Then Is Now Episode 30 - Horror Primer 2 - The Mummy Movies
Part 2 of our series on How to Get a Younger Person into Horror is here, to start 2021 off right! Filmmaker Chris Esper joins me as we continue our journey to help you, the listener, get someone to enjoy Horror movies! If you start them young enough, we have recommended starting with the Universal Horror Classics: Dracula, Frankenstein, The Wolfman, The Mummy, The Invisible Man, and the Creature From the Black Lagoon. On our first part, in Episode 26, Chris and I discussed Dracula and it's sequels. This episode we continue that tradition with The Mummy (1932) and its sequels The Mummy's Hand (1940), The Mummy's Tomb (1942), The Mummy's Ghost (1944) and The Mummy's Curse (1944). We had some great laughs, particularly as the movies decreased in quality, but they're all still fun, nonetheless!! Remember to prime them if they are not used to Black & White movies by starting them with The Little Rascals, The Three Stooges, or even The Twilight Zone! They will truly come to appreciate that not all movies or TV shows have to be in color! Chris Esper's website is: storiesmotion.com, and he's also available on Facebook! Then Is Now Episode 27 - Fright Night on Channel 9 with James Arena
As of this writing, a winter storm is hitting us like crazy. It's time to shut the lights off and snuggle up on the couch to watch a scary movie, perhaps even a late night scary film! For those who grew up in New York in the 1970s and 80s, you had a plethora of horror film programming, but one that stands out among the rest and is beloved and remembered to this day was Fright Night on Channel 9, WOR-TV! In those days, there were no movie channels, so it was up to the big 3 networks and local independent stations to air movies for the audience to enjoy. And there were no DVRs or Streaming services, so if you missed it...you missed it! Fright Night even reached my house in a suburb of Boston, in the 1980s when our cable system carried the New York channels WOR and WPIX, and I fondly remember staying up late to watch it! Well now the joy can be spread through the amazing book Fright Night on Channel 9, written by the talented James Arena! James joins us on this episode and we delve into the history of Fright Night on WOR, how these types of shows were created, why they were so fun and beloved, and we even share our own personal memories of growing up and watching late night (or weekend daytime) horror shows! James is also author of of a 6-book series spotlighting dance music artists, and we discuss those books as well. So sit back, snuggle up, and listen to a fabulous interview!! James and his books can be found on Amazon, and anywhere you can get books online. For international customers, go to bookdepository.com and receive free shipping anywhere in the world! He is on Facebook at: https://www.facebook.com/frightnightonchannel9.thebook/ James' history of Fright Night is on DVD Drive-In. As always, you can send your feedback to thenisnow42@gmail.com. Then Is Now Episode 26 - Universal Horror Primer
Greetings! Then Is Now is the show about not only introducing young people to all the cool stuff they missed out on, but also educating people about stuff they SHOULD know. Horror movies are no exception. But if you are a life long fan of horror, and you want to introduce someone else or even a young person to the joys of horror movies, where does one begin? It's harder with younger people because so many horror movies are simply not appropriate for children. Well, we at Then Is Now have created this special sub-series of shows in which Re-Gor and filmmaker Chris Esper discuss this very matter, starting you off at the beginning with the classic Universal Horror movies! Instead of simply going through Universal's film library in release order, we are presenting them in series order; that is, we are taking a major monster movie and discussing that as well as all of its sequels. In this episode, part 1 of this new sub-series, Re-Gor and Chris start with Dracula from 1931 and all of its sequels: Dracula's Daughter (1936), Son of Dracula (1943), and House of Dracula (1945). You may have to explain to the person you are teaching that not all movies are in color. If they are very young, try getting them used to watching things like The Three Stooges and The Little Rascals, among other things. As they will undoubtedly be entertained by those film short series, after a while they won't question why there is no color in a particular film or TV series. As you start down the journey with us, you will be able to explain to your protege how black and white helps create mood and atmosphere, particularly in a scary film! So start checking these films out, beginning with the Dracula series, and come back and join us for a fun episode! As always, please leave us a great review at iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify, or wherever you download your podcasts, so others can find the show! Visit our website havenpodcasts.com for other fun stuff including our sister show, The East Meets the West, in which we discuss Shaw Brothers movies and Spaghetti Westerns! Then Is Now Episode 25 - Dr. Scream's Spookshow Revival with Keith Stickley
