101// Are You Eating The Same Foods and Gaining Weight?
Recipe (Thyroid friendly iodine): Seaweed Sushi Bowl   Serves 2   1 cup cooked rice 1 avocado (thinly sliced) ½ cucumber (diced) ½ red pepper (thinly sliced) 1 green onion (chopped) 2 tablespoons dried seaweed (arame, wakame, or crumbled nori sheets) 2 tablespoons sesame seeds 3 tablespoons rice vinegar 3 tablespoons gluten-free tamari sauce 1 tablespoon lemon juice 1 tablespoon sesame oil ½ garlic clove dash salt and pepper   Split the first seven ingredients into two bowls.   Mix the rest of the ingredients together to make the dressing.   Pour the dressing over the sushi bowls.   Serve & Enjoy!   Tip:  This is a great lunch to take on the go.  Keep dressing in a separate container so you can give it a shake before adding it onto the sushi bowl.   . . . . Welcome back to the thriving thyroid podcast, where we choose to become empowered patients and take our health into our own hands. Hi, I'm Shannon Hanson, a Christian entrepreneur, a mom of three. Welcome to the thriving thyroid podcast, (01:32): Right? You guys welcome back. So I'm back. So , it's been a while. I took a vacation with my family to Mexico and it was beautiful and amazing and everything I wanted and more, and it was actually really, really good timing for me. I've been feeling a lot of feelings lately. Some of this I know as postpartum my emotions around six months start to go a little, a little wonky, and you're kind of settling in to the new routine. And I found for myself, it's like all of the adrenaline starts to kind of wear off and things start to settle in. People are still helpful, but not as helpful as maybe they once were when you first had a brand new baby and life can just start to like it changes. I, I don't wanna be even wanna say it's overwhelming because it's not overwhelming. (02:39): It just changes anyways. And then there's been a few things in my business that I'm like, I don't know what to do. I don't know how to handle this. I don't know the direction or the path that I need to be going. And I've really been praying for inspiration and guidance. And I know that God Heley father does not always just hit you over the head with this like profound answer. Usually it's like you, you have to take action and move forward and then begin to discover, Hey, this is, this is a really good choice. Or, Hey, this isn't a good choice. And I I've had an experience lately and I'm not gonna go into the details that other people made choices that affected my business and I've been holding onto some resentment, some hurt, some anger, some frustration. And so anyways, long story short, going to Mexico was perfect and relaxing and allowed me to kind of clear my head and what I think has helped me move forward in a more positive direction and in a way that is also really, really supportive to myself to my family. (04:16): And I think is, is also going to really benefit you guys long term . So I'm not ready to disclose all of the details yet, but the one thing I wanna tell you guys, especially you podcast listeners, we are going to start doing, I don't know, units series segments, where I'm talking about the same topic, but talking about it in a lot of different ways. Maybe diving a little bit deeper into things. It's not gonna be like a part one part two. Maybe some of it will be , but for summer there, this is happening both in the membership coaching program and also inside the Hanon method where people are like, I've lost, you know, 20 pounds, I've lost 30 pounds. I'm starting to feel good, but I've kind of hit this plateau, which is what I've maybe hit in the past. And I just can't overcome this plateau, or I always get to this point and then something happens and I start gaining weight again or whatever. (05:25): And so, and summertime, I think anytime we are in bathing suits or in less clothing, it brings up a lot of feelings and insecurities about our body. And it just kind of brings it to the forefront because we can't hide behind big baggy sweatshirts and sweatpants and sweaters and all the things during, during fall and winter. And it was really interesting today. One of the speakers she spoke about how at church, we, this was at church, she was speaking about how we keep our mind so busy and distracted. And she went into when, you know, when she sits down or whatever it is when she sits down and tries to relax. She's thinking about this exercise routine that she has embarked upon, but it's not really working and she's not feeling comfortable in her body. And you know, when somebody gives her a compliment about, oh, Hey, you look really beautiful. (06:34): She can't accept that compliment because she doesn't feel that way about herself. And these are all of the things. And all of the thoughts that I've been thinking about. Number one for myself, be again, being postpartum. Like my hypothyroidism, my symptoms have flared back up after being in remission for five years. so that's not super fun and that's been very emotional for me and then going to Mexico, being in a bathing suit. And I'm like, oh my gosh, like, things are not the way that they should be. And then couple that with the stress of running a business and all of these different things, I started out heavier than what I wanted to be because of the stress of my business and because of all of these external things. And then as soon as I was like, Hey, okay, I'm gonna, you know, get focused again. (07:30): I'm gonna start eating better. I'm gonna start putting myself on a routine and a regimen to help manage my stress so that my weight goes down. I was pregnant. So a lot of this stuff is not only for you guys as a listener, but also for myself and also for the members that we're working with in inside the membership or in the Hanson method or so on and so forth. Okay. So what I have decided to do, like I said, is we're gonna be talking about weight, weight management, overcoming plateaus, helping you guys to understand maybe some of the steps that you need to take. I have Dawn with