We also publish a new quote every morning at 7 AM on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. Topics This Week: In our Business Section: Business Learning In our Website Development Section: Video SEO In our Social Media Marketing: Facebook Communities Business Section Resources mentioned: LinkedIn Learning Team Treehouse Udemy  Teachable Ann Handley's book called Everybody Writes  Amazon Fire HDX  This is Marketing by Seth Godin Primal Branding by Patrick Hanlon, How to talk to anyone, anytime, anywhere by Larry King Meditation and Mindfulness by Andy Puddicombe   Website Development Section Resources Mentioned Google Chrome Keywords Everywhere TubeBuddy  Answerthepublic.com    Social Media Marketing Section Resources Mentioned Tribes by Seth Godin. Seth said a tribe is “a group of people connected to one another, connected to a leader and connected to an idea” "to become a tribe people need only a shared interest and a way to communicate" Facebook Groups  what type of group do you want to have: Public, Closed and Secret a Public group anyone can find the group, see who’s in it and what they post A Closed group anyone can find the group and see who runs it. Only members can see who’s in it and what they post A Secret group only members can find the group, see who’s in it and what they post  if you have chosen a closed group you can ask up to three questions of prospective members requiring answers for consideration for joining a group you also can establish rules for the group and should to ensure that everyone feels safe to share ideas in the group if people can’t follow the rules, eject them so that the group, by and large, won’t suffer you can also determine the level of approval things require before they are posted in the group there are a number of categories for the groups and depending on the one you choose can offer additional elements for example, we have an entrepreneurs group called Reserved Parking.  so our group category is social learning which allows us to have different units which we use as subject areas so we can have a unit dedicated to Local SEO and one dedicated to YouTube so members can focus in on the areas they are most concerned with in building their business Conclusion: We want to close out every show with this thought. The Social Forge Episode 10: Computer Apps, Explainer Videos and Twitter for your Business
I want to begin by apologizing to our listeners this week. Our goal is always to produce and load a show for Thursday morning but we also try to do some research into our topics each week and with our work on our Local SEO Guide, Meet Your Community it pushed the production of the show back a day or so. So hopefully we will be back on track for next week. We are also trying to find some Local SEO experts to bring onto the show and will hopefully have that in a future episode. If you have been listening to our podcasts we like to start each episode with an inspiring quote from an entrepreneur or thought leader from around the world. This Weeks Inspiring Quote is attributed to Zig Ziglar who said: “If people like you, they’ll listen to you, but if they trust you, they’ll do business with you.” If this is your first time joining us on The Social Forge and you are looking for some inspiration, you can go to the SocialMediaWright website, we will have a link in the show notes and look for the menu button marked inspiration. We have collected between 100-200 quotes from business leaders and entrepreneurs in a great graphic image that you can download or share on social media. We also publish a new quote every morning at 7 AM on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. Topics This Week: In our Business Section: Computer apps to help your business In our Website Development Section: Explainer Videos In our Social Media Marketing Section: Twitter for your Business Business Section if you have ever worked in a service business that services multiple clients where your organization performs multiple services like an accounting firm, legal firm, engineering company or a consultant then you are familiar with time sheets the purpose of a time sheet is to account for the various activities that you perform during the day on or for your clients so as an example you may have 5 consulting clients and for any one client, you could work on website development, social media strategy, facebooks ads, citation submissions so your Tuesday comes along and you spend 3 hours on client 1 working on citation submissions, then you spend 2 hours working on client 2 for Facebook ads and spend the last 2.5 hours of your day working on client 3’s website development the purpose of the timesheet is to bill your clients for the actual time worked during the day by having a list of categories it advised your clients where you have spent your time when they get your invoice for $1200 in my early days of accounting, we did paper timesheets as that was the norm fast forward to today there are companies that are offering timesheets via the computer/internet so if you are a business that lives on timesheets I want you to check out a couple of sites. the first site is one that I found a few years ago and I have used them for a while. The website is called Toggl. Located at toggl.com we will have a link in the show notes. they have three plans to check out, they have a free plan and two paid versions, so you can try the free version and see how you like it a couple of things I loved about toggl, is they have an app for the iPhone which makes it really convenient. you start on a project and identify the client and the task you are performing and press start. A timer starts to record your activity. when you are done, simply stop the timer and you have an accurate account of the time for that task. then simply start a new task when you are ready and turn on the timer. with their paid version you can add in billable rates, have a greater export function, manage projects and teams so I would definitely