184_Is the Carnivore Diet Right for You with Dr. Anthony Chaffee
Should you go carnivore? If you ask that question to my next guest on the Smart Nutrition Made Simple Show, the answer would be a resounding yes. In today's podcast, I have the pleasure of chatting with my former rugby teammate turned neurosurgeon, Anthony Chaffee, MD. Dr. Chaffee is a fierce advocate of the carnivore diet and has completely eliminated all plant-based foods from his repertoire citing them as toxic and carcinogenic.  No fruits. No vegetables. No carbohydrates. No sugar. No artificial sweeteners. His diet consists entirely of meat and water, and he says he feels incredible. In today's conversation, we talk about: 👉 What the carnivore diet is 👉 The ideology that "plants are trying to kill you" 👉 Health benefits of a high-protein, high-fat, no-carb diet 👉 Assertions that carnivore is the best diet for optimal health and performance 👉Whether we need to be concerned with the carnivore diet from an LDL cholesterol standpoint 👉Types of diets most prevalent in the Blue Zones (areas where people have low rates of chronic disease and live the longest) 👉 Grass-fed vs. grain-fed beef 👉 How to get started on a carnivore diet Now, if you're familiar with me, you know that I am personally not a proponent of overly restrictive diets, particularly because they are really hard to stick with long-term. However, at BSL Nutrition we also believe that you need to develop the skills to become your own best nutrition detective, and for you that might be eating a high-fat, high-protein, low/no-carb carnivore-type diet.  I also want to be clear that it is my opinion that the carnivore diet is not necessarily any better than a plant-based diet or a paleo diet or a Whole30 diet. 182_The Importance of Strength Training for Fat Loss with BSL Nutrition Coach Dr. Dan Dodd
One of the first tools that we tend to gravitate towards when we’ve committed to a weight loss program is some sort of cardiovascular exercise, like jogging, peloton, boot camp classes, and/or some sort of circuit-style training. Many of us have this perception that if our heart rates are elevated, if we’re sweating, and we’re out of breath, then we’re burning more calories and therefore, burning more fat. Unfortunately that’s simply not the case. Indeed, we may be burning more calories during that specific bout of exercise, but of more significance is how our body actually responds to the increase in calorie expenditure. In today's Smart Nutrition Made Simple podcast, my buddy and BSL Nutrition Coach Dr. Dan Dodd and I thought it would be helpful to talk about the science behind why these types of cardio-intensive exercise routines are actually preventing us from losing weight, and why it's so important to shift our focus away from these types of workouts to progressive strength training.