me on the episode, something else anyways, I have with me today and we're about this upcoming summit that she has together and I have the opportunity to speak so welcome, Don. (01:46): Thanks. So Shannon, I'm really excited to be able to chat a bit about summit and all that it has for women. (01:51): Yeah. So give us a little bit of background as to who you're and why you decided to do this summit. (02:00): Yeah, so my background really was a very natural background when I had children. So before that, probably not so much, but it's like the moment. Yeah. Kids suddenly you really, really wanna take care of them even better than you take care of yourself. And so with my first child I, I was really, you know, making all her food and looking at cloth diapers and just wanting to be really holistic with her. And that really opened up a whole new world for me. And from that point on I went into the journey of becoming a doula which originally just started with friends and then ended up being a whole business and teaching more natural style childbirth education classes, and then became a breastfeeding consultants for our area. And I really loved the fact that as I got to know women, I saw them also wanting to do things more naturally, which made me feel like I need to stay ahead of them. (02:54): And so I went I went back to school and I became a homeopath as well, which just was just using natural medication to help families. And so I loved all of that and I loved the whole area, but what ended up happening is of course, as, as my kids got older and I got older, it changed kind of the direction of things because I started to see more in the end of mental health and women who are burning out and women who are struggling just to be moms and transitioning from, you know, a working mom to a, a stay at home mom or a stay at home mom to a going back to work mom and all of these areas. And so I guess what really propelled this summit is I did a summit in February that was specifically on mindset and mental health and making sure that you're living your best life and that it's okay to take care of yourself. (03:42): And it's not a bad thing to decide to pull back and be more gentle and take time and, and all of that. And from that summit, I started to hear a lot from women on the health issues that they were dealing with, which often was coming out of stress and overwork and burnout, and even just life transition. And so I thought that is my next summit. I am definitely going to step into a summit. That's gonna talk about women's health physically, mentally, emotionally in a more natural sense. And so I started to put this one together and I'm really, really super excited about it because I feel like it has something for every woman up there. (04:18): Well, and I, so several things, I was the exact same way. I clothed my first two kids. And then they came out with honest company and I was like, I'm going back to you once you kinda hit a certain point. I'm like the amount of laundry that I have. But that was honestly what started me in my journey as well, was my kids. Right. I was doing it for my kids. I wanted to understand these dyes and food and all of these wonderful things. And so I love that part. And then the second part is I feel like, and maybe you can speak into this a little bit. And, and maybe you haven't seen it. I don't know, but I feel like with COVID, a lot of the women have hit more burnout. Mm-Hmm right. They they've got a career, they've got a job, they have kids, they have a house they have, you know, and then they're locked inside their homes and, and all, all of that has just taken a toll on us mentally and emotionally and the stress and the burnout and all of that. So (05:32): Yeah, you totally, totally agree with you. I think, especially like you had women who maybe were, stay at home moms, but suddenly had then stay at home children homeschooling whether they wanted it or not. Right. Or we had women who were working part from home and doing that you know, and just, it was just such a, a forced transition and really not much time to make that transition. Yeah. And I think even for the whole family, right? Like all of a sudden we saw kids having mental health issues, emotional issues that they didn't have pre and moms trying their best to cope with that. And you cannot be a psychologist and a mom, you know what I mean? Like we already have enough roles. Yeah. So I feel like it just, everything that could have come up came up and I think for women, we're still in the transition, we're still re not even, I wouldn't even say recovering. I feel like we're still in it because we're still too close. Right. Mm-hmm so we're still in it. And we're maybe only now recognizing I need some help. Like I need to actually look at me. (06:36): Yes. Yeah. I, I love that. We're still, we're still in recovery and my husband and I joke we're like people have gotten stupid since COVID and , (06:50): And we we're speaking to ourselves, but it's like, some of that

Welcome to the thriving thyroid podcast. (01:29): All right, welcome back. You guys. Oh, I am on a bit of a vulnerability hangover. So if you follow me on Instagram, thriving thyroid, I yesterday recently shared an Instagram story where I talked about I out, I am currently in a place of feeling very loved and very supported. And I don't think that most people know that you could be this happy. So we recently, my husband and I recently celebrated our 13 year anniversary for some of you guys. Yes, we are babies. And for others of you, we, we got married super young. I was 20, he was 21. I got pregnant with my first, very soon after that, I had her right before my 22nd birthday. And we've had ups and downs, I think like most people, but I grew up in a home with a lot of trauma, a lot of uncertainty, a lot of instability. (02:42): And there was a lot of ups and downs. And I did not realize you could be happy that happiness is a choice. I was told things like, well, what could go wrong is gonna go wrong? You know, my dad was