What a time to be alive. Now that everyone is self-isolating to try and flatten the curve of the COVID 19 virus, we are all in desperate need of things to help pass the time. Well, I hope that a new podcast episode helps a little! Del Hartley came by almost a year ago to do this episode and I finally found the time to get it ready to release. We made it to season 2! Thanks for sticking with me and welcome to anyone that is checking out the show for the first time.This episode is a bit different in that, I was the one being interviewed. You may remember Jay Perry who was a guest on episodes 6 & 7 in season one who is the host in this episode. Back when Jay was on the show he had the idea of interviewing me for the season two premiere and I thought that would be cool. I briefly shared my story in the first episode of the show and have shared little bits in other episodes but in this one, we dive a little deeper into the details.We talk about how I started my career by going to film school and then dropping out when I found out I was sick. How I kept working in the industry while I was on dialysis which is ultimately what put me on the path that I am on today.We go into detail about my kidney transplant and how that affected my life and in many ways, continues to affect and influence the decisions that I make.This was a lot of fun and I'm glad that Jay was on board to host the show for an episode. Lauren is like so many of us. After finishing high school she attended university only to realize that she didn't particularly love school and she didn't know what she wanted to do after graduating. Sound familiar? Having grown up spending her summers working in a variety of small businesses in a small cottage town in Northern Ontario called Honey Harbour, Lauren was presented with an opportunity. An opportunity that not only gave her life the direction she had longed for but unlocked a newfound sense of passion and drive. Now, 5 years later, after opening "The Hive" in Honey Harbour, which is now considered to be a destination on Georgian Bay, Lauren has opened her second location, just across the bay in the popular ski town of Collingwood. Jacob has a cool job. He's also a really cool guy. His job is fairly new when it comes to how long it has actually existed. Jacob runs a talent management agency that is based in Toronto, Canada, called Good Fun, which manages the careers of many well known social media influencer's. I bet you didn't even know that job existed. Neither did I. But, it totally makes sense the more that I think about it. Jacob's clients, many of which you will probably recognize from your own social media feeds are constantly traveling and it makes perfect sense that they would need someone to manage their business interests when it comes to working with the various brands. That is where Jacob saw an opportunity and moved on it. In this episode, Jacob lets us in on some of the interesting experiences that he has had in his life, and how they all lead him to where he is today. Whether that be randomly deciding to cash in all of his savings in order to throw a huge party, or creating and launching a running campaign, where Jacob ran a series of half-marathons across Canada to raise awareness for mental illness or passing up an opportunity for stability in order to pursue another path. He was also invited to give a TEDx talk, where he was able to share his personal experiences with depression and anxiety. Each of these experiences has played a roll in getting Jacob to where he is today and it was great getting an insight into how he has gotten there in this episode. Enjoy. Back in the day, maybe 8 years ago, when I didn’t know what I was doing….who am I kidding. But back in the day, Bonar and I met on a job I was shooting for the company he worked for at the time. We both showed up to a car dealership, me with my camera equipment and Bonar with a very loose idea of what the client was looking for. In about 30 minutes we came up with an idea and spent the rest of the day shooting it, pulling random employees from around the dealership to act in it with Bonar taking in the role of the lead actor. It actually turned out not bad considering the lack of planning, prep, and the fact that we literally met for the first time that morning. Since then we have both moved in different career directions, but still live in the same world of content production. Bonar has spent the last few days launching and building a digital marketing company called Steak & Sizzle. There is a story behind that name but you’ll have to ask Bonar to share it with you. Steak & Sizzle does many things well, but they have really found a home working in the motorsport world, providing a wide range of content for some of the biggest automotive brands as well as their professional athletes. As cool as that all sounds, that's not what I think is most interesting about his company. You see, Bonar sort of coined the term, ‘Content Engineers’. What he and his company offer to their clients is much more than just running out, shooting a quick video, posting it on youtube and then moving on to the next thing. What they do differently and have taken a lot of time developing is their strategy, in