Episode 461: Improve Your Project Business Skills #PMOT (Free)
Play Now: Sorry. Your browser cannot play this video. Today's topic is project business, which is what you get when companies organize their primary business activities in projects. They are sometimes called project-based, project-driven, or project-centric companies. In particular, we are introducing The Project Business Study Book. The study book is a free, 118-page introduction to Project Business Management. Joining us today are Oliver Lehmann and Martin Berneburg from the Project Business Foundation. I'm sure that they can give us a much better definition of what exactly project business is. In particular, we'll learn how it affects us, project managers' required skills when we manage a project that is considered part of project business versus when we manage one that isn't.

And if you are a regular listener of The PM Podcast, then you know that I am a PMP® trainer and that my company offers PMP training. Therefore, spoiler alert, in this episode, my guest and I will not only help you get ready for the exam, but we will also be mentioning the PMP products and services that we offer to our students. So expect some promotions. And my guest is Jeff Furman. He's been on the show previously, and today, we are going to talk about his new book "Boost Your PMP Score: Learn The Keywords In Sets: 2nd Edition: For PMP 2021". The book's idea is that when you study for the PMP exam, you will come across many concepts, topics, and key ideas that seem to come in pairs. For example, the "project baseline" and the "performance baseline". They are related, but not quite the same. And in his book, Jeff gives you the list of these and an approach of how to make learning these more fun.

Episode 459: Managing Multiple Projects #PMOT (Free)
Play Now: Sorry. Your browser cannot play this video. If you are like most project managers out there, then you are likely managing more than one project. You have more than one ball in the air. You are juggling. That means you will have to divide your attention between multiple projects. Keeping an eye on each of the balls as they are flying through the air. Experience helps. Both with keeping three balls in the air and also with making sure you successfully complete all of the projects you are assigned to. Well... you have come to the right place because over the last decade, I have published 458 episodes here on The PM Podcast, and most of them qualify for free PMI PDUs. In this recording of a live stream we are joined by Elizabeth Harrin soon launches a new course on Mastering Multiple Projects. Episode 458: Earn 60 Free PMP PDU #PMOT (Free)
Play Now: Sorry. Your browser cannot play this video. If you are a certified project manager, and - in particular - if you hold a certification from The Project Management Institute (PMI)® then you know that your certification has to be renewed every three years. The process is quite simple: After you are certified you have to earn a specified number of professional development units (PDUs) If you are a Project Management Professional (PMP)® the number is 60, and for a PMI Agile Certified Practitioner (PMI-ACP)® it's 30 You'll have to report your PDUs with PMI® and at the end of the three years you pay the renewal fee, which starts the next 3-year cycle for you to earn the next set of PDUs But... where do you find those PDUs? And how do you find free PDUs? Well... you have come to the right place because over the last decade, I have published 458 episodes here on The PM Podcast, and most of them qualify for free PMI PDUs. So here is the recording of a recent live stream where I presented how to earn PDUs from this very podcast. As always, with lots of questions from the audience.

Episode 457: Do I Qualify for The PMP Exam? #PMOT (Free)
Play Now: Sorry. Your browser cannot play this video. The Project Management Professional (PMP)® exam is not an easy exam. It is an advanced, experience-based exam that you can only take if you can successfully show that you meet all the requirements. And the requirement that most candidates have a hard time with is the need to show at least 4,500 (in some cases even 7,500) hours of leading and directing projects. Even though candidates know all of their projects and how many hours they have worked on, they find it difficult to quickly identify if their experience hours actually count. In this episode Cornelius Fichtner helps you answer the question Do I Qualify for the PMP Exam? by walking you through this simple, five-step process: Know the definition of "Project Manager" Download the PMP Handbook Make a list of your projects Download the PMP Exam Content Outline (ECO) Bring it all together

Episode 441: Facilitating a Project Planning Meeting (Free)
Play Now: Rich Maltzman and Jim Stewart Planning your project right from the start is a big factor for future success. It’s definitely not everything, but doing the planning right goes a long way. And most planning is done in meetings. And that again means that you really want to make sure that those meetings deliver. That is where the book How to Facilitate Productive Project Planning Meetings - A Practical Guide to Ensuring Project Success can help. It was written by Rich Maltzman (LinkedIn Profile) and Jim Stewart (LinkedIn Profile), and yes, it does indeed contain Goblins. We have chosen to focus on chapter 6 “The Zen of Facilitation”. We talk about what is wrong with the way many planning meetings are being facilitated today, what facilitation and facilitative style means, and we have many good tips for you. And yes… we will talk about the goblins. What you'll learn in this interview will help you put together a better and more accepted project plan. Lastly here is what one reviewer on Amazon wrote: This book read [sic] better than a textbook as it was full of humor and step-by-step tips for immediate application. The authors provide insight on Agile project planning, tips on facilitating status meetings and lessons learned meetings, and even their appendices provide additional information on topics such as Project Management 101, meeting war stories, and access to their templates.

Episode 440: PMBOK® Guide Seventh Edition (Free)
Play Now: Cynthia Dionisio, Mike Griffiths and Stephen Townsend At the Project Management Institute (PMI)® Global Conference 2019 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, I had the opportunity to attend two workshops to help in the development of A Guide to The Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide) -- Seventh edition. Yes, you read that right: Seventh Edition. And here is what PMI® wrote about the workshop: PMBOK® Guide – The Next Generation: An Innovation Working Session Join us for an innovation workshop to develop concepts for the next generation of the PMBOK® Guide. Explore current thinking to ensure the next version encompasses the full spectrum of project management approaches. Then actively participate in shaping the content through a series of innovation discussions and exercises. Bring your expertise, ideas and energy to collaborate with your colleagues in building a robust and resilient project management body of knowledge. The workshop was led by Cynthia Dionisio, Mike Griffiths, and Stephen Townsend. Cyndi and Mike are the co-leads for the new PMBOK® Guide Seventh Edition and Stephen represents PMI. And in addition to attending the workshop, I also got the opportunity to sit down with them and learn what we can expect from the new guide. (My best guess is that it will be published sometime in 2021). In the interview we talk about the move from process-based to principles-based standards, what will happen to the domains and knowledge-areas, how the next guide will cover the entire delivery spectrum, why it will be much shorter than the current edition, and what each member of the team hopes that the seventh edition will be able to achieve.

Episode 439: PMI's New Brand (Free)
Play Now: Cindy Anderson, VP Brand Management at PMI Today, we welcome Cindy Anderson (LinkedIn Profile) who is the VP, Brand Management at Project Management Institute (PMI)®. This interview was recorded at the PMI® Global Conference 2019 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. We'll talk about the elements of PMI's new brand and the fact that there is a lot more to it than "just" a new logo. And that's an important distinction. While the new logo is what most of us see, the new brand and its slogan/positioning "Powering the Project Economy" are so much more than just a few new visual assets. In the interview, we talk about how the new brand was developed and how it affects the many stakeholders around the world.