quoting Murphy's law and I grew up with a lot of false beliefs around. If something good happens, something equally as bad or worse has to happen. And so I was constantly for the first, I don't know, 10 years, 11 years of our marriage looking for the bad I was looking for the drama. And my husband always laughed at me for the first several years because it was like every springtime. I was like, Hey, let's buy a new house. Hey, let's, you know, look at what the market is doing. We should look at new houses and he is like, why our house is great. (03:39): And our house was great, but I was always trying to create something in my life. Okay. Hopefully, hopefully some of you guys can relate to that. And I've told this story many times before, but this was such a pivotal moment for me, where my husband was like, we were having a disagreement. I wouldn't even say arguing, we're sitting on the bed, we're not yelling and screaming. And I was just like, if you, if you, you need to, you know, kind of digging into him after work. And he just looked at me one day and was like, will you ever be happy? And of course my stubborn self, I was like, well, of course not, I'm never gonna be happy. But really that was a pivotal moment in my life where I set on a mission to change my life, to find happiness, to find joy, because my happiness, my joy is not related to my husband. (04:45): My happiness and joy is not related to my kids or the house that I live in or the car that I drive or any of these external factors, joy and happiness comes from within. And it took me a freaking long time. to find the joy. It took me a long time to feel happy and it didn't happen overnight. And it didn't change instantaneously by reading one book, I have to do the work every single freaking day to get up and make a decision to be happy. And here's where the vulnerability comes in. Okay. I, I hate even saying this, cuz I'm like, this is public for the whole world to see and hear and you know, do what they want with this. And so hopefully you guys know that this is coming from a place of love. And I thought we were done having kids. (05:53): My husband thought we were done having kids. We were very happy with our three little girls and they were pretty close to perfect life was good. We had just built our new dream home. You know, all of these things are starting to take place and I find myself pregnant and I was like, what is going on? right. I question, God, I question God, because I didn't understand his timing here. I was trying to build a business. I have a multiyear business. So I feel like I'm pretty successful, but I'm also building, I'm still builder things in my business that I'm learning every day. I'm learning how to work with clients. I'm learning how to be more proficient in reading testing, I'm taking new classes, I'm hiring coaches. I am still in this building process and things are kind of bumpy, you know? (06:57): And so here I am finding myself pregnant and I know what kind of mom I am and I know what kind of mom I want to be. And I want to be an actively engaged mom in my kids' life. And that my older kids, I felt like they were pretty self-sufficient if they needed me, they could come into the office and they could, you know, Hey mom, I need this or Hey, can we do that or whatever. And you'll see 'em in my Facebook lives and Instagram stories and all the things, cuz they're very much a part of my life. And you will hear them in multiple podcast episodes, right? Like that is nothing new. hopefully nothing new to any of you guys. And so knowing that and knowing, oh my gosh, I'm gonna have this little baby who is going to need me and is going to be dependent upon me. (07:44): I had no clue how I was gonna do it. So that aside, I also knew that after baby number three, that is when my thyroid, my hormones like fell apart. Like there were hormonal issues prior to that. So that was nothing new, but I felt like they were minor. Okay. After baby number three, I'm like six months, nine months postpartum. I'm still at my birth weight. And I'm like, okay, that was my first clue. I couldn't lose weight. I'm still at like 190 pounds. I delivered her at like, I think just under 200. So I, I mean literally like I hadn't lost any weight. I'm puffy, I'm inflamed. I'm tired. I look back at pictures and I don't even recognize myself. Right? Like I'm just kind of a hot mess and my hair is falling out. And that was what led to the conversation with my mom of like, I just don't feel good. (08:47): I don't know what's wrong with me. And my mom's like, Hey, you should go get your thyroid checked. And I was like, haha, you're funny because I was a practitioner and I thought I knew everything. Apparently I didn't. And my husband will tell you when it comes to myself, I forget what I know but so here I was also going into the pregnancy with that trauma and that fear of, oh my gosh, this is gonna happen all over again. How am I gonna do this? How am I gonna run a business now? How am I

It looks like we're live. All right. Welcome everyone. I have Hael on with me. Heather's been in the handsome method for a little while, and I wanted to give you guys just more real life. Examples of success stories, because I think oftentimes when we're dealing with thyroid, when we're dealing with autoimmunity, we think can that happen for me, or that could never happen for me, or we have all these beliefs around it. And so one of my goals with interviewing people and having these conversations is so that you guys can see real life examples of other women struggling with the same things as you and how they have come through it or not come through it. So welcome. Pethel to today's. I don't know, show call. (00:58): Thank you. (01:00): Yeah, absolutely. So give everybody a little bit of background. Who are you, what do you do all of those fun things? (01:08): Well, I am a wife to my husband of almost 21 years, a mother of two boys. And I also work full time in I'm a VP of an industrial company, so it's high, high stress