suggest you check out their free version to see if their product is something for you. now a product that I haven’t used but I think worth mentioning here is another timesheet program called TSheets by QuickBooks T Sheets has a free version for one user and then moves into a paid structure for more than one user. they have a mobile app to also help you log your work when you are not near your desktop one of the reasons I like the idea of T Sheets is it's integrated into QuickBooks. So if you are using QuickBooks as your accounting solution as you are recording billable time worked on your clients those details are going to pass into your accounting system ensuring complete records and saving you time from having to manually create entries afterwards from a company perspective, the GPS components can show you where your team is and you can approve timesheets from the mobile app employees can use the app to clock in and clock out the app can send reminders at the end of your defined work day if members of your team haven’t clocked out. so if you are in a business like a consulting practice like us where you need to track your time worked on various clients than check out Toggl and T Sheets to help simplify your process. Website Development over the past several weeks we have shared with you the importance of creating video we have included a discussion on the different equipment you can use to create videos last week we talked about getting your business set up on YouTube this week we want to talk about another type of video that is very popular and you should consider whether it is something that you can incorporate into your business these types of videos are often referred to as Explainer Type Videos what an Explainer type video does is it explain how to do something one of the big searches on a site like YouTube could be how to do x or how to do y. If you have encountered a problem with a piece of software or were taking a tutorial on how to use a piece of software those videos were explainer videos as they were explaining something. one type of explainer type videos that you can look at are whiteboard videos. these videos will often show a hand drawing animation with a little story and perhaps some music so you can go to a site like Fiverr and look for someone who does whiteboard animation you will have to create a script for what you are trying to show or explain in your videos you can also obtain a license to various pieces of whiteboard software to do the animations for yourself we have an annual license to a product called VideoScribe and it allows us to drag various pieces of animation onto the whiteboard, add some text and then we move along a sequence to tell our story going from left to right. when we are done we add some music, a logo and then we have a video that we can upload to various social media channels now if you want to do a video that teaches or shows someone how to do something on your desktop then there are a few pieces of software that you can look at to help you accomplish this the two pieces I would suggest you check out to do what is referred to as screencasting are 1) ScreenFlow which is available for the Mac and 2) Camtasia which is available for the Mac and the PC. we use ScreenFlow for capturing our desktop on video as an example, we have been publishing videos to both YouTube, Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter for our Local SEO Video Guide Meet Your Community that we are working on these are a series of videos that explain how to set your business up for Local SEO. in a recent video we walk our viewers through the process of verifying your Google My Business account and the viewer can see where to enter their postcard code from Google and watch what happens when it is approved, we were then prompted to add a cover photo to our Google My Business account and we captured that on video so everything that appears on the screen is captured by the software including our narrations you can then edit the video, blurring out sensitive information like when you enter a password, adding in things to draw people’s attention to, correcting errors because no one needs to see this. So for us, this overall video is comprised of different segments: Segment 1 is our opening segment with me shot with a green screen behind me which will be replaced with a town downtown main street Segment 2 is our breakaway clip that shows our organization Segment 3 back to me to introduce the explainer video Segment 4 is the edited explainer video showing how to verify the account Segment 5 back to me Segment 6 is the wrap-up Then the video is encoded and sent off to various social media channels for consumption. So if you have something that you have on your website that you want to explain to people how to use, if you produce software and want to showcase it, if you have a slide presentation that you want to turn into a movie these are different things you can do if you have a webcam on your computer you can also integrate webcam footage into your explainer videos so that people will see you as you explain something one of the tips someone recommended to me recently with Facebook video was to aim to have your video 3 minutes in length. that might sound like a challenge if you are thinking about standing in front of a camera but when you are explaining something on a screen capture you can easily achieve that time. for our short verification video with adding our cover page to Google My Business, we ended up with 20 minutes of video footage. when we edited everything down to just the footage that we want our visitors to see, we were at around 4 minutes so if you are still camera shy but want to produce video content, look to see how you can use explainer videos to give you something to create and share with your audience. Social Media Marketing Section if you have been following our show from the beginning, you know at this point we have talked about Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, and YouTube last week the one we have yet to discuss on the show is Twitter Twitter is an interesting platform as everything is in real time, as you are tweeting people are seeing your tweets instantly companies can use Twitter as a customer support tool and I see many organizations with help in their Twitter handle Twitter was created in March 2006 and tweets were origin

