We could think of no better way to end 2023’s celebration of Brendan Fraser History Month than with an examination of some recent history and his Oscar winning turn in “The Whale”Along the way we discuss our relationships to the stageplay the film is based on, director Darren Aronofsky’s earlier works, and our own feelings about some of the controversies that have been surround the film and its content. Thank you for spending another Brendan Fraser History Month with us… we’ll see you again next year!

This month things get very special while we’re celebrating the 30th anniversary of a film that has undeniably had a lasting effect on the medium of cinema… Richard Linklater’s “Dazed and Confused” Whether that means your host companions think that the film should be revered or reviled is a whole other story and a mystery we hope to be able to solve by the end of the episode. Episode Artwork by Dayle Decker who joins us briefly for the intro to confirm some of Devon’s memories about why he wanted to cover “Dazed and Confused” in the first place and shares her plans to rewatch the film while Devon and Sejohn talk about it.

After his performance in “The Whale” Brendan Fraser now breathes the rarified air of an Oscar winner, but in 1996 he was in a film where he was already sharing air with future Oscar winners like himself when he briefly appeared in Rich Wilkes “Glory Daze.” Not only does this tie nicely into our sister podcast exploring the Rich Wilkes penned “Airheads,” but it also explores the effects a middling movie can have on an actors future goals and prospects.  Then once we’ve graduated from discussing “Glory Daze” we welcome back Quizmaster General Will Fournier for the conclusion of the Brendan Fraser Quiz of Brendan Fraser 2 and more “Scrubs” discussion between real friends. 

Continuing our celebration of Brendan Fraser History Month we take a look at the 1994 film “With Honors” the tale of a Harvard Senior who thinks he knows everything and the bum that is able to teach him how wrong he is in that line of thinking. Then we rejoin our Quizmaster General to discuss the second episode in the Brendan Fraser Scrubs Trilogy: “My Hero” and then try to prove to Will that we actually watched the episode by solving his gauntlet of trivia questions related to it. 

This week in our continued celebration of Brendan Fraser we discuss the 2013 film “Hair Brained” where he portrays late bloomer Leo Searly a 41-year-old college student who befriends and guides 13-year-old genius prodigy Eli Pettifore on his quest for vengeance against Harvard after their rejection,Before that though we have a discussion about new flavors and varietals of Mountain Dew and address the writer’s strike. Then after the Hair Brained discussion ends we are joined by our resident quizmaster Will Fournier to discuss the first of Brendan’s three episode of Scrubs s1e22: My Occurrence followed by a quiz to see how much of the episode’s content we retained.  

It’s Brendan Fraser History Month again and we are starting the festivities with the first film he appeared in to not only receive multiple Oscar nominations but also win one of the awards as well… “Gods and Monsters”Then once that discussion has finished and Devon has introduced his new "Two Brendan's Theory" we commence The Brendan Fraser Quiz of Brendan Fraser 2 where Quizmaster General Will Fournier starts things off nice and easy with questions related to general trivia about the man 

This very special episode sees the culmination of our discussion and celebration of the original American Pie Trilogy as we finally get to discuss you host-companions favorite entry in the series “American Wedding” as it celebrates its 20th Anniversary.Will the film still hold up after all these years or will filtering it through the lens of 2023 reveal all of the sticky, seedy, details that were either missed or ignored back when we first saw it in High School? There’s only one way to find out and that’s to join us on our journey. 

This episode the latest Nintendo Indie World Showcase and Broken Lizard’s latest film fuel a discussion about the differences between independent projects and “indie” projects in both the video game and cinematic realms. Before that thoughts are shared on “Ori and the Blind Forest,” “Death’s Door,” and the uncertain future of television

The subject of this episode is the past week that was experienced by host-companion Devon where pretty much everything that could go wrong, did go wrong, and how he was able to keep smiling and rise above,Sejohn is inspired by this microcosm of bad luck to discuss the various microcosms that he has observed post the COVID-19 pandemic and how they have been shaped and formed by our current technological landscape.

We kick off this latest episode by sharing our reaction to having a episode banned on YouTube for content related reasons and how it made us examine the work we are currently doing and how it compares to our work from 2021.Then Sejohn gets to share his thoughts about Peter Molyneux and kickstarted video games which ends in a beautiful segue to discuss the new “Super Mario Bros. Movie” and how we each felt about our time with it and what it may mean for Nintendo, Illumination, and the Mario Franchise going forward.

