Jay shares a story from his days at Hewlett Packard working in the reliability engineering department. It is of an experiment that he performed to diagnose the problem in the companies printers. In guitar building and wood working there are many new things that need to be done.  It's tempting to take lots of time to plan each step, but it isn't always necessary in this episode Jay explains how and when to use a different tactic. 

Jay describes the first major innovation he made to his guitar work.  His braces for 72 guitars were shaped like I beams adopted from the aircraft industry. They were optimized to be light and stiff.  Many iterations were needed to perfect the brace. Jay recounts the details of this creation.
