How to Group Students Effectively for Learning with Diane Snowball
Teachers have different ways to group students, and these methods are not always effective for learning.  For example, fixed grouping for a whole term is a common practice. While this is convenient,  does it lead to better learning opportunities for all students? Is there a better way?  To talk about this, Sharon Callen is again joined by Diane Snowball, a highly experienced educator who led significant change in education throughout whole school districts in the US as well as Australia. The duo talk about what they have learned about grouping students, grouping strategies, what to focus on and what to avoid, tools and resources, and more. How Students Can Inform Our Teaching
We need to learn how to use 'real time data' to inform our teaching. And so often that comes from our students. So what can we find out from our students, and what is most important? What do we need to cover in the curriculum, and what are some effective resources we can use? Here's just a few tips: Set dedicated time for students to engage in reading and writing every day Teachers should read aloud at least once a day Create multiple opportunities for students to share and discuss meanings they created from these reading and writing opportunities Use real books for reading Allow for student choice about what they read or write Teachers should rove around the room, interacting with small groups or individuals Have low frequency of sustained periods of whole class, teacher-centred instruction Allow for sharing of interpretations of own and other’s texts Tune in to hear many more insights. This episode was recorded as part of a Literacy Leader Masterclass, which was a series of Zoom sessions over the year with a band of excited educators.  We were able to share our successes and challenges in the classroom, getting feedback on what we are doing. And there was always a new topic to learn about each time. Sessions were recorded, so participants never missed a thing. Stay tuned for future masterclasses or get in touch.   Enjoy, and let us know thoughts and feedback in our Facebook Group.  Subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or your favourite podcast player.   RELATED TEACHIFIC RESOURCES ONLINE Reading Conferences: Assessment for Teaching and Learning by Diane Snowball The Reading Curriculum: What to Teach and What to Assess by Diane Snowball Conferring with Readers, Assessment Rubric, K-2 Conferring with Readers, Assessment Rubric, 3-6 Conferring With Readers Checklists K-6 Planning Toolkit: Five Levels of Text Complexity, F-6 Reading Response Journals by Sharon Callen Reading Conference Toolkits, K-6   WHAT OUR CLIENTS SAY ABOUT US... Can Writing Live Without Reading? With Dr Brian Cambourne
Teaching writing (and literacy) can sometimes be 'a bit of this and a bit of that'. Sometimes we teach in a compartmentalised way, and there is no connection between lessons. We often don’t see a transfer of what we are teaching to students using the skills in their own writing. To help us with this, Dr. Brian Cambourne joins the show to talk about teaching writing effectively, building connection in literacy and shares the relevant academic research and evidence. Dr. Cambourne, associate professor, is currently a Principal Fellow at the University of Wollongong in NSW. He started his teaching career in NSW in 1956 and spent the next nine years working in a variety of small, mostly one-teacher primary schools before entering academic life. He has since become one of Australian’s most eminent researchers of literacy and learning. He completed his PhD at James Cook University before becoming a post-doctoral Fellow at the Harvard Graduate School of Education; a Fulbright Scholar; Research Fellow at the Centre for Studies in Reading at the University of Illinois and Research Fellow at the Learning Centre at Tucson. Brian's national and international scholarship has earned him many prestigious awards, including being inducted into the International Reading Association’s Reading Hall of Fame, and the Outstanding Educational Achievement Award by the Australian College of Educators.  In this episode, we talk about how to teach writing in more effective, inquiring, explicit and powerful ways. You'll also understand what it means to do this in connection with broader literacy approaches, with the curriculum and across the school, as well as individually.  And much more! Tips and Tools For Supporting Early Learners
When students are at the start of their learning journey, it can be challenging for teachers to know how to put the right literacy steps in place. To talk about this important topic we're joined by Diane Snowball, a highly experienced educator who led significant change in education throughout whole school districts in the US as well as Australia. The session with Diane is from a recent Zoom Q and A session with a group of F-2 teachers at a school in Victoria, Australia. The teachers ask Diane a series of questions related to spelling and word work, but the conversation expanded into other areas of literacy, so Diane could give the context for the teaching work. Just some of the talking points include: Teaching letters and sounds Using shared reading effectively Learning through inquiry The use of encouragement Literacy routines Modelled writing Use of the Literacy Block Literacy across the day The vital use of non fiction texts And much more! Thinking About Reading
Sometimes teachers struggle to see students to do 'big thinking' as they read. Why? Because often we're not enabling our students to do it.  Literacy expert Sharon Callen unpacks this issue in this episode. Sharon talks about why thinking about reading is different from thinking whilst reading. And in thinking about reading, you are conscious of connections, questions and responses. You may even consciously try to apply specific strategies to understand text in a deeper way. In thinking about reading, you are really thinking about thinking, an act called metacognition, which literally means BIG THINKING. Metacognition has been the subject of much study as researchers have attempted to describe ways teachers can actually ’teach’ students to become more effective or strategic thinkers. The idea is that students can become more effective readers by engaging in conscious acts such as questioning, visualising and gathering or synthesising information. In this episode, learn from Sharon how to help your students think about reading.
