60. Jay Johnson - Stepping Outside the Wire - Military Career Lessons
I'm very pleased to have Jay Johnson on Titans of Transition to speak to his career journey and his successful transition from military service to owning and operating J2 Servant Leadership, LLC. He is a motivational speaker, trainer, facilitator, consultant, and coach, who is passionate about helping businesses and individuals achieve extraordinary results in their professional and personal lives. Many things can hold us back from a career transition including fear and insecurity. A repeating theme on this podcast and my coaching is escaping the comfort zone.  When things are going OK or even not great but they are predictable we often get stuck.    Jay Johnson has some great stories and illustrations about how to escape the comfort zone.  At one point in our conversation he talked about " getting outside the wire.  No doubt he heard this term often in the military.  He shares his personal career transition stories and many more lessons in this episode.Recently I attended PodFest, an event for podcasters to exchange ideas, explore technology and network with other in this space. I had the pleasure to meet with several podcasters who were retired from military service. I have great respect for them and their service! It was very interesting to hear their stories which included challenges in finding a new career or focus. More about Jay- Jay is a retired Air Force veteran who has led teams and organizations all over the world. He has vast experience in leadership, process improvement, change management, and training. Jay retired from active duty in 2010 and served for five years as a civil servant working at Randolph AFB in San Antonio, Texas. 58. I Found My New Career in Covid and It's Awesome! - Dan Navarra
Dan Navarra of National Christian Foundation shares how he transitioned from full time pastoral ministry into an adjacent career that he loves. It wasn't a quick change from one to another but rather involved deep introspection, time with God and seeking out trusted mentors for guidance. There were also various pivots which included committing to a storefront lease for his wife's business during  Covid. Their plan assumed it would take "two weeks to flatten the curve" and they would be opened not too long after that. About a year later they finally were able to open and out of the blue received an offer to purchase the business. Did I mention his full-time employment ended a few months before this? Dan was pivoting in various ways through this whole period but in the end, he landed a job that he now truly loves, allows him to serve God as well as have the family time that was so scarce with his previous career. It's an inspiring to hear Dan's journey, the deep lessons he learned and the process he used to transition successfully.   Sometimes it takes change being thrust on us for us to take the leap. That was surely the case here as it has been for many the past few years. Dan can be reached at dnavarra@ncfgiving.comWatch Video VersionSupport the show

45. Steffen Schackinger - Pursue you dream even when it's not the "sensible" thing to do!
This episode was great for me! I've been playing guitar since the 5th grade. It's been more of a hobby and something I have dreamt about doing professionally but it wasn't on my path. I track lots of guitarists and about 8 years ago I came across Steffen. I was blown away by his style, technical ability and composition. There was something very unique and fresh to his music. Shortly after staring Titans of Transition I made a list of people I would love to interview. Steffen was on the list but it took me months before I worked up the courage to ask him. I thought it was a long shot. After all I am quite far away he is in Denmark and I am in the USA. Also I am quite a few years his senior. He graciously accepted.  Thanks Steff! As with all my episodes, I explore Steffen's career and life transitions, from his classical training on violin, cello and piano leading up to his discovery of guitar. He went all in on music and left Gymnasium (High School) to devote more time to his passion and gift-music.Unlike other interviews, I have to admit I geek out a bit with him on guitars, guitar tone and music. Through it all we had a great conversation about transitions, life, music and lessons we have learned along our respective journeys. - Joe MillerThe video version is available HERESteffen's Contact Information:Website  Youtube channel Instagram Facebook Twitter Steffen Schackinger was born right in the centre of Denmark - in the capital of the island Fyn - Odense. He started out on the violin as a kid, and moved on to cello and classical piano. With the classical and electric guitar he finally found his right instrument. At the age of 13 he started out as a band guitarist, and he soon earned a reputation, as an extraordinary guitarist. Steffen completed his education as a rhythmic guitarist at The Carl Nielsen