#489: Back to Mono by Phil Spector (with our special guest, Andrew Hickey!)
As we take a break from releasing weekly episodes in order to record our new season, we have a special bonus episode for you!  Before Rolling Stone magazine released their new 2020 greatest album list, we recorded a review of Phil Spector's Back to Mono compilation album with our very special guest, Andrew Hickey from the incredible podcast, A History of Rock Music in 500 Songs!   This deserves some explanation:  On the previous list, this album was number 65, but before we got a chance to release our review, it showed up on the new list way down at number 489!  So, instead of waiting several years to get to release the episode we made this summer with Andrew, we have decided to give it to you now - a future-episode from season 28!  Enjoy!  As a reminder, you can find our favorite songs from the RS500 on our Spotify playlist right here - we'll be updating it as we go with our favorite songs from each album! You can check out Rolling Stone's new 2020 list right here. We'd love it if you would review us in your favorite podcast app, and while you're at it, give us a like on our Facebook Page or Instagram, follow us on Twitter, and send us a message if you have any comments or questions. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/soundlogic/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/soundlogic/support

#20: Kid A by Radiohead (with our special guest, Cam Denison!)
We've got another brand new review for you from the list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time! This one is our first review of a Radiohead album, their incredible Kid A record, which comes in here at #20 on the 2020 list. We're thrilled to once again be joined by a guest. Cam Denison was recommended to us by our friend and former guest, Kelli Dowd, who was with us back on our review of At Fillmore East, by The Allman Brothers. As a reminder, you can find our favorite songs from the RS500 on our Spotify playlist right here - we'll be updating it as we go with our favorite songs from each album! #19: To Pimp A Butterfly by Kendrick Lamar (with our special guest, Darryl Foster!)
At only 5 years old, Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp A Butterfly is the newest album we reviewed so far, coming in at number 19 on the Rolling Stone list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.   As relevant as it was the year it was released (and perhaps even more so now), this is an album which covers a multitude of issues. Our good friend,  Darryl Foster, has agreed to join us once again, just 2 episodes after helping us tackle album #17.  Darryl brings his experience and insight to the conversation as we tackle many issues including, but not limited to, racial tension, explicit language, drugs, slavery, body issues, the justice system... just to name a few! We've chosen to flip the switch on our explicit content warning, primarily based on the music in the background, but also our frank conversation. Thanks for your consideration! As a reminder, you can find our favorite songs from the RS500 on our Spotify playlist right here - we'll be updating it as we go with our favorite songs from each album! You can check out Rolling Stone's new 2020 list right here. #18: Highway 61 Revisited by Bob Dylan
AT LEAST ONE HIGHER! The long-running joke on our podcast was that the 2012 list had Dylan's Highway 61 album way too high when they ranked it in the #4 spot. It fell slightly on the Rolling Stone list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time to this place at #18. So what did we think about these changes? Listen to hear our reflections, revisiting Highway 61 Revisited, and then stick around for another throwback episode.  As a reminder, you can find our favorite songs from the RS500 on our Spotify playlist right here - we'll be updating it as we go with our favorite songs from each album! #17: My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy by Kanye West (with our special guest, Darryl Foster!)
The newest album we've ever reviewed (at least for a few episodes) is Kanye's iconic My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, coming in at number 17 on the Rolling Stone list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. This album is only 10 years old, and was created by someone who recently ran for President of the United States of America! So what did we think?  We're thrilled to be joined by Darryl Foster, someone who grew up in the same time as this album release, and provides insight into this creative work of art, as well as a very important conversation around language and the "N-word" in rap and hip hop music. For that reason, we do occasional feature music that may not be seen as age-appropriate for everyone. #16: London Calling by The Clash (with our special guest, Dustin Wood!)
Punk music changed how popular music was consumed, and The Clash's London Calling changed what people thought about punk. This album has moved from #8 to #16 on the new 2020 Rolling Stone list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Find out what we think about this shift, and join us as we revisit our review with our friend Dustin Wood! #14: Exile on Main Street by The Rolling Stones
Were The Rolling Stones in the old 2012 top 10 simply because of their name, or is there another good reason to have Exile on Main Street on this list? We mull that over, and the shift from number 7 on the 2012 list down to number 14 on on new 2020 Rolling Stone list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Thriller has shifted up slightly from #20 on the 2012 list to #12 here in 2020. When we originally reviewed this episode we were joined by the incredible and musically talented Ronnie Burrage (who happens to know the Thriller girl from the video!). We have made it through the first 10 albums of Rolling Stone Magazine's new list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time!  What better way to celebrate #10 than with a brand new review, our second on this list.  We knew we couldn't do it alone, so we invited our friends, Rachel Burkholder and Susannah Kiernan, to help us discuss this iconic album from Lauryn Hill. #9: Blood on the Tracks by Bob Dylan (with our special guest, Chris Clements!)
It's classic episode time again! Bob Dylan's Blood on the Tracks is now the highest ranking Dylan album on the new 2020 Rolling Stone list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. We know there's lots to say about this shift - if you'd like to send us a message about that, please do so! #8: Purple Rain by Prince and the Revolution (with our special guest, Glen Guyton!)
Happy Halloween!  When the 2003 issue of Rolling Stone originally listed the 500 greatest albums of all time, the iconic soundtrack to the movie Purple Rain came in at number 72. In 2012 the album had fallen slightly to number 76. The new 2020 Rolling Stone list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time pushes this Prince album all the way up into the top 10 to the number 8 spot!  Since Mike and Ben didn't grow up listening to this album, we brought back our friend Glen Guyton as our guest, who originally joined us for our review of Public Enemy's It Takes A Nation of Millions. Glen is the Executive Director of Mennonite Church USA, and in addition to his appreciation for church and theology, he loves culture and music and grew up with Prince's music. He's the perfect guest for today's episode!
