Ep. #12 Major League University w/ Austin Byler
Austin Byler knows that hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard.  Byler was a 2-time MLB draft pick (Nationals, 9th round 2014 & Diamondbacks, 11th round 2015)  Byler believed in himself and his ability to play baseball at the next level, but many coaches overlook him in High School.  Byler had limited interest from college coaches despite individual and team success on the field.  However, Austin excelled at the University of Nevada Reno, and is using his career platform and experience to help empower other athletes across the nation with Major League University.   Byler describes how important the mental game is and why it played an internal role in his career development.  In Baseball, the 5-tool player is very uncommon. Baseball players are typically graded on 5-objective tools but aren't typically taught the mental game which Byler says is a key separator and the sixth tool that distinguishes the good from the great.  Many people know the importance of the mental game, but few know how to implement and teach it but Byler is changing that! Austin Byler created Major League University which is a platform to educate athletes for long-term success on and off the field utilizing the power of the mental game.  Byler has dedicated his life to empowering athletes and has the vision to take Major League University nationwide setting up workshops with opportunities to empower athletes across a variety of sports.  Byler breaks down specific tactics and mindsets that he uses with the people he teaches and speaks with on a consistent basis.  I encourage you to listen and share the episode with a friend, I know you will get value from this episode!  Follow Austin on Twitter (@AustinByler14) and Instagram (austinbyler) and visit https://majorleagueuniversity.com/ to learn more about what he is doing!  --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/will07/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/will07/support

Ep. #10---Living the Baseball Dream w/ Cody Birdsong
Like many young baseball players, Cody Birdsong had a dream to play professional baseball.  Birdsong is living out that dream, as he was selected in the MLB Draft last year by the Atlanta Braves.  Cody joins the podcast to discuss his experience with baseball and the adjustments and improvements he has made to his game during the process.  Birdsong is from Poplar Bluff, MO, and played two seasons at Quincy University (NCAA DII) before being selected by the Braves.  Birdsong was one of the most feared hitters in the nation during his two years with Quincy earning all-conference and all-American honors showcasing his premiere slugging ability.  Prior to Quincy Birdsong spent two years at John A Logan, a junior college where he played alongside multiple future draft picks. Cody attributes his progress and development to hard work and being surrounded by other talented and competitive individuals which create an environment that requires you to rise to the occasion. Ep. #9---Preparation, Mindset, Confidence & Unfinished Business w/ Riley Martin
In this episode, we go one on one with Riley Martin, a four-year left-handed starting pitcher for the Quincy University Hawks – an NCAA D-2 baseball powerhouse. During Martin's tenure in a Hawks uniform, he’s seen the best times: two GLVC Conference titles, three NCAA regional appearances, a regional championship, and a trip to the DII world series. Recently, of Salem, Illinois was named to Quincy’s all-decade team, a high honor held among other players who have been able to continue their talents into the professional ranks.  He joins the show to talk about his experience on and off the field, his favorite moments, and what the future holds. Martin's senior season was anything but normal. He was within range of breaking Quincy’s all-time wins record. He and his teammates were anticipating a promising year with plans for a deep run in the postseason. But the season ended abruptly in early March because of the global pandemic. Martin shares how he and his teammates dealt with this reality and how he has set his sights on the 2021 campaign.  Martin’s improvements heading into the 2020 season were noticeable. The fastball velocity had increased and his devasting off-speed pitch was only getting better. He was coming off the heels of an impressive junior campaign in which he earned All-Conference honors and registered an 8-2 record on the mound for a team who climbed as high as 4th in the nation on the DII polls.  Riley describes being sidelined for four starts his Sophomore year and how it taught him to take his recovery more seriously. We detail Martins's transition into Quincy and how he led the Hawks in starts as a true freshman when the squad reached the World Series, and how he has been chasing the feeling of being at the pinnacle for DII baseball ever since.  Moving forward, Martin is projected to be one of the most experienced starting pitchers in the country next season. Riley talks about how his lengthy experience, including three years of post-season pitching, has given him the confidence that he plays with on the mound.  Martin shares his journey through collegiate athletics and what’s been necessary for him to excel at his craft –learning to work hard, prepare, and focus on every single repetition you get because they are limited.  If you have seen Riley pitch, you may know he is a fierce competitor. Riley tells a story and details why he is the type of pitcher that needs to play with that emotion to help him get locked in.  We discuss what Riley has been able to learn from outings that haven't gone his way, and how he can consistently achieve peak-performance on the mound.  Off the field, Martin is also an over-achiever in the classroom as a consistent member of the Dean's list along with being a Biology and Chemistry double-major.  Before the wake of the pandemic, Martin planned to enroll at SIUE's pharmacy school, but he’s delaying that admission to tend to unfinished business he has with the Hawks. Follow Riley's journey and keep up with him moving forward by connecting with him on twitter (@Riley_Martin) and be sure to share the show if you felt moved or gained value from it! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/will07/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/will07/support

Ep. #8 --- Coaching Experiences, Philosophies, and Excellence w/ Tim Cashel
Former Webster Groves High School boys’ soccer coach Tim Cashel joins the Podcast to talk soccer – playing and his coaching philosophy. The focus extends far beyond the idea of just winning. For 17-seasons Cashel guided the Statemen with the most memorable moment being back-to-back state titles in 2014 and 2015 making Webster the first public school in the state to earn that honor. In 2018, Cashel’s team once again made another trip to the state final. Cashel’s honors and experience are impressive. He was named Midwest Regional Coach of the Year in 2015. His resume also includes stints as the Goalkeeper Coach at St. Louis University and the St. Louis Soccer Club. As a player, Cashel attended DuBourg High School where he earned All- Metro and All-State honors. And 4-year college career included a spot on the nationally recognized St. Louis University Billikens team. Much of this podcast is dedicated to Cashel’s coaching philosophy which at its core is more about developing players to do their best than strictly a focus on wins and losses. Cashel describes how it all began as an assistant coach under a long time Statesmen Head Coach, Tom Holmes, and also discusses the motivation behind creating the Webster Groves Soccer Club - a youth program focused on playing the game the right way. Cashel’s also shares his pregame message to the eventual 2015 State Champions. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/will07/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/will07/support
