#11 Building emotional intelligence w/ Dereck Jackson (Part 1)
Welcome to Tot Talk, South Africa’s very first parenting podcast hosted by mother and media personality Redi Tlhabi (@RediTlhabi)!   In this episode, we talk to parenting expert Dereck Jackson, educator, counsellor, author, radio and television talk show guest and a father. For twenty years and more, Dereck has been speaking and training parents and educators on effectively working with and raising children.   On this week’s Tot Talk show, Redi and Dereck discuss:   This podcast will help you to build an emotionally intelligent child who knows how to regulate their emotions and how to respond to the emotions of others in a positive manner.   Why emotional intelligence (EQ)? Twenty-first-century children have the Internet to help them acquire the technical skills that they require to prepare themselves for a successful future, but technical skills are not enough. Interpersonal skills trump the technical any time. EQ is the buzzword today – both for children and adults!   See our full show notes on this topic here: https://www.startstrong.nestle.co.za/building-emotional-intelligence   Have any questions or comments? #7 Building good eating habits w/ Lindiwe Whati (Part 1)
Welcome to Tot Talk, South Africa’s very first parenting podcast hosted by mother and media personality, Redi Tlhabi (@RediTlhabi)!   This week’s episode is all about nutrition. Redi chats to food expert, Lindiwe Whati, who consults as a dietitian at Gknowmix, a private healthcare company underpinned by genetic research. Our expert has a passion to “positively contribute to the health of individuals, groups and communities through research and the development of innovative nutrition solutions.” And this clearly comes to the fore in the show.   On this week’s Tot Talk show, Redi and Lindiwe discuss: You have seen it. They pull their faces at the sight of any food that is green, yellow or red (broccoli, carrots and sweet peppers)! You have also moved to the dark side and considered chips to be a vegetable. (After all, they are also made from potatoes!) Among the grannies, nannies and chommies, you don’t know how to get your child to eat healthily. What is ‘healthy’ these days? Listen to our podcast to learn more about what constitutes good eating habits for a preschooler and how you can get your child to eat healthily. After all, if they can start healthy eating habits at a young age, they will likely grow to be healthy-eating adults.   See our full show notes on this topic here: https://www.startstrong.nestle.co.za/building-good-eating-habits   Have any questions or comments? #6 Developing an active child w/ Lizette van Huyssteen (Part 2)
#6 Developing an active child with Lizette van Huyssteen (Part 2)   In part 1, we explored how to develop an active child and how you as a parent can encourage them to be more active when they reach the three-year-old stage of their life. Children expect to be able to do everything they see their friends do and when they can’t, they become despondent. It is your job as a parent to work on building these skills. We discussed how you can boost your child’s confidence in practising skills they aren’t strong at, so they can become more willing to participate in them. We also discussed how if you as a parent are active and your child sees this, they might be more willing to become an active and competent mover. Lastly, we spoke about the ABCs of raising a competent mover.   On this week’s Tot Talk show, Redi and Lizette discuss: In part 2, we explore ‘movement vocabulary’, which deals with the basic movement skills children need to become competent movers. We unpack the 22 fundamental movement skills that prepare your child to confidently enter into practising any sport. We discuss how long you need to practise these skills with your child, so they can fully develop to become competent movers. We look at how you can act as a parent when your child shies away from physical activity. We also explore how physical activity can help a child suffering from attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and what the benefits are for your child. We furthermore explore what you can do to help your child if they are born prematurely or have low muscle tone.   See our full show notes on this topic here: https://www.startstrong.nestle.co.za/developing-active-child   Have any questions or comments? #4 Building a child with manners w/ Daleen Taylor (Part 2)
In part one, we discussed with Daleen Taylor how you can improve the communication between you and your child, using four very clever characters she developed to help your child understand how to interact with other children, and the manners they should adopt in each situation. She also explained how to approach situations in which your child misbehaves and how to show them it is their actions you are upset by, but not them. We also looked at how to establish manners as a habit in your child, rather than something we force on them.   We looked at how to set up rules and boundaries for your child, and implementing reward systems that show your child your appreciation when they do something right. But most importantly, we looked at how it is okay to let your child experience disappointment and how this will greatly benefit them in the future.   On this week’s Tot Talk show, Redi and Daleen discuss: Today in part two, we look at how you as a parent should implement what Daleen says are her top three manners. You should insist your child says: ‘Please’ and ‘Thank you’. You need to teach them kindness, for example by teaching them how to share with friends. You have to teach them how to be well mannered in social settings (not to challenge you in front of other moms). She also discusses that it is important to give your child age-appropriate chores to do around the house, as this teaches them responsibility and links to the reward system we spoke about in part one. She also talks about how when dealing with a stubborn child, giving them the distraction of choice will help you soothe their protests.   See our full show notes on this topic here: https://www.startstrong.nestle.co.za/building-good-manners   Have any questions or comments? #3 Building a child with manners w/ Daleen Taylor (Part 1)
Welcome to Tot Talk, South Africa’s very first parenting podcast hosted by mother and media personality Redi Tlhabi (@RediTlhabi)!  In this episode, we meet the founder of Manners4Minors, Daleen Taylor, who has over two decades of experience in teaching children the benefits of good manners, as well as socially acceptable behaviour.   On this week’s Tot Talk show, Redi and Daleen discuss: Daleen will take us through how you can improve the communication between you and your child, using four very clever characters she developed to help your child understand how to interact with other children, and the manners they should adopt in each situation. She will explain how to approach situations in which your child misbehaves and how to show them it is their actions you are upset by, but not them. We will also look at how to establish manners as a habit in your child, rather than something we force on them. We discuss how setting up rules and boundaries is something your child thrives on and can help you establish good manners in them. Implementing a reward system helps your child see when they are doing something right that you appreciate, but also shows them that if they do something bad that goes against the rules you’ve set, there are consequences to those actions and steps must be taken. We also look at how setting goals for your child and reinforcing these goals with rewards show them how to behave and what to do to get a positive response. And lastly, we look at how you need to allow your child to experience disappointment. As unpleasant as that may seem, it provides your child the opportunity to learn this important skill.   See our full show notes on this topic here: https://www.startstrong.nestle.co.za/building-good-manners   Have any questions or comments?
