Ep 93 What to Eat During Chemotherapy
Dietician Fiona Rowell has always had excellent ideas about food and nutrition for people in various stages of life. But recently, she has had to personally road-test her own resources, as she learned what was the best food for her during her chemotherapy journey. Fiona thought she’d be the last person to get cancer, but it can happen to anyone, and everyone’s journey is different. Chemotherapy reduces small cell growth in the body, killing the cancer, but also causing damage in the mouth and stomach. During her treatment, Fiona felt nauseous, her taste changed, and she was very prone to mouth ulcers. So what do you eat when you have to avoid acidic food, anything scratchy or crunchy, and generally don’t feel like eating? Fiona Rowell is the Treasuring Mothers dietician Show Notes from Fiona – Eating good food during chemotherapy Exercise is hard when you’re tired all the time. However, exercise is also the most powerful when you feel at your absolute worst. It doesn’t need to be much; a little walk around the garden, a walk to the coffee shop with a friend. Whatever you feel you can manage each day, do that. Fiona found herself active in the mornings, but needed to sleep in the afternoons, sometimes up to three hours, and then still nine hours each night. She struggled with guilt about not doing any work, but encouraging friends and family told her to relax. Side effects of chemotherapy are low energy, low appetite, and constipation, which gave Fiona bad gut pain. As well as this cancer itself can make you feel sick and give people taste changes. Fiona concentrated on getting enough calories daily so she didn’t lose weight, and kept her meal portions small. She had frequent meals rather than bigger, larger ones, and sometimes went only a couple of hours between meals. If she didn’t feel like food she had nourishing liquids like smoothies, often with LSA (Linseed, Soy Almond powder, available at the supermarket), or a small amount of fish or chicken in it for protein. She found sweet foods easier to eat than savoury, struggled to eat anything like a quiche, but would make a “healthier option” choice of an almond friand rather than a choc-chip biscuit for instance. Similarly, cold foods were easier to eat for her than hot, so she ate a lot of sandwiches. If someone you know is going through chemotherapy, if you can, make soup, or food for the rest of the family. It makes a world of difference at an otherwise very stressful time. Sadly, Fiona lost her battle to a rare form of liver cancer in early 2020.

Ep. 94 Being Real with Jo Bouris of “Be That”
Jo Bouris is a wife, mum of three,  and self-confessed coffee snob who has been working in radio and  television for the past 15 years on the Sunshine Coast, Brisbane and  Sydney. She’s also the host of the ACC TV talk show, “Be That”.  She talks to Jenny Baxter about the concept behind the show, and some of the deeper issues we all face as mums. Jo Bouris, host of “Be That” The concept of “Be That”–which recently finished its second season–is  to create connection, conversation and change. It aims to bring up life  topics that you generally don’t talk about to girlfriends about over  coffee, but we generally all face. It’s about sharing “the real stories  of individuals who have journeyed through those hardships to find  freedom.” It began around discussions of Be That Woman, and has  progressed into other areas including Be That Man, Be That Marriage and   Be That Family. GUEST: Jo Bouris HOST: Jenny Baxter Show Notes – Being Real with Jo Bouris on “Be That” Jo loves being real, and having deep conversations in the public space, encouraging other women that they’re not alone. In  each episode Jo is joined by a clinical psychologist and two guest  panelists to discuss a particular topic. Viewers can then download  topics for further discussion after each episode. Underneath the  beautiful persona we often don’t address the real stuff. Social media  doesn’t help the pressure to be a “perfect mum”. Comparison is  one of the biggest issues women face these days, especially with social  media. It’s important for us to know what our own strengths are. We’re  also giving so much to our families, but we’re not superwomen. Jo  has learned the hard way that she needs to fill her soul and spirit; a  hard season of early parenthood led to anxiety and panic attacks. She   suffered great fear and anxiety about the future, not being able to keep  them safe, something she had to work through continually. She quotes  Psalm 55:22 “Leave all your care to the fear of the Lord and His grace  will strengthen you” (Jo’s paraphrase). It’s a beautiful reminder for us  to hand over to God those day-to-day cares, and allow Him to sustain  us.
