S1E7 James Sharpe - A Writer’s Journey
SHOW NOTES:James brings a subtle, nuanced and wise beyond his years approach to directing; he understands the power of narrative. A very cinematic storyteller, James is not afraid of holding on the moment and exploring the smaller narratives, which feel inexplicably big.Growing up in a small East Midlands town surrounded by grand rolling landscapes and interesting characters, James quickly developed a love for making images from his imagination and writing creative, reflective fiction. A love of photography and script writing followed, evolving into writing and directing. This background gives him a highly visual and photographic approach to his narratives, a natural feel for the cinematic from someone who dreams cinema. Every story he creates comes from a personal place, giving him a personal engagement and natural empathy with his stories and characters.James' shorts have played theatrically and at festivals all over the world. After completing his award winning graduation film the dreamlike ...A Man Walks Into A Bar he received funding in 2006 with the UK Film Council and Wellington Films for the dark comedy Nose Hair. In 2007 he wrote and directed the reflective Dead Moments, also supported by Wellington Films. In 2008 he directed and co-wrote the imaginative tale Fine Art funded by locals arts and distributed over the BBC Big Screen Network. In 2010 he directed the 24 hour competition winner The Curious Incident of Doug in the Night Time, written by Richard Preddy, writer of Channel 4's Green Wing and Campus. In the same year he wrote, directed, and self-funded Notes, an emotional “silent†film set somewhere in the future.Between making shorts James has directed music videos for some of the indie worlds most loved bands and artists, and has directed commercials for Post-It, the Co-Op, Sky, Jaguar, Vodafone, and the interactive trailer for Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones for Paramount Pictures / Ichi Worldwide.Outside of his personal projects he's directed primetime television comedy for BBC3 directing sketches for series 6 and 7 of Russell Howard's Good News, and the comedy/drama pilot Stains.James' latest short FIBS is funded by Creative England and executive produced by 2AM Films, about a teenage girl lost in a fantasy, who will say anything to try and win back her older ex-boyfriend.He is also currently working on his first feature film, also called FIBS, loosely based on the short.Anatomy Of Story - John Truby The Writer’s Journ