This week’s episode Devon gets to share all the movies and television shows he got to experience recently which prompts a wonderful discussion about the best style of episode distribution for streaming entertainment.Meanwhile, Sejohn is hoarding all of his movie excitement for the release of The Super Mario Bros. Movie this week so he has been passing the time experiencing some older video game outings from the world’s more recognizable plumber.In the end the one thing we can confirm above all else is that this episode is definitely not an April Fool’s Day joke… which is the type of assurance we can all afford in these modern times of uncertainty

For our 50th Very Special Episode we look at a movie that helped build the friendship of your two host-companions while also acting as a cautionary tale not only for how not to adapt a video game to the silver screen but also how not to make a movie... the 1993 piece of cinematic history "Super Mario Bros."Listen as we share our personal journeys with the film. Celebrate the performances of Bob Hoskins, John Leguizamo, Samantha Mathis, and Dennis Hopper. Then ultimately share how rewatching this film is helping us to temper our expectations for the new film featuring the Mario Bros. set to release in just under a week. In the end I think you'll understand why the charm of this film proved unresistible to both Devon and Sejohn and hopefully we can all have some fun along the way.Episode Artwork by Dayle Decker

It seems lately that everybody has become a bit disillusioned with Pop Culture which is why this episode is partially dedicated to solving that mystery.Additionally, Devon spent the bulk of his time with the fourth installments in the John Wick and Resident Evil franchises and is excited to share his thoughts and feelings on both. Before that though Sejohn attempts the insane task of doing an unboxing video without the video.

This week’s episode of The Say Report was recorded a bit later than usual and that plus the gut punch of Lance Reddick's passing has your host-companions the tiniest bit thrown off. Especially Devon, who perhaps ends up talking a bit TOO much about the shows he has been enjoying on NBC/Universal's streaming platform, but Sejohn is also right there to share his experience with “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” while continually forgetting that “Shah-zam: Furry of the Gourds” is a film that not only exists but was released this very weekend

We kick off the episode proper with another thrilling segment of “Pop Goes My Heart” where Sejohn tries out new and exotic sodas, which in turn has Devon sharing some delayed feelings about some changes in the soda pop market and Sejohn having a realization about one of the major players in the Cola Wars.Then we discuss a few pieces of media that have aged like a slice of processed cheese left on a hot school yard blacktop with the primary focus on the Ashton Kutcher/Cameron Diaz romantic comedy(?) “What Happens in Vegas”Finally we celebrate the video game news from the past week including potential new characters for Mario Kart 8’s DLC and Devon’s experience with the Resident Evil 4 Remake’s Chainsaw Demo.Its a scattered pinball game of an episode and we hope that you enjoy… 

This week we inform the audience and ask for their consent as we dive back into Grim Guardians’ world of sexualizing underaged girls and how the creators of River City Girls treat their canonically eighteen year old characters. Then we take a glimpse into the modern world of Toys  and how Target and Wal-Mart have begun to target the lucrative demographic of adult collectors while remaining mired in the foibles of retail.

This week Devon tells the tale of his Big Gaming Weekend and the unexpected moments that occurred and ultimately had to be overcome for him to enjoy his time with Metroid Prime Remasted, Grim Guardians: Demon Purge, Kirby's Return to Dreamland, and Snow Bros. Nick and Tom Special. Meanwhile Sejohn was having a rather... wet... gaming experience of his own as he dove headfirst into the world of the Dead Space Remake and realized the true depths of the game hidden under the combat mechanics and the shine of gore and viscera.All of this is also surrounded by a discussion about Education Television featuring Magic School Buses, the latest information revealed about a sequel to "I Am Legend", and the recent controversies surrounding Roald Dahl and Scott Adams.  

In this extremely special very special episode of The Say Report newly minted Galarian Pokemon Trainer Sejohn learns what its like to meet his heroes when he is joined by none other than the Galarian Pokemon Master herself Dayle Decker as a guest host to discuss all the nitty gritty details of the eighth generation of Pokemon games and hopefully pick up some tips and tricks to make his experience as painless as possible. 

The recording of this week’s episode started with some technical difficulties which inspired a discussion about the lack of innovation and coalescence in the podcasting space that somehow had your host-companions discussing the ways in which their undergraduate collegiate experiences desperately tried to compel them to shirk away from making bold strides in terms of creative progression.Then we examine the modern societal landscape and how we internalized and/or ignored the lessons that should have been learned as a result of the Covid-19 Pandemic.Finally on the lighter side Sejohn shares his experiences returning to the Pokemon games while Devon shares the plans for his BIG VIDEO GAME WEEKEND happening in just a few days time. 

This episode of the Say Report we finally celebrate the official thaw of the collective mental state of humanity that was ushered in by the latest Nintendo Direct. Making us optimistic about all of the things that the future of 2023 holds, while simultaneously playing the role of “foreboding harbinger” with the reveal that the new Zelda game will be the first Switch game sold at the $69.99 price point. Before that happens we take the time to finally have a down and dirty discussion about the advancements that have happened this year in the field of Artificial Intelligence and the nasty truths we as a specials will need to face if we hope to raise it to be better, faster, and stronger than the human race.
