Ep. 111: The Vampire of Barcelona
Want to ponder the theoretical morals of someone willing to pay for an eye cream made of dead kids? Well, that's exactly what happens in this episode, where Hannah helps Katy celebrate her first Mother's Day by telling her the story of Enriqueta Martí, the Vampire of Barcelona. It's enraging, disgusting, heartbreaking, and controversial. And for some reason, there is still cake (I guess this is a cake podcast now?) Join the girls as they discuss Enriqueta's alleged crimes, her grizzly death, and what mysteries remain to be uncovered.  Pour your drink of choice (the girls are drinking homemade pharmacist wine), cut a slice of cake, and enjoy this sinister tale.Sources: https://barcelonalowdown.com/enriqueta-marti-vampire-raval/http://hemeroteca.lavanguardia.com/preview/1912/04/19/pagina-3/33336536/pdf.htmlhttps://emadion.it/en/homicides/serial-killers/serial-killer-women/enriqueta-marti-the-barcelona-vampire/https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enriqueta_Mart%C3%AD

Ep. 110: The Salem Witch Trials
Are you a person? Have you ever been seen with an animal of any kind? Has anything mildly inconvenient ever happened to someone you know? Have you ever stumbled over any part of the Lord’s Prayer (or all of it?) Then congratulations! You’re in good company, and we might all be witches, according to 17th century Puritan standards! This week, Hannah is still riding the high of her Salem, MA visit, and tells Katy the abridged story of the infamous witch trials of 1692. There’s wild accusations, fortune telling games, witchcake (and real cake), and not a hearsay law to be found! We tried to keep it mostly on topic, and realize that we barely scratched the surface, but we think it’s a bewitching episode anyway ;)Pour your elixir of choice, cuddle up to your familiar, and cut a slice of witchcake (or real cake that doesn’t include urine). We hope you enjoy this spooky episode!Sources: https://www.history.com/news/7-bizarre-witch-trial-testshttps://www.bustle.com/articles/79820-10-reasons-you-might-have-been-accused-of-being-a-witch-in-the-17th-centuryhttps://www.mentalfloss.com/article/55276/17-signs-youd-qualify-witch-1692https://www.history.com/topics/colonial-america/salem-witch-trialshttps://www.salem.org/salem-witch-trials/https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salem_witch_trialshttps://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/a-brief-history-of-the-salem-witch-trials-175162489/

Ep. 109: The Mother of Rabbits
Babies, birth stories, bunnies, and bad doctors! They all come together to tell the story of Mary Taft, the 18th century woman who convince a lot of people that she was giving birth to rabbits. This week, the story is baby/birth-themed in honor of KATY BEING BACK! The girls could not be more excited to be reunited, and it shows, as they talk about the wild tale of dead bunnies, an unfortunate classist crisis, a bunch of dumb doctors (and a couple smart ones), and why you should never put live or dead animals into your vagina.  This one was just supposed to be punny, but turned into one of the most fun recording sessions we've had yet! Pour your drink of choice, maybe grab a heavily discounted chocolate bunny from your local drug store, and settle in for this wild (hare?) of a tale! Sources: https://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/mary-toft-gave-birth-to-rabbitshttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Tofthttps://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-43073391

Ep. 108: The Eyeball Killer, pt. 2
How hard is it to yank out someone’s eyeball? Why you should always keep track of your x-acto blades. And all the possible uses a serial killer might have for loose eyeballs. This week, Hannah is back with special guest cohost, the other Hannah, to conclude the story of Charles Albright, aka: the Eyeball Killer. This one is just as bizarre (and a bit less boozy) than the first one, so pour your drink of choice, and settle in for the final chapter!Sources: https://www.texasmonthly.com/news-politics/see-no-evil-3/https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Albrighthttps://www.cpha.ca/human-diseases-transmitted-dog-poop

Ep. 107: The Eyeball Killer, pt. 1
Overbearing mothers, taxidermy, a fascination with eyes, and likely some kind of personality disorder. Mix it all together and add a dash of white privilege, and you get this week’s story about Charles Albright, AKA: The Eyeball Killer! This week, Hannah is joined by special guest cohost, Hannah (a different one, we promise) to talk about the wild series of events that led to some of Dallas’s most grizzly murders. This one ended up being longer than we thought, so stay tuned for Part 2.  Pour your drinks, cover your eyes (for safe keeping), and settle in for this gruesome tale!  Sources: https://www.texasmonthly.com/news-politics/see-no-evil-3/https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Albrighthttps://www.cpha.ca/human-diseases-transmitted-dog-poop

