Change is the only thing you know for certain in business.  Everything is constantly shifting and you have to be keenly aware of those changes if you’re going to succeed.  Take office space for example. For decades we have been installing glass in some of the biggest offices in the country.  But that industry is in the midst of some serious disruption. The rise of the gig economy means there's are literally hundreds of thousands of people who need office space.  It would be way too expensive for each person to rent on their own. That’s where co-working comes in. These ad hoc office spaces are now in every major city on the planet. It’s hard to make an impression these days. Everyone is overwhelmed with information. That makes it really difficult for a company to break through all the clutter. The question is how do you do that in a Google world? I’ll tell you what won’t work: talking about price. In almost every industry competitors prices are really close to one another. It doesn’t mean anything anymore. To break through you have to make real connections with your customers. That means working late, following up with phone calls and taking as many meeting as you possibly can. It’s a popularity contest so you have to be ready to turn on the charm I’m joined today by Ephraim Spigelman, Vice-President of Sales and Marketing at Enercare Connections. Enercare is the largest non-utility provider of sub-meter electricity in the country. He joins me to talk about how to distinguish yourself in a cluttered world.

I have a confession to make.  It’s not all about me. “You’re never going to survive”.  Those were the words of encouragement I received at the young age of 20 years old.   I was broke. Like broke, broke. I had just recently left my Dad’s company to strike out on my own.  And things weren’t going well. I was on a job site early in the morning when a colleague of my Dad sidled up beside me.   “Tim,” he said.  “You’re an idiot and you’re never going to survive.”  I’d like to tell you that I told him to shove it but I didn’t.  I went back to my car and burst into tears. I've seen huge growth year over year. I’m incredibly fortunate but that growth comes at a cost. Any business that encounters explosive growth can begin to outgrow their cash flow. My rule of thumb is that once you start growing above 20% you run a real risk of hitting a sh crunch. Most sole proprietors make up for that deficit by cutting their own paycheque. I think government is terrible at managing the economy. Despite politicians constantly rattling on about how many jobs they created the truth is they don’t. Businesses create jobs. As far as I’m concerned government should just get out of the way. Every time they try to interfere in the economy the results are underwhelming at best or straight-up catastrophic at worst. I’m joined once again this week by the mayor of Barrie, Ontario. Jeff Lehman doesn’t agree with me about everything. But we do get into a really powerful discussion about the proper role of government in the economy.