The Social Forge Episode 9: Office Space, Images and YouTube for Business
If you have been listening to our podcasts we like to start each episode with an inspiring quote from an entrepreneur or thought leader from around the world. This Weeks Inspiring Quote is attributed to Elizabeth Gilbert who said: “Stop wearing your wishbone, where your backbone ought to be.” If this is your first time joining us on The Social Forge and you are looking for some inspiration, you can go to the SocialMediaWright website, we will have a link in the show notes and look for the menu button marked inspiration. We have collected between 100-200 quotes from business leaders and entrepreneurs in a great graphic image that you can download or share on social media. We also publish a new quote every morning at 7 AM on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.   Topics This Week: In our Business Section: Office Space In our Website Development Section: Images In our Social Media Marketing: YouTube for Business Business Section one of the first things you need to think about when starting a business is where will your business operate if you are planning on opening a retail location or a restaurant where a physical address is required to sell your wares or your food and beverages this is paramount to getting your business off the ground the old expression location, location, location rings true as you need to look at facilities that meet your needs, are affordable and will generate sufficient traffic that will hopefully lead to sales. You also need to assess what is around you and amenities like parking that may be a necessity to the success of your business if you are a business that provides a service like a consulting practice, or design practice or similar type industries where you don’t offer an opportunity for people to walk in to purchase your products a home office may be an excellent starting point for you Some of our biggest companies can trace their roots to starting in a garage so there is nothing wrong with using a home office. things you may want to think about for your home office, is do you have the space to support your business operations, where do you plan on meeting clients, at their location, at a mutual location like a coffee shop or will you have them over to your home do you have a team of staff that will need to work out of your home do you have any concerns about representing your business out of your home, some people do and some people don’t and that is something that you will need to think about you have heard the old expression that perception is reality, is that something that concerns you? would you be just as inclined to hire an attorney who worked out of their car as you would in hiring an attorney that works out of an office tower, just something to think about? if you are planning a home office and want some ideas or are looking to make improvements in your current home office you can check out the Pinterest board Home Offices for SocialMediaWright. We have over 650 pins related to home offices and home office organization. you would be surprised what some people can do with bull clips or have you considered using lego brings to organize things, some people have we have pins of large home offices, small home offices, home offices under the stairs and home offices found in closets, so if you are looking for inspiration check that out. the other end of the spectrum is renting a full-size office suite close to amenities but your annual monthly lease cost could be several thousands of dollars per month, which for a start-up could be a heavy financial burden to bear especially if the office may not be used to full capacity for some time, as it can take a while to secure a client base for a long time these were the two extremes either work from home or rent office space on a yearly basis now, fortunately, there is a third option which has been growing in popularity over the past several years that is called co-working so if you are not familiar with the idea, think of a hotel. A hotel room provides you with a place to sleep, to work, to relax, to use a shower and you can rent it for the day, a week, a month and some people have actually lived out of a hotel room Co-working is kind of similar but for a work environment With Co-working, you can rent a desk by the day or by the week. You can have a different desk or a dedicated desk and many co-working environments also offer offices to rent varying the prices based on square footage and whether the office comes with a window. Most Co-working environments offer meeting rooms that can be rented by the hour and offer a host of amenities including photocopying, beverages and a place to relax. There are a number of major organizations in the co-working space and a number of independents so if this is something that you are interested in you can look for co-working environments in your city or town, look at the prices and take a tour they will be more expensive than your home office but far less expensive then renting office facilities on an annual basis the locations also provide a professional appearance which depending on the services that you are offering could be a reason to think about them, remember that perception thing. on a previous episode, we talked about Local SEO and I really believe it will become even more important as more small businesses start to utilize it. we are working on our own Local SEO Guide and Checklists called Meet Your Community and one of the things you will find with Google My Business when it comes to your address, is they want a location where people can come and meet you, which is one of the reasons they likely discourage the use of a PO Box. if you plan on taking advantage of Local SEO and you weren’t comfortable listing a home address, a co-working environment may be something you want to think about. I’ve worked in co-working environments and we are shopping for one currently for SocialMediaWright. Beyond the office spaces they provide, many organizations in the co-working space have networking events to help your business grow, so that’s something else to think about.   