S2E42: PEMT, Every Cell In Your Body, and MTHFR
If I had to pick one mutation that was AS pivotal as MTHFR is, it would be PEMT. This mutation affects literally EVERY cell in your body - all 37.2 trillion of them. We'll talk about: The one well studied polymorphism (and the legions of other ones) Signs and symptoms that may point to a PEMT problam How to ease the burden on your PEMT And why it's important to love your liver. Enrollment for the Beta group of MTHFR for Life is now open and it's 75% off the usual price. We'll get started on July 11th and spots are limited for the Beta group so enroll now. S2E41: MAO-A Fast and the Carbohydrate Rollercoaster
This week we'll talk about another gene SNP picture that is called MAO-A Fast. Having a fast MAO-A means you break down neurotransmitters faster than average, and since this gene SNP breaks down Serotonin, Melatonin, Norepinephrine, and Epinephrine you can imagine it leads to quite a lot of self-medication, and the easiest way to self-medicate is with Carbs. So we'll talk about: What is happening when you reach for the sugary and starchy carbs How to get off of the carbohydrate rollercoaster What diet is best for you Other things you can do to support healthier neurotransmitter levels. S2E40: MAO-A Slow And The Short Fuse
MAO-A is another gene SNP that is different from the others we've talked about because it is actually linked to a sex chromosome. The various SNPs add up to produce a "fast" or "slow" picture. We'll discuss: Why we can't tell women's MAO-A picture from a genetic report What symptoms to watch for that might indicate you have an MAO-A Slow picture How to manage slow MAO-A naturally Foods to enhance and avoid for slow MAO-A If you'd like to take a look at the complete show notes, they're here. S2E39: Vitamin D, VDR, and MTHFR.
Vitamin D doesn't link into the methylation cycle, the folate cycle, or even the BH4 pathway so it seems highly unrelated to MTHFR, but is that true? This week we'll explore: Why vitamin D seems to do literally everything in the research The gene SNPs that affect vitamin D Why folate and vitamin D have relationship status "complicated" How folate and vitamin D might have influenced skin pigment in evolution An MTHFR superpower that regards, you guessed it, vitamin D. S2E38: Is Low Histamine Actually a Problem?
Low histamine isn't something that doctors are talking about yet. It hasn't even really made it to the internet, which is usually first to know everything. But I think there might be more to low histamine states than meets the eye, so let's talk about it. We'll cover: Emerging research on cancer, cardiac disease, and Alzheimer's disease with low histamine Signs and symptoms of low histamine The Over-methylator/Black sheep basic state tie-in Four natural ways to boost your histamine if it's down. S2E35: Nitric Oxide, MTHFR, and the NOS3 gene SNP.
MTHFR is closely tied to heart disease, and nitric oxide (not to be confused with nitrous oxide, or laughing gas) is a big part of the reason why. In this episode we'll talk about: How nitric oxide is linked to heart attacks, strokes, alzheimers, sinus health, mouth breathing, and even some birth defects. Why humming matters How the NOS3 gene affects you and how it interacts with MTHFR How you can boost your nitric oxide production - with or without these genes. S2E34: B12, MTR, and MTRR
Of course B12 is important to methylation and MTHFR, but why is that precisely? Well, spoiler alert - it has something to do with two different genes that are also involved in the methionine pathway - MTR and MTRR. So this week, let's talk about: Which gene creates especially difficult to treat issues with homocysteine (especially in combo with MTHFR). What to do about MTR and MTRR polymorphisms Why I talk about MTHFR so damn much How to get on the beta list for a teachable course this summer. you can click here for the complete show notes, and here if you really want to be a Genetic Rockstar. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/tohealthwiththat/message

COMT and MTHFR
To kick off our series about other genetic polymorphisms, we're starting with a heavy hitter called COMT. This week we'll talk about: What COMT means, what it does, and why that "M" is so important for MTHFR folks. Why theoretical math on a genetic report might not be as important as your symptoms and personality. What neurotransmitters, hormones, foods, and supplements are affected by this gene SNP. Why geneticists should never be in charge of naming babies. Thanks so much for listening. The complete show notes here here. S2E28: Other Gene SNPs with MTHFR
MTHFR is not the only gene SNP out there - I know, you'd never know that if you listen to this podcast. So let's start a mini-series about other polymorphisms, but first we need to talk about the perils of deep diving into a genetic report. Genes are not very linear, but then what are they and how can we talk about them in a way that makes sense? There is one really big thing that matters a lot more than what gene SNPs are on your genetic report, do you know what it is? Do you know how to work with your genetics if you've never had a genetic report done? Let's discuss this and more. You can find the complete show notes here with links to references and supporting material. You can join an amazing group of MTHFR folks right here in Genetic Rockstars and you can find out more about one-on-one consults with me (Amy) here. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/tohealthwiththat/message

S2E27: What Is Really Going On With MTHFR Basic State?
MTHFR Basic States are an idea that generates a lot of controversy. Some well-respected practitioners don't like to use the idea at all, and some do. So let's talk through Basic States and I'll tell you why I think Basic States are a great concept that is really useful when you're working with MTHFR. We'll talk about Where the idea of basic states came from Why I don't like the terms "undermethylation" and "overmethylation" The risks of paying attention to gene SNPs but not basic state - especially when you aren't working with a practitioner. S2E26: Supplements for Depression with MTHFR
We've talked about so many facets of depression with MTHFR - including the link between MTHFR and neurotransmitter formation, overlooked causes of depression, the mental bad-habit factor, and what to do about those things. What we haven't talked about, are supplements that are MTHFR-safe and also effective. Let's look at three of my favorites. This week we'll talk about: Saffron NAC Rhodiola We'll go over the best times to take them, common doses used in research, and possible mechanisms of action. S2E25: MTHFR Questions From Listeners - Products and Marmite.
Listeners Liana and Tim asked a couple of great questions this week so let's dive into them. Liana asks about specific product suggestions for 5-LMTHF - we'll talk about what to look for, a few of my personal favorites, and companies that I trust. Tim asks about whether there is or isn't folic acid in Marmite and this sent me down a rabbit hole of questions, so we'll talk through the somewhat ambiguous information that is out there on nutritional labels, and what to do with that. Also, how afraid do we need to be of added folic acid? I'll also dive into another great yeast-based food, which is nutritional yeast and what you need to look for there. Thanks so much for listening today and please make sure you're on the email list here because we've got some great programs coming up. Also, if you're interested in the MTHFR community Genetic Rockstars, click here. S2E23: The Risks of UMFA in Pregnancy
Last week we talked about the remarkable results 5-LMTHF produced in couples struggling with infertility relative to high-dose folic acid, which is the standard of care.  This week, let's expand on that by looking at some possible risks of high-dose folic acid to those very same pregnancies. First, let's talk about the actual difference to blood levels between high and low dose pregnant women. Then, a study linking UMFA in certain groups with risks of ASD or autism spectrum disorder. Lastly, a study showing an interesting link between UMFA levels and food allergies. While the research on UMFA in pregnancy is in early days, it still brings up some compelling points to share with your team of practitioners during pregnancy to make sure that you are getting the best supplementation for you.