every aspect of the content they are creating for their clients. They build an audience of people that they know will be interested in the content they make, then they build their content to fit their audience. They also do it really fast. I know that this is nothing new, most large companies are doing this already, but Bonar has found himself in a market that is fairly untapped, which is exciting for an entrepreneur. In this episode, we talk about the importance of just taking the first step, whatever that may be. Bonar talks about how identifying what his first step was and finding a way to take it was crucial to the start of his business. Eric has been making music for a long time. Whether it be in pop-punk bands in his teens, to dropping out of university and touring across North America in a well-known rock band, to writing his own music. Eric has been working at it for a while and it has been a gradual progression that has gotten him to where he is today. In this episode, Eric does a great job of sharing the lessons that he has learned over the years through the many experiences that he has had. We talk about what went into deciding to leave his college education behind when given the opportunity to travel as a guitar tech with an already established band. Then how that opportunity opened countless doors for his own musical career. After his father was diagnosed with cancer and given 9 months to live, Jay quit his job and became a full-time caregiver, something he knew nothing about. In this episode, Jay opens up about the experiences he went through over the next two years of his life which then inspired him to write a book to share his experiences with others dealing with the same thing. Jay found that when his father was first diagnosed, there were no resources out there for caregivers like him. Now, after his father passing, Jay wrote a book as a form of therapy for himself, but also a way to share his experiences and to hopefully help others that are going through similar situations. Jay is a super talented photographer that has done some big campaigns for the Toronto Raptors and Toronto Maple Leafs. We talk about how he got started in photography and how a random opportunity paired with an unexpected photo changed his life. After shooting in photos in nightclubs Jay got the opportunity to travel to Haiti on a missions trip. A week into the trip while building schools in Happiness Alley, Jay took a photo that would both change his life and launch his photography career in a way that he didn't expect. Since then Jay has gone on to shoot countless commercial campaigns as well as some impressive personal work. He also started an organization called Friends With Hearts, which focuses on providing families in need with Christmas gifts around the holidays. Jay is an all around good guy, that is truly trying to help those in need, with everything that he does. Enjoy. Melody is an amazing artist and illustrator and all around creative individual. She is also a musician and along with her sister, they make music under the name band name SONAGUR. Give them a listen and check out their videos - they are super cool! Oh, they also have a creative agency that focuses on building creative campaigns for a variety of companies. Talented siblings, right? Melody has an interesting story that I think a lot of young creatives will be able to relate to and learn from. Like many people when graduating high-school (myself included), Melody didn’t know exactly what it was she wanted to do. Despite being a talented visual artist and gaining early admission to OCAD for Graphic Design, she left the program not long after she began, feeling unfulfilled and uncertain that it was a good fit. From there she decided to give freelance design and illustration a go, while continuing to create and develop her own art, which eventually got a substantial amount of recognition. She is about to re-locate from Toronto, Canada to LA in the upcoming months in order to continue developing her art and all of her other creative endeavours, which is a super exciting opportunity. Kyle is an amazing drummer and despite his talent and love for music, he found a different lifestyle that suited who he was as a person a bit better. He recently returned from South Sudan where he worked with the Danish Refugee Council in a conflict zone, meeting with both citizens and government officials in an effort to better understand the political unrest and civil war that is on-going within the country. Talk about a unique experience! We talk about a few different topics but, but if you are at all interested in getting more involved in humanitarian initiatives, or realistically, travelling at all, you're going to enjoy this episode. We also discuss how some lifestyles are better suited for some individuals more than others and why finding yours is important to getting the most out of life. Kyle will be moving to New York in the upcoming weeks to work at the UN, which is a pretty huge opportunity, and after listening to this episode you'll come to see that it's a pretty impressive accomplishment as well. Rony has had an interesting life. In the intro, I mention that he was born in Egypt which is a mistake on my part.