Website Development you have heard the expression that a picture is worth a 1,000 words most websites that I can think of are made of three types of elements: 1) text 2) pictures and 3) videos last week we talked about mobile platforms for your website and how speed is an important thing in the mobile user experience one of the things that you can do to help increase the speed of your website is looking at your images images can sometimes be very large in size when you download them from the web. If your website is only going to display an image at 1200 pixels wide and your image is 5000 pixels wide it won’t have a problem being displayed but the image itself is bigger than it needs to be which can cause the loading of the image to slow down your website things you may want to consider when developing your website is determining the maximum size for images to be displayed in the theme that you are working with and reduce the image size to correspond to that size to reduce the file size. if you are using a wordpress.org platform, look at plugins that optimize your images when they are uploaded to your media folder in WordPress. images often have various amounts of data buried in the image that has nothing to do with the rendering of the image using a plugin to optimize your image will help strip out this data making for a smaller image file without compromising on quality a program that we use for SocialMediaWright is called Imagify which works to optimize our images that we upload to the site. you can also set your website up so it lazy loads your images which means the images that can’t be seen on your webpage will only load when that portion of the website comes into view on the display screen. This can help with page speed loads. if you ran the Google Page Speed Insights we mentioned last week one of the suggestions might be using newer image compression methods that could play a role in reducing your image files sizes like JPEG2000, JPEG XR and WebP. -other options you can consider to work with your images and your website is deploying a content distribution network or CDN as they are often referred. What a CDN is, is a website with servers all over the world that have a copy of your website. That way when someone accesses your website, the images and the files are served to them from a server closer to them thereby increasing the speed of the download. when it comes to your images, you want to make sure the file size is as small as possible without impacting image quality or how you want it displayed on your website there are also options that you can choose with your website to determine how images will work on the site which can help increase the speed of the site. one of the other things that I want to mention when we talk about images but it has nothing to do with image loading but rather getting the most SEO value from your images you see I can show you a great picture of a lake and ducks on a lake and that is what you see, what a computer sees is a blank canvas. we are not at the point where a computer can determine what an image is all about but we can help them out with alt tags. alt tags also known as alt attributes is a line of text that can be added to an image to tell a computer what the picture is about. This is often a great place to tie your image back to your page or post when trying to optimize for your keywords so just a quick tip make sure you complete the alt tags on all your images.   Social Media Marketing at present, the single biggest search engine on the web is Google, probably no surprise there the second biggest is YouTube. People turn to YouTube to find answers to questions that they have and to watch videos of people showing them how to do something or to entertain them. we are going to talk about youtube today in a previous episode, we talked about some of the tools you can use

The Social Forge Episode 8: Business Cards, Mobile Websites and Pinterest for your Business
If you have been listening to our podcasts we like to start each episode with an inspiring quote from an entrepreneur or thought leader from around the world. This Weeks Inspiring Quote is from a Japanese proverb which says  “Fall seven times, stand up eight.” If this is your first time joining us on The Social Forge and you are looking for some inspiration, you can go to the SocialMediaWright website, we will have a link in the show notes and look for the menu button marked inspiration. We have collected between 100-200 quotes from business leaders and entrepreneurs in a great graphic image that you can download or share on social media. We also publish a new quote every morning at 7 AM on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. Topics This Week: In our Business Section: Business Cards, Paper and Virtual In our Website Development Section: Mobile Websites In our Social Media Marketing: Pinterest for your Business Business Section for every business I have been a part of from the start of my career, 25 years ago to current I have always had a business card a business card provides a nice summary of who you are, where do you work, what is your position, and how if I want to, do I get in contact with you such as phone number, email and your business web address business cards nowadays may also include a QR code, which is a square image that when scanned on a smartphone will take you to a place on the internet so a lot of companies will do it for your