Welcome to The Surveyor Hub Podcast
I’m your host Marion Ellis. One of the questions I often get asked is what is the Surveyor Hub? And on one level it’s just a Facebook group, it’s a podcast. I see it as a way to feel part of a world and industry that can often leave us feeling, well a little bit isolated. And I feel that too. As a woman of a certain age, a female surveyor with a background in residential defect and valuation claims I’ve often felt a little out on a limb. I run a small club for owners of surveying businesses and we get a lot from the power of connection - be it learning something new we can implement in our businesses or having a chat in one of our socials because we have not spoken to anyone all day.  And I really believe that the power of human connection has led us to do the work we do as surveyors from inspecting properties to finance and spreadsheets - the work of a surveyor is wide and varied. At its heart though is whatever shape and form it is, we help offer security and a roof over someone's head, safe, warm and dry. And that is really what this podcast is about, I chat to surveyors and those working in the industry about why we do what we do, lessons learned along the way, highs and lows and the fun stuff too. I have a tendency to get things off my chest so you’ll also hear me talk about some of the things that matter to me and my own experiences such as being diagnosed with ADHD, being a visible female role model and all that comes with that and chasing that elusive work-life balance as a parent. My business is called Love Surveying which tells you how enthusiastic I am about the people and our work - and I did toy with the idea of changing the name of this podcast, but well, it felt like another thing to do, and we’ve been around for a little while now.  You can keep in touch with me in several ways - we have https://www.facebook.com/groups/the.surveyor.hub.love.surveying (The Surveyor Hub Facebook) community group, you can sign up to join https://lovesurveying.com/contact/ (my email list), you can follow me on https://www.instagram.com/love_surveying/ (social media), you can rate, https://g.page/r/CWq5vlpojQfNEB0/review (review) and follow this podcast and tune in whenever and wherever you want. You can even https://www.buymeacoffee.com/TheSurveyorHub (Buy Me a Coffee). Please do drop me a note or voice mail anytime, I’d love to hear from you, and I hope you enjoy this podcast. xXUkFCXNXcqXSqf7kaGk

080 The Love Surveying Mastermind
The life of a surveyor can be a lonely one. Who do you talk to when you need to get advice, guidance and support that you need? Trying to work out what's important to you can have you going round in circles when you only got yourself to discuss it with. It's so easy to get overwhelmed and an overwhelmed mind does nothing.  But it doesn't have to be that way. That's why I created The Love Surveying Mastermind, for surveyors who love what they do. 079 Thatched Properties and Fire Safety Concerns
Recently Marion had a conversation with Neil Hewitt and Charles Chalcraft about surveying thatched properties and fire safety concerns involved in those surveys. He specialises in older period properties, in particular local Suffolk timber frame and thatched houses. Charles Chalcraft is a retired master thatcher who is trained as a home inspector. He now trains property professionals including surveyors how to survey properties with thatched roofs. He specialises in building surveys on older properties - cob and stone rubble that are thatched. He is also the technical advisor to the Devon and Cornwall Master Thatchers Association. What we cover:  - How thatched roofing begin in the UK - Why thatched properties are appealing and what are the downsides? - Who is qualified to survey thatched properties - The causes of thatch fire and what homeowners can do about it Connect with Neil Hewitt:  - Website http://www.neilhewittsurveyor.co.uk/  - LinekdIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/neil-h-b5517021/  Connect with Charles Chalcraft:  - LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/charles-chalcraft-3849b520b/ - Website: http://www.thatchedhomeinspector.co.uk/ Connect with Marion Ellis: - LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/marion-ellis-love-surveying-surveyor-hub - Instagram https://www.instagram.com/love_surveying/ - Facebook https://www.facebook.com/love_surveying/ - Email marion@lovesurveying.com   Resources: - Devon & Cornwall Master Thatcher Association: https://www.devonandcornwallmta.co.uk/ - The East Anglia Master Thatchers Association: https://www.eamta.co.uk/ - National Society of Master Thatchers: https://nsmtltd.co.uk/ (https://nsmtltd.co.uk/) - National Farmers Union (NFU): https://www.nfuonline.com/ (https://www.nfuonline.com/) - Historic England: https://historicengland.org.uk/ - Join the monthly Surveyors Get Visible Masterclass https://calendly.com/love-surveying/surveyors-get-visible-masterclass   - Sign up for The Surveyor Hub newsletter: https://lovesurveying.com/contact/  - Support The Surveyor Hub https://www.buymeacoffee.com/TheSurveyorHub - Join The Surveyor Hub Community https://www.facebook.com/groups/the.surveyor.hub.love.surveying

078 Attracting the Right People
The title “Attracting the Right People” may sound a little bit misleading, but don't worry, I am not going to share dating tips with you. This piece is about engagement and visibility. You need to wave your flag high and proud to get attention. But then you've also got to hold the conversation consistently to be credible. This applies whether it's at your place of work or running your own business. If you find you’re getting something other than meaningful engagement, take a long hard look at what you're putting out there.  What We Cover: - Talking about your values and why it matters - Defining and promoting your expertise to clients - The importance of self-awareness - Finding your why and listening to clients and peers Connect with Marion Ellis: - LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/marion-ellis-love-surveying-surveyor-hub - Instagram https://www.instagram.com/love_surveying/ - Facebook https://www.facebook.com/love_surveying/ - Email marion@lovesurveying.com    Resources:  - How Great Leaders Inspire Action by Simon Sinek https://youtu.be/u4ZoJKF_VuA - “Start with Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action” by Simon Sinek https://www.amazon.com/Start-Why-Leaders-Inspire-Everyone/dp/1591846447  - Join the monthly Surveyors Get Visible Masterclass https://calendly.com/love-surveying/surveyors-get-visible-masterclass   - Sign up for The Surveyor Hub newsletter: https://lovesurveying.com/contact/  - Support The Surveyor Hub https://www.buymeacoffee.com/TheSurveyorHub - Join The Surveyor Hub Community https://www.facebook.com/groups/the.surveyor.hub.love.surveying

076 Pricing Your Surveys for Profit
Do you know what it costs to run your business? Perhaps you earn enough, you do all right, and don't think it's right or possible to charge a higher fee than you already do. Either way, every business has an ebb and flow when it comes to money. Whether you do project work and have a plan and budget, or you work harder some months of the year, make hay while the sun shines as they say. Balancing cash flow in your business isn't always easy. If you haven't come across the Profit First method, then do your research. In many ways, making a profit is not rocket science. You just need to earn more money than you're spending. If you're not, there are two ways to tackle it: cut back to become more efficient or make more money through doing more or charging more. What We Cover: - What it costs to run your business - Deciding your work hours and earnings for Profit - How to price your services as an expert Connect with Marion Ellis: - LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/marion-ellis-love-surveying-surveyor-hub - Instagram https://www.instagram.com/love_surveying/ - Facebook https://www.facebook.com/love_surveying/ - Email marion@lovesurveying.com   Resources:  - Sign up for The Surveyor Hub newsletter: https://lovesurveying.com/contact/  - Support The Surveyor Hub https://www.buymeacoffee.com/TheSurveyorHub  - Join The Surveyor Hub Community https://www.facebook.com/groups/the.surveyor.hub.love.surveying