environment. And I study classical homeopathy on the side and kind of venturing into my wellness career path as a hobby. So yeah, that's where I'm at. (01:41): Yeah. Amazing. Well, and I love that you bring this background of homeopathy with you into, into everything that, that we're doing here in the Hanson method. So before joining the Hanson method, what were some of the FA what were the symptoms, what were some of the things that you were struggling with? (02:00): So I would say I've, I've been hypothyroid most of my life probably about 20 years. And that's all I was told you're hypothyroid, and you're gonna be on this pill for the rest of your life. And I started studying a little bit more into health and wellness over the last seven to eight years and kind of sparked questions in me, but I didn't really do anything about them. They were always in the back of my head until last year my cholesterol started spiking and I knew I was eating fairly well. Yeah. And I was like, well, why all of a sudden is my cholesterol going up mainly the triglycerides. And you know, I was told you need cholesterol in your body, but something may not be working in your body to process your cholesterol. So I decided to go to an endocrinologist and she she just felt the gland and she was like, you know what? I think you have Hashimotos, but let's do a test, a confirmatory test. So she did. And I was sad to find out that I have Hashimotos. Yeah. but it didn't stop there. I just kind of was like, okay, I got it now, what am I gonna do about it? What do I need to learn about it? Because obviously the difference with hypo and Hashimotos is one is autoimmune and I autoimmune the word autoimmune scares me. (03:30): Yeah. It, oh, for me, (03:31): Stresses me out. So that's where it kind of led me to you know, look into a holistic style of treatment, cuz I've always been interested in that in my family. There's homeo pads, there's Ibada, but they're all in the east, on the Eastern side of the world. So they're freely able to practice that, but here we're kind of confined to apathy and I wanted to find an alternative. So I started my seeking out of what can I do? What can I do for myself that doesn't require meds for joint pains or, you know, meds for the headaches or, you know, an antidepressant for the anxiety. Like, yeah. I, I didn't wanna be, I knew I didn't wanna go down that route. You know, I'm fairly young still. I like to believe and I have a long way to go and I don't want medicine to kind of dictate my lifestyle going forward. (04:32): Yeah, yeah, absolutely. Oh my goodness. There's so much there. I mean like good things, right. I think so quickly to touch on this for the, the listeners, the Watchers autoimmunity and Hashi or hypothyroidism Hashimoto's hypothyroidism are different. Right. They, they work in the body different. And so like you were saying autoimmunity, when I was struggling with that, I was like, ah, you know, or like, anyways, that's like a whole other story. I've shared it in other things. But when I thought it was Hashimotos, I was freaking out, right. I was very nervous because I knew what that meant for me long term. So that was, you know, all of the stress and feelings with that, but then also having my desire to not take medication and not be on medication for the rest of my life was also kind of pulling at me. And so I think that that is very relatable to, to a lot of people. So you were saying you had joint pain. Were you having headaches? What were like the symptoms that you were having? (05:43): So symptoms? Obviously it was a lot of, it was in the lab test that I was getting with the cholesterol. And then I, I did have brain fog every day at about three o'clock. I'd get a craving for sweets and I would just start yawning at work. I was just exhausted by three o'clock. And I, those were my main ones. There was weight gain. It wasn't crazy weight gain and that, wasn't one of my initial reasons for even seeking help, but I didn't feel good. I didn't feel good in my own skin. Yeah. And I knew something was off my skin was always dry. My lips were always dry. And something was off that Thato thyroxin that they put you on it, it wasn't really working. So then I was like, all right, well, I am Hashimotos so let's, let's kind of dive into this a little bit and see what it means. (06:37): Yeah, yeah, absolutely. So when you came in, you joined our four week program. Yeah. Right. I don't remember when that was (06:47): It was, I joined in March. (06:50): Okay. In March, March (06:51): Of this (06:52): Year. Okay, perfect. I'm glad you remember, cuz I don't I was gonna say like, we were talking about this earlier today and we were like, I think we did one in December, like November, December, and then we did one later in the year and I couldn't, I just couldn't remember anyways. But so you joined there and then you decided to continue your journey with us. So what was kind of that like tipping point for saying, okay, I wanna continue on with this. (07:23): Yeah. So the first four weeks, you know, I, I went in skeptical as everyone does. I'm gonna, I'm gonna invest in something. And I'm gonna invest my time into this too. I kind of saw the website and the program that you have us working on in journaling and all that. And as I got into it for the four weeks and especially the coaching calls, I was like, okay, I'm, I'm not only am I enjoying this, but I'm learning, I'm learning so much more than I would if I were to just Google everything myself. And it was, it was kind of comforting to know that I'm not the only one going through some of these symptoms. Some of my symptoms might be milder than others and s

