The Cons of Lou Pearlman
If you were a teenage girl in the 90s and early 2000s, chances are Lou Pearlman had a significant impact on your life. He was the mastermind behind the boy band craze of that time period, including the person who put together both NSYNC and The Backstreet Boys. But what you may not know was that Lou Pearlman spent his entire life conning every person he ever came into contact with, including the bands. The Rafay Family Murders Part 2
Part 2 of the Rafay Family Murders. Part 1 ended with Sebastian and Atif unknowingly under surveillance in Canada. The Canadian Royal Mounted Police realized they had one choice if they were going to get Sebastian and Atif for the murders of Sultana, Tariq, and Basma Rafay: a police tactic so controversial it's outlawed in both the UK and the US: the Mr. Big Technique. The Rafay Family Murders Part 1
It was July 13, 1993. Just after 2 AM, a call came into 911 from a residence in the Somerset area of Bellevue, Washington asking for an ambulance. The caller said there'd been some type of break in, and that he thought his friend's parents were dead. The caller was 19 year old Sebastian Burns, and the friend he mentioned was 18 year old Atif Rafay. They’d been best friends since high school, and he and Sebastian were visiting his parents in Bellevue during the summer break. They’d been there for 5 days when this happened. They came home that night to find Atif's entire family murdered. A triple murder is not something often seen in Bellevue, and tips started pouring in from law enforcement agencies suggesting the murder might have been committed by religious extremists. But investigators only had eyes for Sebastian and Atif. This episode is sponsored by: Better Help If you want to live a more empowered life, therapy can get you there. The Murder of Connie Dabate
It was two days before Christmas, 2015, when tragedy struck the Dabate house. Police were called to the scene to find 39 year old Rick Dabate lying on the floor in the kitchen, zip tied to a folding chair, surrounded by blood smears but alive. His wife Connie wasn't so lucky. Her body was found in the basement, killed by two gunshot wounds. Rick was able to tell police that this had all been the work of a masked intruder. He hadn't been able to get a good look at the intruder's face, and the only description police had to go on was that the intruder had a voice like Vin Diesel.  This episode is sponsored by: Better Help If you want to live a more empowered life, therapy can get you there. The Austin Servant Girl Murders
December 30, 1884 was the beginning of a nightmare in Austin, Texas when 25 year old Mollie Smith was murdered in the middle of the night, in her bed by an unknown intruder. Over the next 12 months, there would be 7 more murders almost exactly like it. All in the middle of the night, all shockingly violent. This was completely unprecedented, and quite possibly the first serial killer in the United States. The Case of Clark Rockefeller
Sandra Boss was figuratively and literally a Boss. She had an undergraduate degree from Stanford, an MBA from Harvard, and now worked as an executive in New York City making $2 million dollars a year. She was respected. She was brilliant. And she was in love. Lucky for her, that love just so happened to be with a Clark Rockefeller, yes of those Rockefellers: one of the most iconic names in American history. So what if he didn't have a penny to his name? So what if he didn't have any form of identification? One friend even jokingly asked Sandra "How do you know he's really Clark Rockefeller and not some ax murderer on the lam?" Sandra insisted she knew him best, but it would turn out that her friend wasn't so far off from the truth. The Murder of Halee Rathgeber
Halee Rathgeber was a 20 year old student studying to be a nurse at the University of Southern Indiana when she was found murdered in the parking lot of a soccer field. She'd been shot in the back of the head, seemingly by someone she knew. Two suspects emerged: one a convicted rapist who might have known that Halee had information that could put him in prison for a long time. The other suspect was one of her best friends who just didn't seem like the type of person capable of something like this. It was November 2, 2016 when 34 year old married mother of two, Sherri Papini, disappeared. Her husband Keith arrived home to find her missing, and the only trace of her was her cell phone lying in the ground about a mile away from their house with her headphones and several of her blond hairs lying on top. The Case Against Ryan Ferguson
On the night of Halloween, 2001, Kent Heitholt, was murdered. A witness was able to create a composite sketch with police and in late 2003, the Columbia Tribune ran an article on the murder and included the composite sketch. A young man named Charles Erickson saw that sketch and thought he recognized the person. He thought it looked a lot like himself. The problem was, Charles could not remember the night of Halloween 2001. He'd blacked out, and all he knew was that he'd been at a bar near the crime scene. Charles became obsessed with this case, convinced that he was involved in the murder. And if he was involved, then so was the guy that had given him a ride home that night: his friend, Ryan Ferguson. Marc Schiller thought he had normal people problems. The pump on his swimming pool was broken. His Schlotzky’s franchise was failing and he was trying to sell it. He was worried he wouldn’t get through his work as a CPA in time to take his wife and kids to Columbia to celebrate Hanukkah. A tropical storm had been threatening to come into Miami, where he lived. The Case Against Richard Glossip
It's our 100th episode!!!! For this very special episode, we are re-doing episode 1 - the Questionable Case of Richard Glossip. Kristin tells Mogab the story of Richard Glossip, who is on death row in Oklahoma for hiring Justin Sneed to kill his boss, Barry Van Treese. His conviction Is based almost solely on Sneed's word, with no good evidence connecting him to this crime. How did the word of an accomplice carry enough weight to secure a death penalty conviction? So much has happened with this case, so much new information has been uncovered, so we are so excited to be re-doing this episode (Mogab double checked that she was not recording through her air pods this time!) The Watcher
It's SPOOOOKY season, y'all! I've been saving this one up for our Halloween episode, and Mogab was thoroughly creeped out so job well done! It was June of 2014, and Derek and Maria Broaddus were living the American dream: they had just closed on their dream home at 657 Boulevard in Westfield, New Jersey for $1.4 million. They loved everything about this house, and couldn’t wait to move in with their 3 young kids. But their dream became their nightmare when anonymous, threatening letters started showing up at the house, signed by someone calling themselves "The Watcher." The Watcher said it was their job - nay, their OBSESSION - to watch 657 Boulevard, just as their father did before them, and their grandfather before that. The Watcher referred to their kids as "young blood" and asked if they'd discovered what was hidden in the walls. And there was nothing the Broadduses could do to stop the letters from coming. The Fraud of Rita Crundwell
Rita Crundwell was living the high life. In 2011, she was a big deal on the quarter horse circuit; she had 52 world championships under her belt, and ran one of the best known quarter horse breeding operations in the country. She was incredibly successful, and it showed. She owned multiple homes, multiple cars. She had a $2 million dollar motor coach she used to take her to her horse competitions, and a $250,000 horse trailer to tow the horses. She was living a life of luxury, with her furs and her jewels. She also just so happened to be the treasurer for the small city of Dixon, Illinois. And the city's finances were in much worse shape than hers.