website, companies may also start to think about messaging app addresses as more people turn to text as a way to communicate. business cards also give you the opportunity to distinguish yourself from the rest. The days of plain white thick paper and black print have been replaced with colourful graphics and logos. for years business cards have been printed on a rectangular card in horizontal format but nowadays people are printing on a vertical rectangle, a square, circle or custom die cut in any shape you want, there are also mini cards if you want to demonstrate that you are concerned about the environment and conserving trees materials have also changed from plain white to plastic, metal, kraft paper your goal is to create a business card for your business that is memorable. Many printers will have online templates that you can use to create your business cards and if don’t see something that you like and you are familiar with software like Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator you can turn to a website like CreativeMarket and purchased a business card template in a design that you like. Add in the necessary information and upload it to a printers website. there are also a lot of great printers out there, so one thing you might consider is connecting with a local printer in your home town, its great to keep that business local and you can build a relationship as you may have other printing needs in the future if there is no one local or you want to check out the web, two companies I have used in the past are Vistaprint and Moo Cards. Each offers a lot of different options if you want to create a unique card for your business. So you have decided on a design, you have had them printed now what? Always keep some on you where ever you go, you never know where you are going to connect with someone and its a great opportunity to snag yourself a business card case. Most cases are going to be for the rectangle design so for an odd shape card you may have to look on the internet. a company that I have purchased a few cases from over the years is called Acme Studio and they have clever designs to ensure your business card case is not just like everyone else. Mine actually looks like a wall of bamboo with a tiki face on it. How many times have you seen that. The other thing you can do is look for equipment or apps for your smartphone that will catalog your business cards that you receive. so picture this, you are at your first trade conference or lecture with your peers and you come home with 50 or 60 business cards are you going to manually type them into your computer are you going to add them to your CRM system? options if your looking for a high speed scanner for your business you can check out the Fujitsu ScanSnap which is what we use, you could look at Dymo Cardscan or Corex Cardscan, the advantages of a stand alone scanner especially if it has a feed is you can stick a group of cards in and the card gets scanned and the information gets added to your contact software. apps you can check out ABBYY Business card reader, Evernote and CamCard which allow you to take a picture of the business card and the information will get added to your contacts you can also look at apps that will take the place of your business card by sending an electronic version of your card. If you get paperboards from Vistaprint they offer an app called MyCard. Also CamCard offers the ability to send business card information electronically in a future episode we will talk about contact management software, where you can store all the information you get from people’s business cards. Website Development would it be to far of a stretch if I told you we were becoming a mobile society if not already there what I mean by this is that everywhere I go, people walking around staring at their phones I’ve watched people walk into a busy intersection reading their phones oblivious to all of the cars and other people around them so as we talk about website development its important that you don’t forget that a significant portion of your visitors may be viewing your website on a mobile device now a few episodes ago we talked about creating a website and if you have gone to a website builder they likely already have something for a mobile platform and you may not have any ability to influence how your site is served up on mobile. if they offer options like AMP which we will talk about in a few minutes with respect to a Wordpress platform then you may want to add those additional options onto your website to enhance your users mobile experiences if you decided to use the wordpress.org framework like many people do, us included there are a number of things to consider when thinking about the mobile user. so one of the first things you will do once you have your Wordpress framework installed on your hosting provider is look for a theme that is going to reflect what your website will look like to your visitors you want to look for a responsive theme and this type of theme will adjust to the various different screen sizes that the theme may be viewed on now one of the things I want to caution you about is that you could find a framework and a theme that is ultrafast and renders great on mobile platforms - excellent right one of the things you will learn with Wordpress and we have previously talked about them is plugins which are little pieces of code that can increase the functionality of a website now years ago I used to run marathons and half-marathons and I want you to think of your website when you have the framework and the responsive theme as an ultrafast runner if your website was just made up of those components your users mobile experience might be great as we added more and more features to our website it could be like adding a 10 pound weight to that runner and then a 5 pound weight, and then a 7 pound weight and after awhile that ultrafast runners is carrying an extra 100 pounds of weight and doesn’t perform as well the