You wanted to something a little bit different because I've really been feeling like I'm missing a part of who I am in the content that I create for you guys. And this is totally my own thing. I have felt scared to share certain parts of me because I'm like, well, it doesn't have to do with health. And you know, really what it comes down to is fear of judgment. I was fearful and probably still am. about what you guys will think of me as a person versus me as a practitioner and coach, but really one of the big things that I've always envisioned for the thriving thyroid podcast, the thriving thyroid business, the same, the wellness business is really what it is, but the umbrella of the, the thyroid is to have my family included in what I do. (02:34): It is really important for me. Family is really important to me and I am putting myself out there a little bit to feel a little bit more vulnerable because if I want a family business, I have to be the change. And I know for the women that I want to work with and the women that I do work with family is also an essential part of why they want to get better and why they want their body to function. They want to, you know, play with their kids. They want to take them to the park. They want to be a fun Nana or grandma or Mimi or whatever you go by. They want to be able to say yes to their kids in babysitting, and they want to have the energy to get down on the floor and play with them and not be in pain or not have to suffer for days afterwards when their body is like, Nope, right. (03:32): So it's really important for me to bring this element into the business as a whole. So with that being said, there might be a little bit more mommy and mindset and things that I have personally done and that I, that work well for me. And if it works well for you, I hope so. I hope so. Hopefully you guys can always take little nuggets and even if you aren't a mom, I hope you guys listen to this because I'm gonna be sharing with you guys more than just that. Right. I, I was talking to my daughter on the way to taking her to school this morning. And she was telling me this story about a friend's mom and how this mom was really stressed out and overwhelmed. And she was like, mom, I just don't understand why they couldn't have planned better. And I, you know, and that would reduce their stress and all of these different things. (04:28): And I was like, you know what, you're absolutely right. But I have to tell you, I was that mom. I was the straight stressed out, crazy mom yelling at my kids. It was all their fault. When really in actuality it was my fault. I was the one that said yes to too many things. I was the one that was stressed out and I let things get under my skin and pile up, or I would procrastinate so long that it was so much for me to take on. And then I would take it out on the people that I love the most. And let's be real here. It's not my kids' fault. It is not my husband's fault. It is my, my responsibility. And this is where taking that personal ownership and that personal responsibility comes into play, right? That is the number one thing that I believe us women and us people as society can do is to be the first person to raise our hand and say, you know what? (05:30): I made a mistake. I messed up and taking that personal responsibility will lead us to having a more healthy life and feeling more fulfilled in our life. So the biggest strategy that I implemented about five years ago, maybe a little longer, maybe a little shorter, about five years ago, maybe it was, I dunno, anyways was I started saying things like, I would love to do that, but let me check my calendar first. And then I would look at my calendar and I would make sure that it was a good fit for that day because what I ended up doing a lot of times is I would say yes, and then I would go home and realize, oh my gosh, I have five other other things to do. Yes, I could fit that in between this time and that time, but I'm gonna be running around like a chicken with my head off, cut off, and I would be stressed out about it or frustrated and upset with other people because somehow it was their fault when it was mine. (06:42): So that was one of the first strategies that I implemented, the second strategy. And I grew up with a, a family that did this. And so it was a matter of me bringing it back. So my mom, we played this game, white tornado. I have never heard of anybody else playing this game. So if you have played this game or heard of this game before, please send me a DM. I would love to know. . So this white tornado is we would set a timer for 5, 10, 15 minutes, and we would run around the house as fast as we could. And we would clean up all of the things. Now, it was such a short period of time. And even for my kids, it's such a short period of time that they're able to keep their attention. And I, there's always some kind of quote, unquote reward for my kids at afterwards, right? (07:35): Once you get done with this, we can go to the park. Once we get done with, you know, if you work really hard for 10 minutes or 15 minutes, then we can go play outside. Or if you do this for 10 minutes, then we can go on a bike ride. If you do this, then this right. And really kind of instilling that into my kids and letting them know that it is important to get the work done, but it's equally as important to go and have fun and play, right? Play is super good for the kids. And so those two things we have gotten out of the habit since little miss has come along and we

