Using AI to Fight Caste Discrimination Online ft. Amitabh Kumar, Founder of Social Media Matters & Justin Davis, CEO of Spectrum Labs
This episode features Amitabh Kumar, Founder of Social Media Matters and Justin Davis, CEO of Spectrum Labs. Spectrum Labs has partnered with Amitabh and his team to build and distribute a model that will use AI to fight caste discrimination online. Social Media Matters is a group of feminists dedicated to creating safe online spaces. Their initiatives fight back against toxic online behaviors like cyberbullying and fake news, and support digital safety efforts in a variety of sectors including dating, gaming, and social media. Our conversation focuses on cyberbullying as it applies to caste discrimination.India’s caste system is a social hierarchy that divides Hindus into rigid groups ranked by “purity”. There are 4 main castes, as well as a group of social outliers, the “Untouchables”, who make up over one-sixth of India’s population. This group is socially ostracized, lives in segregation, and assigned “ritually polluting” tasks that fall outside of the caste system.Despite its constitutional abolition in 1950, the practice of “untouchability” and discriminatory behavior based on social ranking has carried over to India’s digital world. Find out more about how Spectrum Labs is working with Social Media Matters to develop initiatives and products that fight caste discrimination online.Featuring:- Amitabh Kumar, Founder, Social Media Matters (www.socialmediamatters.in/ | www.linkedin.com/in/amikumar/)- Justin Davis, CEO, Spectrum Labs (https://www.getspectrum.io/ | https://www.linkedin.com/in/justindavis/)- Hosted by: Meredith Reed-------------------------------------------The Brief is a podcast featuring trends, topics and conversations on Internet safety. The UrSafe app is a hands-free, voice-activated personal safety interface that empowers users to stay safe anytime, anywhere. Many online platforms -- dating apps, rideshare services, peer-to-peer marketplaces, etc. -- connect strangers in the virtual world and then transition into a real-world encounter. The UrSafe app enables its users to mitigate their risk, both by (a) deterring potential offenders by its presence; and (b) facilitating a rapid emergency response if a dangerous situation were to arise.UrSafe recently announced the launch of their “Follow Me” feature, a cutting-edge geolocation service that enables the user to share their location with one or more trusted contacts. The app provides these contacts with the ability to track and view the user’s location for as long as the user would like.UrSafe empowers users around the globe by providing a simple way to discretely record audio and video if a questionable or dangerous situation should arise. It also empowers the family and friends of the user by offering the ability to know the user’s location and gives them the chance to respond quickly if the user is ever in need of help.Featuring:- Anthony Oyogoa, M.D., CEO and Co-Founder of UrSafe (ursafe.com/ | linkedin.com/in/anthonyoyogoa/)- Hosted by: Meredith Reed-------------------------------------------The Brief is a podcast featuring trends, topics and conversations on Internet safety.
