any suspicious transactions under $50,000, a regulatory violation. The casinos are represented by attorneys and the case is currently in hearings. Casino News Podcast 6 from Ultimate Casino Updates
Macau Skyline Your casino news podcast is here! Welcome to the sixth podcast on Ultimate Casino Updates! Thank you to all of your for your support of this casino news podcast. I’m providing the transcript below for the hearing impaired, as well as links to the media sources I wish to credit with the news this episode. Podcast transcript: Hi, this is Heather Anne, and welcome to my podcast on casino travel news! On this show, I’ll give you all the latest updates on what’s happening in the world of casino gaming. I’ll also chime in with commentary and opinion from time to time. If you enjoy the podcast, please remember to subscribe and share! In some great news for Atlantic City, the Associated Press is reporting that live poker will be returning to the city soon, starting with the Borgata on October 21. At the Borgata, the number of tables will be reduced to 30 from 80, and clear barriers will be installed to implement social distancing. Cleaning measures will also be ramped up, hand sanitizer will be readily available to customers, masks will be required, and spectators will not be permitted. In more good news for New Jersey, the Associate Press reports that the state broke its sports betting record, that was shattered in August, yet again. $748 million dollars in bets were active in September, compared to $668 million in August. The Las Vegas Sun is reporting that Caesar’s Entertainment will reinstate parking charges in their garages on the Strip on October 30. Platinum tier level and higher guests will continue to be exempt from the parking charges, as will registered hotel guests and Nevada residents with valid ID. CDC Gaming Reports is indicating that Mohegan Sun has been granted initial approval for a Las Vegas casino. The Nevada Gaming Control Board voted unanimously in support of Mohegan Sun’s first Strip casino. The tribe will be the first to operate a casino on the Las Vegas Strip. The casino is expected to open January 15. In Nevada, the Las Vegas sun is reporting that the American Gaming Association is warning that a federal coronavirus relief package for the casino industry is not expected in the near future. They blame the political impasse in the House and Senate for the lack of relief. As for my opinion, I’m appalled by the lack of action in Congress in providing additional relief, both in the form of money for struggling businesses and a second stimulus check for individuals. It’s time for these rich, entitled figureheads in Congress to get off their high horses and exercise some basic empathy towards people that aren’t uber-wealthy like they are. Also in Nevada, CDC Gaming Reports says that Fitch Ratings is advising that while the casino industry is on the rebound across the country, the same is not true of Las Vegas. With 150,000 hotel rooms to book, Las Vegas relies heavily on convention business, and its more remote location depends on reliable flights. CDC Gaming quotes Fitch analysts as saying “A full recovery to pre-pandemic levels is not expected until 2024. The Las Vegas Strip will experience the slowest recovery relative to other major gaming markets and segments globally.” According to KOLN, Nebraska will be voting on legalized gambling next month. Voters will decide on three initiatives. The first would amend the state constitution to allow “games of chance at licensed horse tracks.” The second would establish a gaming commission in the state. And the third involves gaming-related taxes. I want to wish my Nebraska listeners the best of luck in getting this passed! Now for some good news from Canada. Casinos have been given approval to open from the province, if they agree to health measures in response to the coronavirus problem. Casinos that have opened this month include Gateway Casinos and Caesar’s Windsor. All casinos are restricting the number of visitors, requiring masks, and taking cleaning and social distancing measures. Guests at Caesar’s continue to be limited to people who have received an invitation and reserved in advance. Around the world, macaobusiness.com has posted an opinion piece suggesting that there’s new hope of a comeback for the economy in Macao. The business environment in Macao is diversifying, including a greater focus on cultural and business tourism rather than casino tourism, which is viewed as unsustainable after the events of this year, at least in the near future. Ultimate Casino Updates Podcast 5
Casino Blackjack Welcome to Episode 5! Glad to have you here for Episode 5 of the Ultimate Casino Updates Podcast! From here on out, podcasts will be released bi-weekly on Fridays. As my listener base increases, I’ll consider increasing my uploads to weekly. Also from here on out, I’m going to provide a transcript here on the blog to assist the hearing impaired and those who prefer written content. Thank you for listening! As you probably noticed, I have had to change the release day for podcasts from Wednesdays to Fridays, bi-weekly. As my listener base increases, I hope to begin podcasting weekly. First, In the United States, In Nevada, the Las Vegas Sun is reporting that Planet Hollywood will reopen on October 8. The reopening will include many dining venues and the spa in addition to the gaming floor. Planet Hollywood has been closed since March due to coronavirus. Meanwhile, the Las Vegas Sun is also reporting that Caesar’s Entertainment has completed their purchase of William Hill Bookmaker for 3.7 billion dollars. Caesar’s will be retaining William Hill’s United States assets and selling foreign assets. The Las Vegas Sun reports that reports from the Nevada Gaming Control Board show a decrease gaming business of 22% in August compared to August of last year. While most casinos in Las Vegas are now open or opening in the immediate future, convention business, entertainment offerings, and flights into the city are still greatly impacted by the coronavirus. Meanwhile in Atlantic City, The Press of Atlantic City is reporting that even though nine casinos in the city have reopened, many of their staff are still on furlough. The total of employed people was 22,352, down by 6,233 from the same time last year. That adds up to a 21% decrease. Unsurprisingly, state restrictions and lowered demand due to coronavirus are cited as the cause. Alternative job positions on the property have been offered to some employees who are not yet needed to return to work in their previous positions. The Press of Atlantic City also posted an article informing that although most table games are back in action in the city, poker is still on hold, unlike some other locations that have re-opened poker with strict protocols. The Press quotes Steve Callender, regional president of Caesar’s Entertainment, as saying “Poker is tough… it’s a challenge. I wouldn’t venture to say when we’re going to see poker come back.” He cites two issues stalling the return of poker: the low profitability compared to other casino offerings, and the need for complex measures to control spread of the virus in this context. But poker does serve a marketing purpose and draw people to the casino, so it’s eventual return is, thankfully, inevitable. World Casino News is reporting that Bookmaker Five Dimes has settled with the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. Five Dimes agreed to forfeit about 46 million dollars in controversial assets, and will not be required to disclose customer information. Now for my opinion – legal sports betting across the United States is long overdue. People are already going to do it, so why not regulate it? There’s no harm in allowing people to enjoy the entertainment of sports betting. There IS potential harm in not allowing it, forcing people underground to deal with potentially unscrupulous sources. I don’t believe the government has any business telling people they can’t bet on sports, and it should be legalized nationwide immediately. Now for some news from Canada. CBC is reporting that Caesar’s Windsor will re-open under Level 3 requirements on October 8. Slot machines will be the only option for visitors; no other games or venues will be operational. There will be a limit of 50 by-invitation-only guests. I have confirmation from one such invited guest that invitations are being extended via the Caesar’s Rewards app. The company has announced that e-mail invitations will be sent, and that advance reservation is required. Masks and physical distancing will be enforced, and cleaning protocol will be enhanced. Also in Canada, the Guardian states that police in Ontario have seized millions in assets and arrested 29 people after discovering a black market gambling operation in a mansion north of Toronto. Firearms, cash, and liquor were also confiscated. York Police are investigating the potential connection to organized crime. That’s all for this installment of Ultimate Casino Updates!
