It's twelve months since Dr Rosemarie Mallett was appointed Bishop of Croydon. In this interview with Premier Christianity's Megan Cornwell, Dr Mallett describes her early life growing up in Barbados and subsequent experiences of racism when she moved to the UK at the age of seven. "It was pointed out to me that my colour was a problem, because I was black." With her wider family also experiencing prejudice, Rosemarie became more politically aware and involved in fighting for racial justice. In discussing her Christian faith and decision to become ordained, she also shares her struggle with the Church of England as an institution, due to its history of involvement in colonialism, imperialism, and chattel slavery. Ultimately, she decided to play a role in repairing the breach and contributing to a more just and inclusive church. Speaking ahead of the 75th anniversary of Windrush, Rosemarie also reflects on the resilience and contributions of those who came to the UK with hope and expectation, despite facing racism and marginalisation. After being bullied as a child, Oli London struggled with low self-esteem and self-worth. He had hoped a series of transitions and expensive plastic surgery would him feel better. Instead, he became addicted to surgery, spending $300,000 on botox and skin-whitening injections in order to look more Korean - a culture he had become "obsessed" with. The controversial decision to appear more Korean resulted in critical articles and hateful messages on social media. But in the end it was the kindness of a priest that drew him to the Christian faith and turned his life around. The first black woman to be ordained as a vicar in the Church of England speaks to Premier Christianity's Sam Hailes about her life and faith. Earlier this month, Canon Eve, 72, was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Pride of Birmingham Awards, in recognition of her anti-racism work and service to the wider community. It was the culmination of a calling which began at a very early age - when God called her to ministry as a young child. "I found myself alone in a room and heard a voice calling me...My grandmother said don't tell anyone, God will reveal his promise when it's the right time for you," she remembers. Canon Eve also recounts going to church from a very early age - regardless of whether her parents accompanied her, and explains why she refuses to "romanticise" the Windrush Generation.
