Episode 8: Building and Curating a Prog Rock Record Collection (Part 2)
This post first appeared on Progressive Rock Appreciation Society.
Greetings! Please enjoy these show notes from the Progressive Rock Appreciation Society Podcast, Episode 8: Building and Curating a Prog Rock Record Collection (Part 2).
This is a continuation of Episode 7: Building and Curating a Prog Rock Record Collection (Part 1). If you missed it, be sure to check it out!
Hey, everyone! It’s Maggie and you’re listening to episode 8 of the Progressive Rock Appreciation Society podcast.
Thank you for the music!
First off, I want to give a special shout out to:
Aboyandhisguitar for the use of String Cheese, which you can find on Soundcloud
Drive On for their Into the Sunset EP, which is available on BandCamp.
Mike Elias from Barely Brothers Records, where you really need to go if you’re ever in St. Paul. (New arrivals, a giant wall of 45s, and of course, the Record Collector’s Journal!)
More Live Prog!
I saw Soft Machine last week, and I’m still reeling. I only have one Soft Machine record, and I don’t know what I was thinking it would be, but as far as the bands I know and love, the closest comparison I have is legit King Crimson. They were so experimental, and their horn player is this younger guy who was just fantastic—I didn’t think I’d be able to make the show and I’m so extremely glad I did. Lots of very special stories in between songs, I love when older bands share that kind of thing, lots of just breathtaking musical moments—it was just kind of mind-blowing. I’m really happy I had the chance. And assuming all along that I couldn’t go, and then suddenly being there, made it even that much better. Really need to work on my Soft Machine collection.
Anyway, other exciting stuff coming up: Carl Palmer’s ELP legacy is in town actually today, the day I’m recording this intro, which is Tuesday October 30th. Missed that, but I hope you have a chance to catch him out on the road, he’s so phenomenal to see live.
Alan Parsons is coming up here in Minneapolis, he’s coming up at the State Theater November 9th already, super excited about that one—and then, oh my gosh, Brand X is going on tour. Phenomenal jazz fusion band, if you are anywhere around the very few cities they’re hitting on this tour, I highly recommend listening immediately to the album Moroccan Roll and then getting yourself some tickets already. I’m definitely planning on a road trip all the way from Minneapolis to Milwaukee for the occasion, so if you can’t make it to a Brand X show, I will share my experience with you as much as I can, and the best way not to miss a thing is to follow me on Instagram at @progmaggie.
Musical Halloween Costumes
OK, so I wanna quickly say—it’s Halloween, and I’ve just had so much come up this month that I did not get a chance to put my Peter Gabriel costume together like I’d planned…okay, this is probably not the right episode to mention my Peter Gabriel costume plans, I think I’ve obsessed about him enough in this one…so, anyway, saving the P-Gabes costume for another time, but I want to live vicariously through you.
I really enjoy dressing up like people I love, especially musical people. I’ve been Chris Squire for Halloween, I’ve been, oh, let’s see—Mike Nesmith, Magenta from Rocky Horror Picture Show—and that’s not even counting the random times Lisa and I have just dressed up like our progressive rock heroes for random photo shoots for no reason whatsoever. I honestly don’t know if she makes a better Keith Emerson or Steve Howe…
Anyway. My point is—I love this stuff, and if you had a really fantastic musical Halloween costume this year, or any year, for any holiday—I want to see it! Send me photographic evidence of you in your best prog and/or musical tribute costume, because I really want to make a blog post out of ’em. Email those puppies to maggie [at] progrockpodcast.com, I want to see you all in your amazing costumes.
On with the episode!
Well, I think that’s it for local stuff and bands on tour, so let’s get on with the episode! We’re on a two-part mission: introduce you to my record collection, because that is how you will know me, and also, seriously, find some stuff to get rid of. Space is a serious issue, and I know that Mike Elias at Barely Brothers Records (who you may remember from episode 1) is just sitting in the store right now waiting for me to bring my little stack of records, so…
Let’s do a little bit more work on my collection, and then let’s head out and try to sell some stuff!
