LII: "Sports in Ancient Greece" with Professor David Larmour and Joshua Kulseth
We are honored to be joined today by Professor David Larmour and returning guest Josh Kulseth for a discussion of combat sports, both ancient and modern. David H. J. Larmour (Ph.D. in Classical Philology, Univ. of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign) is a Paul Whitfield Horn Professor of Classics at Texas Tech and Honorary Professor of Classics, Ancient History & Archaeology at the University of Birmingham. He has particular interests in Greek athletics & the Roman arena, Greek and Roman satire, lyric poetry, narrative theory, and comparative literature. Although grounded in classical philology, his research takes in display and representation of the body in text and space; the ideological underpinnings of competition, exile, memory and nostalgia; and the re-imagining of the classical past in the modern era. He also looks at how the physical borders of empires, and their accompanying mental categories, shape our understanding of the past, who we think we are, and whither we are headed. XLVII: 'Poetry for Dummies' with Josh
We're back for the second episode this week, this time with our friend and jiujitsu training partner Josh. We talk about his pursuit of a Phd in Poetry and a whole hour's worth of literary knowledge that Cory and I are too dumb to understand. We had a great time learning about a path not taken (That's Robert Frost. He is also a poet from what I hear. See? I guess we aren't that ignorant). Episode 34: 'The Captain is Sleeping' with Guest Livingston McKenzie
Happy Late Thanksgiving Church Skippers! On this week's episode we were joined via video chat by our long time friend and podcast regular Livingston McKenzie. This was our first attempt at having a guest call in so please excuse any sound quality issues. If anyone has any feedback it would be much appreciated! We had a great conversion about the state of MMA and combat sports in general. The main topic of discussion was whether the UFC and MMA are in decline.