Ben brown is the owner of BSL nutrition and online nutrition and fitness consulting business specializing in designing individualized nutrition, lifestyle and strength training programs. I am so excited to be having this conversation with him as we are gonna be talking about nutrition and fitness and how that relates to just lifestyle and how to use those things to improve energy. All of, all of the things. So Ben welcome. Speaker 3 (03:28): I'm happy to be here. Thank you for having me Shannon. Speaker 2 (03:31): Yeah, absolutely. So give everybody a little bit of background as to who you are, what you do. Speaker 3 (03:38): Yeah, absolutely. So we have a company called BSL nutrition that stands for body systems labs and we are a fitness and nutrition and kind of supplement coaching company. We've got a number of different supplement products, but most importantly is we are a kind of a nutrition driven coaching company and we believe that your health determines your freedom. And so by virtue of that, we wanna give people the tools and the skills and the knowledge to be able to not only reach their health and fitness and lifestyle goals, but also to be able to maintain those for life. And, and so just in terms of background, I have a couple different master's degree, one in exercise physiology, another one in clinical nutrition. And so I I've been involved in, in strength and conditioning for athletes. I've been involved in physical therapy for just the general population and a long line of personal training with individuals over years and years, and then starting to really study more about nutrition and the implications of nutrition on our health, on our wellbeing on our you know, community and so on and so forth. Speaker 3 (04:45): And so what we've done with our, our coaching program now is really leveraged the best pieces of the fitness of the nutrition of the lifestyle coaching to try and create individualized programs for someone depending on their goals. Speaker 2 (04:59): Yeah. Were you always like an athlete or did the, that kind of shift for you later? Or what, what was that journey like for you? Speaker 3 (05:09): You know I did grow up a bit of an athlete. I I'll albeit not a great one. But by virtue of, of going through sports so in high school I tore my ACL which got me really, really interested into the physical therapy process and into the sport performance process. And then similarly is I suffered from a number of gastrointestinal issues when I was 15, 16 and beyond to the degree that I was very limited with the types of foods I could eat, I was getting sick all the time. I was in a number of different an acid medications, and the doctors couldn't really figure out what was going on with me. And so that also led me to really starting to try and understand how my nutrition impacted my health, right. And through the years of studying undergrad and I actually played rugby for university of Arizona undergrad. You guys, we're gonna be talking about meal planning, and I feel like this is a really important topic because it is one of the things that I think I've overlooked. especially lately where I have dismissed the importance of planning out my meals. Now I'm pretty good. I feel like I eat pretty healthy on a regular basis and I can make good choices. Now I do love me some sugar and I got back to the sugar while I was pregnant. Partly because when I was pregnant and two, when I got COVID, when I, a lot of the food didn't taste good anymore, and I was just kind of eating to survive in my third trimester and because of life, because of all of the things, because food didn't sound good because I was having a lot of food reactions and things while I was pregnant and all of the excuses in the whole entire world, I got out of practice in planning, my family meals. (02:44): And it was let's just go to the grocery store and buy what looks good. And with the increase in food cost and all of the different things that are happening right now. I think it's really important that not only me personally, take a step back and start planning these things out a little bit more, but then also for you guys to do that so that we can prevent more waste especially when it comes to food. I, I know I feed a lot of the food and groceries that I buy to my chickens or the pigs or , or whoever will eat them. And I'm really looking for better ways to reduce that expense for my family, so that we can have nutrient dense foods that don't cost the sit arm of the leg, or because the way that we do our budget, we have a set monthly budget. (03:46): I don't wanna run out of budget money because I haven't used my resources to the best of my ability. Okay. So I wanted to give you the ideas and tips that I use when planning my meals. And of course, we're gonna be giving you guys some resources here at the end of this episode. But first and foremost, what I do when I start meal planning for my family is I, well, while I'm, I'm thinking about planning my meals, I go to each person in my household and I ask them, is there something you would like to eat this week because let's face it, I'm the mom and I run about out of ideas, or there are things that I'm like, I just don't wanna cook anymore or whatever it may be. So I go to each one of them and just say, Hey, is there anything that sounds good or anything that you would like me to get to the grocery store? (04:46): Ultimately I have V veto power and I cannot get it, or I don't have to make it, or whatever, if it's something crazy or disgusting or that I just don't wanna make or whatever. Right. Whatever the reason is I get to be in control of that. So that's the, what first thing that I do. And a lot of times I'll do either exactly what they said, or I try to incorporate it in or I find ways to allow them that food freedom especially since I have girls. And I think that's super important that they develop good, healthy relationships with food. And I don't ever want to tell them, you know, that's not good for you, that's gonna make you fat, whatever. So that's the first thing I, that I do. The second thing that I do is I go to my fridge, my pantry, and my Frazer. (05:47): And I see what items, what food items, ingredients that I have that either need to be used up or that are gonna go bad or draw some kind of idea or inspiration from the things that I already have. So I'll give you an example in my fridge currently, I have a cucumber, I , I have lettuce. I have celery, I think I have maybe an onion or two. I'm trying to remember. I don't have it all in front of me, but, and then I start to think, okay, I have this, I have that, you know, what can I do with the celery? So can I do an on the log for the kids as a snack to use it up, or maybe as I am thinking about other recipes, I can find ways to incorporate the celery into my, into the foods that I'm making so that I don't waste them. (06:50): So I don't have to