Indigenous Australians carry the legacy of one of the oldest living cultures in the world but are sadly overrepresented in homelessness statistics. On Census night in 2011, an estimated 26,743 Indigenous people were experiencing homelessness. The LGBTQI+ community are at a higher risk of experiencing youth homelessness, and often encounter discrimination when seeking support. In this episode, we discuss how homelessness intersects with LGBTQIA+ rights in Melbourne, from the perspective of Queenie, a young transgender woman with lived experience of homelessness.

A collaborative report entitled “The Cost of Youth Homelessness in Australia Study” found that 56% of young people experiencing homelessness had to leave home due to domestic violence on at least one occasion.