reason I mention this is mobile users are going to be looking for websites that load fast, allows them to click a few buttons, may limit how much text they have to input to give them a great experience if your website is running slow on a mobile platform there is a chance you will lose that customer so one of the things you need to do for your website is run a speed test on your website to see how quickly things load and if there are any problems ensure you put a plan in place to address and fix Google has a tool called Page Speed Insights and we will have a link to it in the show notes enter your web address and check out the results it will first give you the results on mobile and then on a desktop which tells you which platform Google thinks is more important there are other sites you can use to check out your website speed which also may give you hints as to things you can improve upon like the GTMetrix website when we did the SocialMediaWright website which has a phenomenal framework and responsive themes but has a number of plugins we scored a 32 on mobile which is pretty bad. we made some changes to our site and Google now says we are a 59 which is in the average category but still has room to be worked on. Our site past all of Google audits and they offer some tips on how we can improve our score so lets talk about what we did for our Wordpress installation. We went to a company that we have worked with in the past and what they do is create strictly a mobile theme for tablets and smartphones with a lot of great mobile features the company we used is called WPTouch and if you find your mobile website speeds are slow and you can’t make enough changes to increase your scores have a look at them and companies like them so we made a couple of decisions about our mobile presentation, so unlike the desktop website that talks more about our business our mobile experience serves up first our blog posts so readers can consume our latest offerings and share them with their network our site then has links to various other pages on the website that are rendered with mobile in mind one of the features they offer is AMP which stands for Accelerated Mobile Pages which offers the user a better mobile experience by creating web pages that are fast and smooth loading we went with better typography making it easier for our mobile visitor to be able to read our content every mobile decision we make will be with the mobile user in mind because more than likely our customer may find us thr

The Social Forge Episode 7: Press Releases, Local SEO and Instagram
The Social Forge Episode 7 - Show Notes  If you have been listening to our podcasts we like to start each episode with an inspiring quote from an entrepreneur or thought leader from around the world. This Weeks Inspiring Quote is from Albert Einstein who is attributed for saying  “A person who never made a mistake, never tried anything new.” If this is your first time joining us on The Social Forge and you are looking for some inspiration, you can go to the socialmediawright website, and look for the menu button marked inspiration. We have collected between 100-200 quotes from business leaders and entrepreneurs in a great graphic image that you can download or share on social media. We also publish a new quote every morning at 7 AM on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. Topics This Week: In our Business Section: Press Releases and HARO In our Website Development Section: Local SEO In our Social Media Marketing: Working in the Instagram universe Business whether you read a newspaper in print as many have done for more than a century or you read your news online via your desktop or your smartphone the one thing that stays the same is the journalist. PT Barnum is attributed to saying “there’s no such thing as bad publicity” if you have the choice good publicity is preferable to bad publicity, bad publicity may be preferable to no one knowing you exist something that businesses have relied on for years to help increase their exposure and try to gain publicity for their business is the press release a press release is an announcement distributed to members of the press media this might be the opening of a new business, the launch of a new product or the appointment of someone to a new position in your company it consists of anything that you think is newsworthy in the hopes that a journalist might be working on a related story and will want to interview you or your story inspires a journalist to follow up with you and write about your news as an example yesterday morning we launched our own press release announcing the launch of this podcast The Social Forge we used a company that we have used before called PRWEB to distribute our press release and they offer several packages you can check out depending on who and where you want your press release distributed to as of yesterdays press release we had 5 episodes available for download and then an hour after our press release went out we had 6 and the one we are doing right now will be 7 our goal with our press release was to accomplish a few things: increase downloads of our podcast getting expanded coverage of our podcast which hopefully leads to more downloads putting out that we are looking for guests to interview within 2 hours of our release 120 individuals/organizations had picked up our story and the story had been viewed 421 times. we have also received press inquiries about doing an interview with an organization We use PRWEB and have for a number of years. If you look at domain authority and page authority alone their site has extremely high rankings so if they are linking back to your site it's going to be viewed positively by the search engines. there are a number of organizations out there that can do press releases for you so when you decide on one, look at the cost, who they deliver to and what type of SEO juice can they provide you if they are linking back to you. beyond just a press release there