throw that, that ingredient out. Or so when it this is the only thing that's coming to mind, on this spot. So like a chicken salad sandwich, right. I might make a chicken salad sandwich for my family and use that celery as part of that, so that we can use it up and not waste it. So that's just an idea, right? Because I know that I have those ingredients. I find that my waste for food is less when I, when I do this method also looking at in the freezer, Hey, I've got chicken already. I don't need to go buy chicken. Or if, if there's a good sale on chicken, I might stock up. The next thing I like to do is look at any grocery ads. I typically just look at them on my phone. (07:50): I have, so we have fries here. I just downloaded the fries app. And I look on, on my phone. What's what's on sale for the week. I don't always buy what's on sale because who has time for that? Just kidding. No, I, it is important to me, but I also don't just buy something because it's on sale. Okay. I try to take that into consideration when I am planning out my meals to make sure, like, I don't know if something, so, okay. I'll, here's, here's another example. I ran to the grocery store this morning because we don't go shopping on Sundays and somebody didn't grow grocery shopping over the weekend. And we had to pack lunches and strawberries were on sale. So strawberries were super cheap this week, organic strawberries. So I was all about that. And I bought like three or four of those little carton things so that we could eat fresh throughout the, throughout the week. (08:58): And I can incorporate that into meals. I can incorporate that into breakfast ideas, so

We have hope Praza on with us today, and I'm super excited to be talking to you guys about health, fitness, Pilates and how that it played is a role in thyroid as well. So welcome hope. (02:06): Yeah. Thank you. Thanks so much for having me. (02:08): Yeah. So for the listeners, give us a little bit of a background as to who you are, what you do, what you specialize in, all of that. (02:18): Yeah. So I am the owner of a brick and mortar plotty space, fitness studio. And so our studios are built on Pate's principles. We have six signature classes all based on Pate's principles. So they're all focused on mobility, flexibility balance in the core. It's like, you know, at the core of it is the core and that's kind of what our classes are based on. And in addition to that, I'm also a holistic nutritionist and a function diagnostic nutrition practitioner. And so I've kind of blended the two together while also having kinda two separate businesses with my nutrition business running online, and then my brick and mortar UMWA studio. (02:56): Yeah. Super fun. And how did you, so you started with Pilates and then moved into Nu nutrition. (03:03): I did. Yeah. Yeah. So my background is in dance and that's really what got me into Pilates. I danced for 20 however many years of my life. And so that kind of led me into Pilates, which led me down the path for the brick and mortar. (03:15): Super fun. So did you start doing Pilates like in college or? (03:20): Yeah. So it's funny. I was just thinking about this the other day too. I, I actually started doing floods when I was, I guess I was probably in high school. I would go to the gym with my mom and she would go to like, you know, they had the old school step aerobics classes, you know, and so we would do step aerobics and then like once a week they'd have floods and so I'd go with her, but then our really got into it when I was in college. And I just, I was teaching group fitness and then I just decided like Pilates, it just, it just kind of naturally learned that way, that what somebody recommended it like, oh, you should get certified. And so I just kinda started my path in Pilates as well. It just matched so well with my dance background and I just, I loved doing it. It I'm like, oh, I don't wanna teach it. So yeah. (04:02): Yeah. I love that. So I danced too. Awesome. Yeah, I did. So at my school we were very highly competitive in the dance field. Yeah. And so I made varsity team my freshman year Uhhuh, and that was like the first year, any varsity or any freshman had made yeah. (04:21): Made varsity, (04:22): Made varsity in like that's so cool. 10 years or something ridiculous. And so I love that and I, I, you know, I, a fan of Pilates and a fan of yoga and all of those things, they just kind of mm-hmm go together. (04:36): They do? They do. (04:38): And I, okay. So I took yoga my first like yoga classes were my freshman year in high school and my teacher was so weird and I was like, I, this (04:49): Is not, yeah. (04:51): I hate yoga if this is what yoga is. I hate it. (04:55): Not for me. (04:57): Yes. (04:57): Could totally have that experience though. And I mean, I honestly it's the same with Pilates too, and I think it's important too, for, you know, anyone listening, who isn't familiar with Pilates, like there are multiple schools of teaching with Pilates, you know, there's more classical based, more contemporary. Our studios are more contemporary based, so it's more functional movement. It's more like natural progressions and like a better, more functional flow to like the class and stuff, which is what I loved about it. Contemporary style. Cause it, it lit more just to like dance, how it all flows together and it all move, you know, mm-hmm so there is, and you'll always find, you know, there's teachers that you like in teachers that, you know, don't, aren't a good fit for you and it's the same with Pilates too. So you definitely have to find what fits best for you and what feels best for you and what you job with, you know? (05:41): Yeah. I, and I love that point because I feel like a lot of times with exercise and movement, people will try out, like you said, a certain class and they're like, oh, this isn't for me. Mm-Hmm . But I have a really good friend of mine who had her entire colon removed. Oh, wow. And she's been doing Pilates to help with her core muscles because obviously that's really important . Mm. And that's Pilates has been extremely beneficial and I love that. It's so gentle on the body. (06:14): Totally. Yeah. And that's really at think that's kind of the premise of my studio. Cause we do have some like higher intensity classes and stuff, but the whole, our premise really is like, this is for longevity. Like you can still do high intensity classes and it still be gentle on your body. Like, it doesn't mean you have to be, you know, pounding your joints or throwing, you know, 500 pounds over your head and stuff. Like you can still be gentle to your body and do a higher intensity