Ep. 106: The Boozey Barber
Have you ever wondered exactly how much vodka is TOO much vodka? You'll find out that and much more in this week's episode about Canada's infamous Boozey Barber: Gilbert Paul Jordan. This week, Hannah is joined by the man behind the scenes (Jarek) to talk about this mysterious killer and his bizarre way of murdering his victims. It's always a fun time when Jarek joins the conversation, so pour your favorite drink and join us for this sobering (get it?) look at a serial killer who nearly got away with it all. Ep. 105: The Wendigo
What smells like rotting flesh, has ice in its veins, and eats only human flesh? The Wendigo! This week, Hannah is joined again by special guest cohost, Jenna, to talk about a very Canadian legend that has solidified a place in modern psychology. The girls discuss Canadian rappers, albino black bears, Canadian geography, and more! This one gets a bit boozy, but it’s so much fun!  Get your maps of Canada out, pour your drink of choice, and settle in for this local legend!   Sources: https://murderpedia.org/male.R/r/runner-swift.htmhttps://sciendo.com/article/10.2478/cpp-2019-0014https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Fiddlerhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anishinaabe_clan_systemhttps://knowledgenuts.com/swift-runner-and-wendigo/https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wendigo

Ep. 104: The Sultan's Palace
A huge house in the middle of New Orlean’s French Quarter, rumors of exotic parties fueled by opium and sexy times, and a bloody massacre? This week, Hannah tells special guest host, JENNA, about the legend of the Sultan’s Palace in haunted New Orleans! The girls talk real estate prices, genital-themed wine, and spooky sightings, all while eating donuts. Plus, Hannah struggles to pronounce more French words. This is a delightful introduction to our series of guest hosts who are sitting in while Katy is on maternity leave.  So sit back, grab some donuts, and enjoy this spooky tale of local lore!  Sources: https://ghostcitytours.com/new-orleans/haunted-places/sultans-palace/https://www.verylocal.com/haunted-nola-slaughter-at-the-sultans-french-quarter-palace-gardette-lepretre-house/9188/https://www.realtor.com/realestateandhomes-detail/716-Dauphine-St_New-Orleans_LA_70116_M79262-53687https://www.officialdata.org/us/inflation/1839?amount=20049

Ep. 103: The Villisca Axe Murders
Happy TWO YEARS to us!!! In this very special anniversary episode (and Katy's last before she takes her maternity leave), the girls cover a spooky story, an unsolved mystery, and a piece of local lore, all wrapped up into one chilling tale! Hannah tells Katy about the horrific octuple murder in Villisca, Iowa in 1912. The girls discuss the invention of the Oreo, when blood spatter evidence became a thing, why your retina does not work like a camera, and much much more, all while eating more cake.  Find your own way to celebrate and thank you for joining us these last two years! Ep. 102: The Cora Tree
An ancient oak, mangled by time and weather, sits in the middle of a small town on the Outer Banks of NC. The scar torn down its middle tells the story of a lightning storm. The name carved deeply in its trunk, tells another story. This week, Hannah tells Katy about some of their closer to home local lore: the Cora Tree! Find out why you should keep your Ceremonial Witch Hunting Bowl on you at all times, why being a woman who was good at fishing was dangerous in the 18th century, and why you should never make faces at babies.  This episode is a callback to one of our very first tales (episode 2!), and recording it was a hell of an adventure! The girls are eating cheesecake this week (just go with it), so get your own slice and settle in for this Local Legend!  Sources:https://islandfreepress.org/hatteras-island-features/the-cora-tree-a-halloween-worthy-local-legend-or-a-link-to-the-lost-colony/https://abandonednc.org/the-cora-tree/https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roanoke_Colony#CORA_tree

Ep. 101: The West Memphis Three, pt. 2
What do mail order colleges, alligator snapping turtles, and $0.10 library books have in common? Find out in this week’s episode, when Hannah and Katy conclude the story of the West Memphis Three: three teenagers wrongfully accused of murder in a small town swept up in Satanic panic paranoia. You’ll hear about the prosecution’s straw man case (which included such damning evidence as “they wore a lot of black”), how Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam) and Natalie Maines (The Chicks) helped the boys get a second chance at justice, and who may have actually been behind the murders (spoiler: a relative with no alibi and a history of physical/sexual abuse.) It’s worth the wait, so hang in there until the end! The girls are eating cake again, so cut yourself a slice of something sweet, and join us for the conclusion to this unsolved mystery!Sources: https://www.amazon.com/West-Memphis-Julie-Ann-Doan/dp/B00DHKXHBY/ref=tmm_aiv_swatch_1?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr=.%20Accessed%2020%20Aug.%202016.https://www.amazon.com/gp/video/detail/B086RXVVWF/ref=atv_dp_amz_det_c_UTPsmN_1_2https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Memphis_Three#Baldwin,_Echols,_and_Misskelley