Academy of Music, and the self-released cd with the band GRACELANDS - where Steffen sang the lead vocal and played guitar - got major airplay on the Danish radio stations with the songs "Electrified", "Climbing Into Space" and "Supersonic View".Steffen has been recording countless of records as a session musician, along with being a theatre musician on several occasions. He also found himself in a bowtie playing with Symphony Orchestras as well as representing several guitar- and FX producers at guitar clinics. Steffen started out as very young composer, writing classical songs. Now he is writing pop- and rocksongs as well as instrumental songs. For the past years Steffen has been focusing on ethnic music and been finding inspiration in both Irish folk music an Indian Rhythms. The Indian Sitar and the Bouzouki has been added to the list of instruments he's playing. Steffens guitar playing contains elements from rock/hardrock, blues, jazz/fusion and country. He has found inspiration from several of the major guitar heroes - amongst others: Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler, Jeff Beck, Robben Ford, Joe Satriani, Allan Holdsworth, Frank Gambale, Bill Frisell, Van Halen, George Benson, Eric Johnson, Frank Zappa, Steve Morse, Steve Vai, Pat Metheny, Albert Lee, Paco De Lucia, John Mcloughlin and Larry Carlton. Also, classic music and composers like Bach, Beethoven, Paganini, Stravinsky and not least Stephen Sondheim have had major influence on the musical development of Steffen Schackinger - as a guitarist and as a composer.Support the show

44. Michael Gettel - Transition back to the Studio with The View From Here
Michael returns to the show to update Joe on his latest transition back to the studio to record his first album in more than 20 years. In this new work, “A View From Here”, he continues to combine his compositional and piano artistry to inform powerful scenes he has observed in nature. These Tableaus , as he calls them, can be viewed from the physical or spiritual perspectives. The later provides powerful life lessons and helps us to navigate our journey and transitions. One example of this is “Stepping Stones", that draws from his memories of trips to The Lake District in the United Kingdom with his students. In this beautiful area you can find many places where hand hewn stones have been placed in the bubbling rivers and streams to allow for a safe crossing. In some cases these stone crossing have been in place for hundreds of years. As in life, these stepping stones provide for safe passage but there are times following heavy rains where they are submerged well under water. Crossing during these times can be risky. This is a powerful metaphor for life’s journey for most of us. At times our safe path is obstructed or caries great risk and we have to find another way around. About Michael Raised in Evergreen, Colorado, Michael Gettel began pursuing his musical interests on piano and trumpet at an early age. He graduated with honors through the School of Music from The University of Northern Colorado, and later became a Klingenstein Fellow at Columbia University in New York City. 43. Payne Schoen - Navigating change, dealing with Imposter Syndrome and fear of being found out.
Joe is joined by Payne Schoen, CPA and founder of Payne Schoen Consulting. Payne helps high achievers and senior leaders create environments conducive to their individual and teams success. He works with his clients in a 1-on-1 coaching relationship to raise their level of awareness by thinking deeper into their challenges, limiting beliefs, and opportunities. During the course of this interview it is clear why Payne is focused in this area. Payne shares several stories which underscore how he and we can doubt ourselves and how these doubts are based on inaccurate and habitual thinking. In our careers we can often feel like imposters and any successes we have along the we tend to discount. In his recent live coaching session with the John C. Maxwell Team Faculty on stage at the International Maxwell Certification event in Orlando, faculty member Valorie Burton stated, " Your doubts are not the product of accurate thinking, but habitual thinking". During this interview we discuss how we can come to believe that if the work we do isn't hard and we don't put in an enormous level of effort it can't be valuable. We completely discount the importance of the end results an focus on the effort or the activity itself. Another point that came out is that when we operate in the area of our natural gifting and abilities positive results come more easily. This is often a good way to determine if one is in the right role, or the best position. Operating in your natural strength is of huge importance to success in career and life. It applies in all areas. Payne and I discuss his journey playing football in high school and college which also illustrates this point powerfully. There are powerful lessons here for navigating change, enjoy!