is a company that you need to check out and that is HARO HARO stands for Help A Reporter Out its a place which is free to join as a source that connects journalists working on a story with sources for their information so an example might be if a national US magazine was writing about the increase in podcast popularity and was looking for sources we would pitch to them that our experience with The Social Forge makes us a good resource for them if they agree, we do an interview together and hopefully, when they write their article they mention us and the social forge. Now if you were reading a national magazine and saw someone talking about the social forge podcast it might be enough for them to go and check us out and all it would have cost us is a little bit of our time you can even try using HARO as a journalist trying to source out podcast guests so as you work to grow your business awareness through the latest ideas in social media don’t forget methods that have existed for years as a way to get your message out about your business. Website Development one of the areas of SEO that is gaining in popularity is local SEO if you are a yoga studio in our home town of Milton, Ontario showing up in search results for yoga studios in Phoenix Arizona might be flattering but it's not likely that you are going to see an increase in class participants from it. there are a number of things you can do to ensure that you show up as a local yoga studio for your home town one of the things that you will want to check out is Google My Business Google My Business gives you the opportunity to update your profile and interact with your customers you can reflect your hours of operation, photos about your business or your products, manage reviews by your customers and these results integrate into Google Search and Maps imagine if I searched Google Maps for a yoga studio and it shows me your studio 5 minutes from my house, as I hover over it, I can see pictures of the studio, what hours your open and what people are saying about your studio. In that one snapshot, you have the chance to convince me that your studio is the only place for me to be. your Google My Business profile can show your average review score, a price range scale, with the ability for me to call you, check out your website or get directions to your location to get started with Google My Business, first sign up with a free account at Google My Business part of the validation process is they require a mailing address for your business to send you a postcard with a unique code that you can then verify on your account the postcard can take a couple of weeks to reach you and if you have a single location for your business I would urge you to jump on this early local SEO will take a while to gain traction so you want to get your profile set-up and verified when we talk about local SEO and Google My Business you are going to hear the terms NAP and Citation a lot NAP stands for Name, Address and Phone Number and you want to ensure this information is consistent all over the internet wherever you display your business. For example if we have a listing in one place that reads SocialMediaWright Inc. and a listing somewhere else that reads SocialMediaWright.com as the title while they both relate to the same place, Google will see it as two separate entries, so for us wherever we have our NAP listed we want to ensure that it reads SocialMediaWright Inc. a citation is any reference of your NAP on the internet, think of them as backlinks even though nothing has to be linking anywhere. Google as it scours and indexes the internet will take note of different areas that it notes a NAP entry and the more that you have the more validation that you are who you say you are. where can you get citations: business directories, the yellow pages and similar sites that give you the opportunity to provide your name, address, phone number are going to create a citation for Google My Business. Many of these sources will provide both a free and paid version of what they offer, but the free version should be sufficient to give you the citation you are looking for, though if any of the paid options are attractive to you, you may want to consider them. other items to consider are photos of your business in your Google My Business profile, it's suggested that you have three photos for the different sections that it offers. another thing that will drive your business in local SEO are reviews so encourage your customers to leave a review on your Google profile. you can check out your competition by going to Google and typing in their name and location so if we were Yogalific Yoga Studios, Milton Ontario and our primary competitor was LoveYoga, Milton, Ontario by entering their name in Google we should see what type of reviews they have been receiving or you can just type in yoga studios and your location to see the highest ranked yoga studios around you read the reviews and see how complete their information is other things you can check out is to make sure your website is using schema. Schema is tags or microdata that you can add to your HTML files to help the search engines find you and index you. This will help to capture your business name, address, phone number and other important information on your site that you want to capture. If you want to check your online information, a free tool that you can use is the Moz Local Checker if you don’t see any business results you may want to look at adding some with Google My Business and Facebook Social Media Marketing today we are going to move away from Facebook but to another social platform owned by Facebook and that is Instagram Instagram launched in October 2010 in April 2012 Instagram was acquired by Facebook Instagram is an application to share photographs uploaded by its users. Users have the ability to apply various filters and change the filter settings on their photographs to share memories on the platform you can now upload videos to the Instagram platform Instagram has become widely popular and if you have a product that is very visual than its a platform that you should consider being on if you don’t have a very visual product it is still a platform that you should be on but you may have to use your imagination about what type of photos about your business that you are going to post. when setting up your Instagram profile you will have the choice to have a personal account or a business account the advantage of the business account is: it provides access to