Ep. 100: The West Memphis Three, pt. 1
In May 1993, three young boys went out to play and never came home. When their little bodies were discovered the next day, police and members of the community were so distraught, they looked for the only thing evil enough to commit such crimes: a Satanic cult. This week for our 100th episode, Hannah tells Katy the story of Stevie, Michael, and Chris, their disappearance, and how authorities ultimately (and eagerly) dumped all the blame on three teenagers: Damien, Jason, and Jesse. Find out why you should probably avoid the local Bojangles at night, why you should never bring your disruptive eight year-old to a polygraph test, and why being a little weird shouldn't be one of the reasons you are targeted by police. Buckle up, because this is just part one! Cut yourself a generous slice of cake, and settle in for this unsolved mystery! Sources: https://www.amazon.com/West-Memphis-Julie-Ann-Doan/dp/B00DHKXHBY/ref=tmm_aiv_swatch_1?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr=.%20Accessed%2020%20Aug.%202016.https://www.amazon.com/gp/video/detail/B086RXVVWF/ref=atv_dp_amz_det_c_UTPsmN_1_2https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Memphis_Three#Baldwin,_Echols,_and_Misskelley

Ep. 99: The Loch Ness Monster
What's lurking in the dark waters of the immense and mysterious Loch Ness? This week, due to some unforeseen events, Jarek brings Hannah a story from the Highlands of Scotland (or thereabouts.) That's right, the Partschs are talking about the infamous Loch Ness Monster! Is she a prehistoric beast, a seal, an eel, or just the product of an overactive imagination? Jarek and Hannah get into it all in this semi-impromptu episode. Special shoutout to Kyle, who introduced his lovely wife to the show, and who has issued a gaming-challenge to Jarek! Sources: https://www.britannica.com/topic/loch-nesss-monster-legendary-creature  https://www.livescience.com/26341-loch-ness-monster.html  https://www.history.com/.amp/topics/folklore/loch-ness-monster

Ep. 98: Bloody Mary
Have you ever stood in a dark bathroom and chanted “Bloody Mary” in the mirror, waiting for a demonic girl to appear behind you? If not, what the heck did you do at sleep overs? As promised, this week the girls cover something a touch lighter than real life vampire/cannibal/killers, and dive into the legend of Bloody Mary. Find out how young girls used to find their future husbands (or demons that would kill them), who might be hanging out in the bathroom with Moaning Myrtle, and why we should all just let people worship the way they want to and not burn them at the stake. Pour a nice beverage, take a deep breath, and settle in for a spooky story that won’t make you want to cut your ears off.  Join our Patreon (only $5 a month!) to see some episode-related bonus shenanigans!  Sources: https://allthatsinteresting.com/bloody-maryhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bloody_Mary_(folklore)https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2019/04/la-llorona-real-mexican-legend-curse-of-la-llorona-moviehttps://www.grunge.com/212016/the-legend-of-bloody-mary-explained/https://www.donquijote.org/mexican-culture/history/la-llorona/https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_I_of_England#Accessionhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Troxler%27s_fading

Ep. 97: The Vampire of Sacramento
Have you eaten today? Maybe hold off until you get through this episode. This week, Hannah regretfully tells Katy the story of Richard Chase, aka: The Vampire of Sacramento: a highly disturbed young man who did a bunch of really terrible things in 1976. Assume all the content and trigger warnings, and do not feel bad if you need to skip right over this one. It's rough.  So strap in, pour a strong drink or light a nice soothing candle, and "enjoy" this dark tale of horror.https://serialkillercalendar.com/The-Vampire-of-Sacramento-Richard-Chase.phphttps://www.crimemuseum.org/crime-library/serial-killers/richard-trenton-chase/https://thevampireproject.blogspot.com/2008/12/richard-trenton-chase-vampire-killer-of.htmlhttps://murderpedia.org/male.C/c/chase-richard.htmhttps://sacramento.newsreview.com/2021/08/13/revisiting-the-vampire-of-sacramento/