Episode 25 is upon us and have we got a fun one for you! As discussed in a previous episode, Spook Shows are an almost forgotten form of entertainment where people would go to a movie theater after the films for the day were shown (usually at midnight). A magician would perform amazing magic tricks as well as a seance; monsters would come out of the movie screen and kidnap girls in the audience; a blackout would occur in which ghosts and other apparitions would fly all around the theater and much, much more! Spook Shows were wildly popular from the 1930s until the mid-70s, and many thought they were gone and forgotten. Well, they're not! Joining us in this episode is Keith Stickley, the man behind Dr. Scream's Spook Show Revival. Keith has fashioned a Spook Show for modern audiences and is helping to keep this form of entertainment alive! We had a fun conversation that covered the history and pioneers of Spook Shows, as well as what goes on in Dr. Scream's shows and more! So join us for this episode so you can learn all about this almost forgotten type of unique, and fun, entertainment! Pictures from Dr Scream's Spook Show will be in the posting for this episode on our website. Dr. Scream's Spook Show Revival can be found at https://www.facebook.com/SpookShowRevival. As always, please leave us a great review at iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify, or wherever you download your podcasts, so others can find the show! We here at Haven Podcasts are especially thankful for our listeners. Happy Thanksgiving, Listeners! Ever since Spency Domepiece and I covered Forbidden Planet (1956) back in episode 4, we've had quite a few people ask us to cover more classic Sci-Fi movies that everyone SHOULD know! So, in response to that, filmmaker Joe Lemieux will be joining me in a special sub-series here on Then Is Now, aptly titled Classic Sci-Fi Movies! In this episode, Joe and I discuss the 1953 epic, War of the Worlds from Producer George Pal! We had fun talking about the movie and had some great laughs while doing so! Then Is Now Episode 16 - 13 Days of Hallowtober - The Wolf Man (1941)
"Even a man who is pure in heart, and says his prayers by night, may still become a wolf when the wolfsbane blooms, and the autumn moon is bright." That's the famous phrase from Universal's classic film, The Wolf Man from 1941, and on today's episode Spency Domepiece and I break down the film and discuss not only it's plot and behind the scenes topics, but also it's place in film history and our hearts! If you're new to the show, we present things that today's generation probably missed out on, yet is something they SHOULD know about. And the Wolf Man is certainly something that everyone should be familiar with! Our 8th episode of the 13 Days of Hallowtober special series on Then Is Now Podcast is upon us! Filmmaker Chris Esper joins me once again as we tackle the scary 1985 Italian horror film, Demons, directed by Lamberto Bava! If Jaws made going to the beach a terrifying jaunt, and Friday the 13th made you afraid to go camping, then Demons makes cinema-going another frightening excursion! The picture concerns a group of people who receive tickets to a sneak preview of an unnamed film, and in the theater they find that it is a horror movie and is causing demons to appear in the cinema! Then Is Now Episode 14 - 13 Days of Hallowtober - Saw and Saw II (2004 & 2005)
Prepare to be scared, Fright Fans!! Today I am joined once again by Spency Domepiece and Squishy as we take a dive into not one, but two fright features: Saw (2004) and Saw II (2005)!! Not your typical horror series, the Saw movies together are like a tightly written TV Series in which later films not only reference, but explain things from earlier films. Saw's reputation precedes it, and it is a far more than a gore film, and definitely NOT torture porn like Hostel! We encourage you to brave these two films, then listen to our discussion as we break them down and discuss the truly human aspects of these movies along with the scares, that make them so popular. On today's show, we are joined once again by filmmaker Chris Esper to discuss the 1968 cult classic, Night of the Living Dead!! The granddaddy of all modern zombie films, Night was deftly directed by the late, great George Romero and has served as the template for setting up the rules of how zombies should be portrayed and what happens if they bite someone. Chris and I had so much fun breaking this film down and discussing it's making, so sit back once again and enjoy!