Welcome to the thriving gyroid podcast. (01:29): Welcome back to today's episode today is kind of a different episode. I don't know, I don't know exactly what to call it. So I wanna talk about one of the fatal mistakes that I see happening for people in general, when it comes to health, when it comes to their thyroid on and on and on. So just the other day yesterday, I had a lady reach out to me on Facebook. She told a little bit about her situation. She says she's looking to lose weight. She's done a lot of work on herself in the past. She's spent tons of money on supplements and testing and naturopathic doctors and hormone replacement therapy. And since all of this, she has gained 20 pounds for total of about a 40 to 50 pound weight gain according to her right everybody's body is a little bit different and we need to keep that in mind, but she was really reaching out to ask if, you know, one of our programs would benefit her. (02:40): She's already gluten free. She's already dairy free. She walks five, five days a week. But she's still unable to lose weight. So anyways, this was through Instagram. And if you guys Instagram me, I will typically send you a message. Especially lately I have been using a lot more of the voice messages and she was just so kind she was like, I did not expect this to be a full on conversation. And anyways, we, we sent several messages back and forth to each other, but the big thing that I wanted to talk about and addressed date really stemming from this conversation was the fact that this poor lady has worked with an apathic doctor. She has spent tons and tons of money on trying to get healthy and feel in her skin and lose weight and balance out her hormones and all of these different things. (03:44): And she's trying to go the natural route and, oh, there's kind of a lot to this story. So I'm trying to figure out the best way to, to go about this, but really what I told her. And, and again, based off what she was explaining to me is we have to work with the body in a specific order. And one of the things that her naturalpathic doctor wanted her to do was cleanses and H C, D H C G diets and all of these things. And I was like, I, I am trying to find nice words and not that I don't wanna be nice, but I don't know, you know, obviously the full situation, this could be warranted or whatever. My thought on the H C G diet is one that I'm not fond of. And let me tell you why. So this is a personal story. (04:50): So I feel like I can, you know, speak into that a little bit, but I had, I was seeing a natural pathic doctor a while ago several years ago. And he recommended that I go on this CG diet as well. I was not able to lose weight. I was really struggling and battling with my personal self image. And he was like, oh, you, you, you know, your thyroid is fine, even though it was not fine, by the way it's fine. You need to do all this work on your adrenals and this and that. And I'm like, okay. And I did that for several months. And I went back in and I'm like, listen, the weight is not coming off. I've hired a personal trainer. I've gluten free. I'm dairy free. I have cut out sugar. I've cut out all processed foods. I have cleaned up my diet to the point where it is almost ridiculous that I can't even enjoy food . (05:45): And he said to me, well, we can put you on meal replacement shakes. And I said, Nope, I'm not gonna do that because I want to learn. And I believe in whole foods, real foods, and I just mirror replacement shakes, especially the company that he was recommending was not my favorite because I knew the ingredients in there. And I knew that they were harmful. Okay. So he said, well, option number two is you do the HDG diet. And I said, okay, give me some more information on that. And I went home and you guys, I was seriously thinking about this. And I went home and I talked to my husband about it. And I said to him, I was like, I am supposed to be teaching people how to get healthy and lose weight and feel good in their body. And I can't even say that I feel good in my body and my, and so I'm trying to be this quote, unquote poster child for health, and really I hadn't dove into you know, thyroid specifically at that point was just kind of helping everybody. (07:01): So I was supposed to be in my mind this perfect picture and this perfect image of what health looked like. And my self-esteem was really tanking. It was not tanking. It was really just taking a hit because I, I didn't feel good about the way that I looked. And he said, you know, I support you. I love you. You can do whatever you want. He said, but you are trying to teach people how to eat and how to take care of their body. And you're over here thinking about considering this, you know, this is what I've heard you say for a long time is that this is something that you don't believe in. And I am so thankful that he said that because that was really the moment where I was like, okay, I have to figure this out. And that I left that doctor because I clearly we were not getting in the right direction. (08:03): And so I started going to see, you know, different gastroenterologists and endocrinologists and biological doctors. And I started spending all this time and money and energy and effort towards figuring out the answer and the solution because me and this guy were just totally on different pay ages. And I was getting sucked into the quick fix. Okay. The H C G
