SMF 023: Forgiveness and Children – with Nicole Lawrence
I've noticed that my kiddos sometimes attempt to justify their offenses rather than saying "I'm sorry", even when they know that an apology is necessary.  I've discussed this issue with them but could never come to a solid conclusion on the matter.  Over the past several weeks, I've had the opportunity to dig deeper into the topic of forgiveness.  As I reflected on this topic, the following question came to me: Why is it so difficult for my kiddos to say the words "I'm sorry, will you forgive me"? In a blog post "Why is it so hard to say I'm Sorry?" on NBC's Today's Health, Dr. Robi Ludwig writes: Apologizing can make some people feel vulnerable, or feel like they are in danger of losing their power and status. Others simply equate saying "I'm sorry" with admitting they're inadequate or incompetent, which makes admitting mistakes so much harder to do. Some people find saying they’re sorry humiliating. Perhaps they were criticized harshly by parents or other important people while growing up, and as a result avoid admitting mistakes because of the horrible feelings it brings up.   After reading this blog post and the research on forgiveness it became more evident to me that my kids hesitancy in asking for forgiveness came in part from my own hesitancy in asking for their forgiveness in times past and also because they felt like they might lose their overall feelings of power and adequacy.   I realized that in order to effectively teach my kiddos how to ask for forgiveness: I first needed to figure out why it was difficult for me to ask for forgiveness I needed to figure out why I felt inadequate and powerless in situations that required me to ask for forgiveness I needed to create a home environment that allowed my kiddos to feel so accepted that they did not feel like apologizing would be the end of their life as they know it We all needed to become more comfortable with simply saying the words "I'm sorry, will you forgive me" by practicing it even when no offense had occurred. So how do we teach our kiddos how to forgive? In a document "

SMF 022: Forgiveness in Marriage – with Nicole Lawrence
This podcast episode was a reading of one of my past blog posts that you can read here. Marriage requires a daily commitment to put your partner's needs before yours, a dedication to investing the time that is necessary to resolve conflicts and a willingness to extend forgiveness to each other when conflicts arise. In a study of couples in Great Britain and the United States, researchers on forgiveness in marriage concluded that:  The capacity to seek and grant forgiveness is one of the most important factors contributing to marital longevity and marital satisfaction. Husbands’ forgiveness predicted wives’ current reports of poorer conflict resolution. In contrast, wives’ forgiveness predicted husbands’ current reports of better conflict resolution.* It appears that wives’ forgiveness of husband transgressions is particularly important for conflict resolution in marriage both in the short term and over time.*   *Forgiveness: A Sampling of Research Results was originally published by the American Psychological Association Washington, DC: Office of International Affairs in 2006 and reprinted in 2008. Given the results of this research, it seems like our marriages will thrive when we forgive each other and disintegrate when we don't. Several years ago, my husband and I read the book "Love & Respect" by Dr. Emerson Eggerichs.   This books was fittingly subtitled "The Love She most Desires, The Respect He Desperately Needs" because Dr. Eggerichs believes that love and respect are the essential needs of wives and husbands, respectively.   In his chapter on Forgiveness, Dr. Eggerichs says the following about forgiveness. It is easier to forgive when you let go of the belief that your spouse intended evil* When you forgive him for being unloving, you give up your right to hold a grudge and be disrespectful in return* By forgiving you gain strength and freedom* Forgiveness comes when we see our own unrighteousness* Nothing is easier than judging, nothing is harder than forgiving* *Love and Respect published by Integrity Publishers Bentwood, TN in 2

SMF 021: Forgiveness in the Family – with Nicole Lawrence
Forgiveness is essential to the life of a family because sometimes our words and actions can hurt our family members.   It's difficult to maintain healthy relationships when our family members feel hostile to each other for intentional and unintentional hurts.  If we want to maintain healthy family relationships, then we should take the time to seek each others forgiveness and we must be willing to forgive the person who has wronged us.   So what does my family gain from forgiving each other or being forgiven?  According to a research paper titled Forgiveness: A Sampling of Research Results, forgiveness: aids psychological healing through positive changes * improves physical and mental health* restores a victim’s sense of personal power* helps bring about reconciliation between the offended and offender* promotes hope for the resolution of real-world intergroup conflicts* *Forgiveness: A Sampling of Research Results was originally published by the American Psychological Association Washington, DC: Office of International Affairs in 2006 and reprinted in 2008.   So does this mean that giving and receiving forgiveness should be a vital part of my interactions with my kiddos?   Absolutely! We all want the best for our families and are doing our best to raise our children to be loving to others.  We teach our kiddos that they should not hold grudges against others, but I suspect that many of us have never presented the benefits of possessing a forgiving spirit to our kiddos. Given the tremendous benefits of forgiving others, let's take a different approach to the topic of forgiveness.  Instead of just telling our kiddos that holding a grudge against someone is not good, how about we start discussing the benefits of forgiving?   Let's discuss how we have hurt each other and then ask for each other's forgiveness. Finally, let's endeavor to create homes where forgiveness is given liberally so that our kiddos can learn how to give and receive forgiveness.   THANKS A BUNCH! Thanks guys for taking the time to listen to this podcast episode.  Please let me know how you are teaching your children to be forgiving in the

SMF 018: Dream Maker or Dream Taker? – with Nicole Lawrence
In this podcast episode I talked about a post entitled "Are you a dream maker or a dream taker?"  that I made on my website some time ago.  Read the entire post "Are you a dream maker or a dream taker?"   I tell my kiddos that they can accomplish anything that they desire if they create a goal, work towards the goal and find the right people and resources to assist them in achieving their goal.  But even though I tell my kiddos this time after time, I still have to constantly tell myself that my role as their mother is to nurture their vision, even if it is not my vision.   Here are some practical steps to help you become a "dream making" parent. Believe that your child's dream can be realized with the proper guidance Listen closely to which dreams consistently come up in his/her conversation Visit your local library to learn about people who had similar dreams and how they were able to achieve it Help your child to create a plan to reach his / her dream Discuss what areas of education may prepare him / her to achieve the dream Do something small to start your child's journey to achieving the dream.   Websites mentioned: http://www.khanacademy.orghttp://www.discoveryeducation.com       I'd love to hear how you're helping your kiddos to reach their dreams.  Please leave a comment below or send me an email.   THANKS A BUNCH!
