The Wellness Syndrome
Carl Cederström, associate Professor at Stockholm University, and André Spicer, Professor of Organisational Behaviour at City University London, argue in their book “The Wellness Syndrome” that the ever-present pressure to maximize our wellness has started to work against us, making us feel worse and provoking us to withdraw into ourselves. It is undeniable today that we are constantly reminded to eat well, to practice meditation and yoga, to be happy at work (using treadmill desks), to do regularly cross fit sessions, to drink organic smoothies, to wear gadget on our wrist to monitor our sleep, to think positive… Carl and André believe that wellness is now a moral demand and obligation, an ideology almost: if you are healthy, you are superior. If the authors have nothing against self-optimization, they question the consequences of this culture where the pressure is put on the individual to find a solution to be fit, happy and well, forgetting that the social and economic environment play a big role too. The authors mention :”the prevailing attitudes towards those who fail to look after their bodies. These people are demonized as lazy, feeble or weak-willed. They are seen as obscene deviants, unlawfully and unabashedly enjoying what every sensible person should resist.” Listen to this very funny podcast where the authors explain the foundations of the Wellness Syndrome and their one year experiment to try almost everything in the wellness industry (including plastic surgery to look like Justin Bieber!) Some of the topics we have discussed with Carl and André: – What is the wellness syndrome? – What is the difference between positive thinking and positive psychology? – How we are now pressurized to fit in the culture of well-being? – Why Carl has undergone plastic surgery to look like a young Justin Bieber? – Who will be Carl and André’s life coach?
