Our level of effort for this podcast is representative of the level of effort put into the writing and creation of this show. We don’t know, friends. We are slowly losing faith in this show — and we didn’t have much faith in it to begin with. We are searching harder for an A-plot than our group is searching for a missing Althea. The new, more interesting story lines are being abandoned for weeks to focus on characters who have been stuck in the same arcs for two seasons now. The introduction of Dwight was supposed to be exciting, but it felt shoehorned into the series and was introduced in a rather unbelievable way. We’re still holding out for better days – hopefully we will find our way out of this moonless midnight. Daniel Salazar is back and we feel like we should be way more excited by this episode than we actually are. Conceptually, the idea of radioactive walkers sounds exciting, but the execution is so poor that we’re left feeling quite a bit underwhelmed. Couple that with the fact that there is literally no ‘A-plot’ this season, and our characters seems to be stuck in the same narrative loops for going on two seasons, and you have a recipe for disaster on your hands. Fingers crossed that next week picks things up a bit, but we’re not feeling hopeful. The word "masterpiece" is rarely a word we use to describe anything relating to The Walking Dead especially of seasons late. But with Season 9 comes new leadership, and with it, a new direction for the show. We are utterly impressed by what we saw in Episode 15 "The Calm Before." It truly is a return to form in the most spectacular way possible. And it's all perfectly complimented by the quality show running throughout the entirety of Season 9. The moments are earned, the drama is real, and the emotional impact of the events are still being felt by us days after viewing the episode. This week we're treated to an Angela Kang style flashback episode explaining Michonne's hesitancy to support any group other than Alexandria, as well as those mystery scars both her and Daryl are sporting on their backs. Did the episode live up to the hype? We think so, although the episode hangs solely on one rather large coincidence that we find a little hard to believe. For what might be the first time this season, we have some major disagreements about the quality of an episode. Sebastian and Dennis argue "Chokepoint" felt contrived and partially unnecessary. Jon thinks this episode represents a turning point for the show, in a good way. Ultimately, the episode ends up relying on some of the same old tropes of season's past to build tension, which makes it very hard to engage with. But the episode is not without its bright spots. The fight choreography is some of the best the show has ever seen, and we're really digging the Connie/Daryl relationship. What did you think of tonight's episode of The Walking Dead? Another week, another pretty solid episode of The Walking Dead. Yes, we have some complaints about the less important pregnancy C-plot, but drama with The Whisperers and Alexandria's internal political struggles are enough to keep us interested. We feel the season is pacing nicely and building up to bigger events in the weeks to come. The Walking Dead really hit its stride this week and managed to find a way to delicately balance some of the more disturbing imagery we've seen on this show with some much needed humor. Samantha Morton continues to rock it as cold-as-ice Alpha; this week learning she doesn't have much patience for crying babies or the use of the word "mom." It's these moments that show just how truly terrifying Alpha is, and the lengths she'll go to keep everyone and everything in her life in line. Knowing there are a ton more great Alpha moments from the comics to come, we can't help but be nervously excited for the Fair. And next week: Ryan Hurst as Beta! We are loving Samantha Morton's portrayal of Alpha in Season 9 of The Walking Dead, strange Baltimore/Southern accent and all. This episode did a lot of great things in regards to developing both Lydia and Alpha quickly. Dare we say we almost wish the Magna/Yumiko portions of the episode were left out to let the Alpha backstory breathe a bit more.