They allow you to collect expense information on the go and create a monthly expense report to be submitted to your business. They have a free version and a paid package version that offers integration with different accounting systems. They also have a section to record any travel mileage done in your vehicle for expense purposes. another app to consider for mileage tracking purposes is MileIQ which is a Microsoft company the app runs in the background recording your trips so you never forget to record your car travel you can label certain GPS points it records and it will populate those locations with a name in the future the app offers 40 free trips per month and if you need more you will have to look at one of their subscription packages. Website Development Section we talked about e-commerce platforms continuing our discussion from a few weeks ago on building a website we indicated that if you already have an existing WordPress website and you now want to integrate an e-commerce platform to your website then you need to check out WooCommerce. WooCommerce is run by the people behind WordPress so you know that it will work with your installation there are a number of WooCommerce extensions out there that provide payment functionality, marketing, store management and subscription services among other extensions. if you are just starting to think about building out an e-commerce solution then the WordPress installation mentioned above is one path you could take another path you should look at is from a company called Shopify. Shopify is one of the largest e-commerce platforms in the world and provides a complete integrated solution for your e-commerce platform offering you almost everything you could imagine they also have credit card swipes for your smartphone and systems for your store or pop-up store our t-shirt company WeirdMojo is built on the Shopify platform when looking at an e-commerce provider you should identify those things that are important to you somethings to consider are: helps manage your inventory displays your products for sale accepts payments invoice your customers provides shipping and tracking information to your customers integrates with social media channels to help promote your products. Social Media Marketing Section we talked about the various platforms that you can add video to and you can include video in your advertisements you can do your first video now, simply by turning on the video record button on your smartphone and capturing video and then upload it to your social media accounts this may be great to show behind the scenes footage of your office and things that go on during the day or introducing members of your team to your audience things to consider when shooting video are noise levels in the area you are filming you may want to find a quieter room if you are depending on the smartphone microphone to pick up your audio if filming outdoors be aware that outside noise could impact what your smartphone records for audio if this is a concern consider something like a lavalier microphone. these microphones are small and can pin to your shirt or jacket and plug into the earphone jack of your smartphone if you do not have a smartphone ear jack you may need an additional piece of equipment to be able to use your microphone there are Bluetooth wireless microphones on the market that you could also check out. We have not tried them yet so if you have any experience with them send us an email and let us know your thoughts on them. we mentioned that many people watch videos without the sound so you may want to caption your videos so they can read your message as the video plays you can also get captions done in foreign languages to allow your videos to appeal to a wider audience we mentioned we use Rev.com for this service. They do the caption files for us and then we upload the files to the video hosting platforms we use. we talked about using a green screen to create video magic the green screen we use comes in a case and is created by Elgato we talked about using a teleprompter if you are concerned with forgetting what you want to say on camera there are a number of teleprompter apps and peripheral equipment that you can purchase to use teleprompter apps on your smartphone with your camera the app we use is from a company called BigVu in the production of our Social Snippet videos. The app displays our script on the screen of the iPad and the front-facing camera on the iPad films us as we read the script you can also think about lighting especially if you are using a green screen because you want to avoid shadows on the green screen when you are filming we talked about software that you can use when editing your videos like Adobe Premiere. The software can be used to replace the green screen with a photo or video of your choice. we mentioned that we will have a detailed article on SocialMediaWright on Friday about creating videos with some screen footage of us using Adobe Premiere to replace the green screen behind us with a photo of a blackboard that we use in Social Snippets Conclusion if you are looking for a place to connect with other entrepreneurs trying to grow their business check out the SocialMediaWright Entrepreneurs Facebook Group Music for the show:  Free Music & Free Beer by Alex (c) copyright 2012 Licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution (3.0) license. http://dig.ccmixter.org/files/AlexBeroza/38167 Ft: Admiral Bob
