WOP007: Sylvia Berte on bringing her handmade jewelry to NYC
Founder and designer Sylvia Berte of Swa, makes one of a kind and colorful collections, always led by the conviction that every personality is unique, and should be to express as such. Sylvia says: “I believe each and every one of us is composed of many selves. I imagine a world where we embrace all of them, where we are free from codes.”
Using coconut fiber is certainly what is the most remarkable in Swa jewelry. Sylvia found this material in her debuts: “I started collecting coconut fiber during my holidays in Martinique, my homeland. At the time, I had no idea what would become of it. But a part of me knew I was on the verge of creating something. I thought about it again and again. I stared at it, hours after hours. I touched it, I felt it, until I became accustomed to its rough texture. Somedays, I got bored. Others, I was overflowing with enthusiasm. I dreamed. I imagined. And that is how Swa was born.”
Perfecting her technique day after day, Sylvia gives an assertive style to each of her creations. She breathes life to this fiber which submits itself to imagination almost without limit.