Ep. 96: The Wonnangatta Murders
In the remote outback of Australia in 1917, Jim Barclay lived a simple and modest life, tending cattle and managing the Wonnangatta homestead. Until one day, he didn't. This week, Hannah tells Katy about the mystery of the Wonnangatta murders, a pair of killings that baffled Australians then, and now. The girls talk about whether "surly" is a good descriptor for Katy and her future as the neighborhood witch, why Thelma the horse was running around naked, and most importantly, why was there strychnine in the pepper?!? (Spoiler alert, we actually never resolve that one.) Get your detective hats out for this one, and take notes for this Unsolved Mystery! Sources: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wonnangatta_murdershttp://gazette.slv.vic.gov.au/images/1918/V/general/70.pdfhttps://harryshut.net/wonnangatta-murders/https://www.sydneytheatre.com.au/magazine/posts/2020/september/Wonnangatta-true-story

Ep. 95: The Devil's Handwriting
Today there’s Ouija boards, seances, and EVP’s. But back in the day, the Devil had to get a little more creative if he wanted to communicate his totally original thoughts. One time in particular, he allegedly possessed a 17th century nun and made her write a letter in a made up language. This is a classic case of “was it demonic possession, or mental illness?” with a side of, “was it witchcraft and sorcery, or bored lesbians being quarantined during a pandemic?” This one is fun and weird, and if you stay till the end, you’ll get to hear the gross behind the scenes realities of marriage (someone please tell Jarek to stop eating spicy foods!)  Sources:  https://medium.com/lessons-from-history/sister-maria-wrote-an-evil-letter-dictated-by-satan-365915633bb3https://www.livescience.com/60442-possessed-nun-letter-deciphered.htmlhttps://tribune.com.pk/story/1501913/coded-letter-written-italian-nun-possessedhttps://www.vice.com/en/article/4354zp/these-occult-exorcists-say-the-catholic-church-makes-demons-worsehttps://absolutehistory.com/s/1676-possessed-nun-message-devil-letter-translated?utm_source=fark&utm_medium=website&utm_content=link&ICID=ref_fark&as=799&bdk=0https://mysteriousuniverse.org/2021/05/the-strange-case-of-sister-maria-and-the-mysterious-letter-from-the-devil/https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loudun_possessions

Ep. 94: Shadow Figures
Have you ever seen a dark, shadowy figure out of the corner or your eye? Or woken up in the middle of the night to find yourself staring at a black mass standing over your bed? How about the silhouette (or full apparition) of a tall man wearing a wide brimmed hat? If you have, you're not alone, and this week, Hannah is telling Katy all about this chilling phenomena known as Shadow Figures. Find out why the name "Shadow People" has been trademarked, why you should call your local optometrist if you start seeing sudden floaters or shadows in your vision, and why it is pretty likely that you will experience sleep paralysis at some point in your life.  Turn your lights on, and buckle up for this spooky episode!  Sources: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shadow_personhttps://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/shadow-boxing/201307/shadow-peoplehttps://heidihollis.com/https://www.iheart.com/podcast/1119-darker-side-of-life-75527579/?keyid%5B0%5D=Dark%20Becomes%20Light&pname=podcast_profile&sc=widget_sharehttps://stanfordhealthcare.org/medical-conditions/sleep/nighttime-sleep-behaviors/sleep-paralysis.htmlhttps://www.webmd.com/sleep-disorders/sleep-paralysishttps://www.liveabout.com/shadow-people-2596772https://brickthology.com/2020/10/25/shadow-people/https://brickthology.com/2020/10/13/tall-man-spirit/https://www.nytimes.com/2015/05/02/us/pine-ridge-indian-reservation-struggles-with-suicides-among-young-people.htmlhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wounded_Knee_Massacrehttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jinn#Appearancehttps://thoughtcatalog.com/christine-stockton/2014/06/17-people-on-their-real-experiences-with-a-shadow-person/

Ep. 93: The Wineville Chicken Coop Murders
Happy 2022! We are starting the New Year off by talking about the story that inspired the 2008 movie, Changeling, an absolutely incompetent police department, reasons you could involuntarily commit women to psych wards in the 1920’s, and also an evil psychopathic young man who abused and murdered young boys on his farm. Hannah teaches Katy that all 8-12 year old boys look generally the same, and that the only reliable source on who they are is a handwriting expert and the Illinois school system. And Katy teaches Hannah when the FBI was invented and whether or not kidnapping is a federal crime (spoiler alert: not the 1940’s, and we actually never looked it up.) It's a doozy, and takes a ton of twists and turns, but hang in there!  There are plenty of drinking game opportunities in this one, whether you’re drinking wine (Hannah), bubbly water (Katy), or anything in between!
