Periods & people around Aotearoa
The grand finale of season one, Periods & People Around Aotearoa explores the experiences of three phenomenal people who get periods. We start with Linda Vagana, a world-class athlete and the auntie we want around when our periods unexpectedly comes. What happens when you’re a Silver Fern and get your period in the middle of a game? Well, Linda and her bag of ‘surfboards’ is what happens. Next, Luce from Shit You Should Care About, you know that website / Instagram / podcast that absolutely blew up this year? Luce and the SYSCA team are paving the way for the truth-telling, spotlight-shining, question-asking media the world needs. Finally, Megan Mansell, breakfast host of The Edge drops in and really pulls back the curtain on an experience that many people go through at some point in life. Meg’s honesty left Danika, Tegan, and the producers speechless. We loved having all these wahine on the show for our last episode... or is it? You’ll have to listen to find out.   Thanks to our mates a U by Kotex!   The Gram, The Web & The Other Stuff @ShitYouShouldCareAbout https://www.instagram.com/shityoushouldcareabout/ Linda Vagana https://www.booksinhomes.org.nz/who-we-are/about-us/meet-the-duffy-team.aspx @Meganonair https://www.instagram.com/meganonair/  @ThePeriodPlace  https://www.instagram.com/theperiodplace/  https://www.theperiodplace.co.nz/  @TeganYorwarth  https://www.instagram.com/teganyorwarth/ @DanikaRevell  https://www.instagram.com/danikarevell/  @UbyKotexAUNZ  https://www.instagram.com/ubykotexaunz/  https://www.ubykotex.com @BlueandGinge  https://www.instagram.com/blueandginge/  https://www.blueandginge.com/    Theme Music: All Stars by Patrick Patrikios

Periods and te ao Māori
Such a special episode to make and share, Periods and te ao Māori with Te Rina Triponel. Te Rina is an incredible wāhine working at Māori Television. We asked Te Rina to come on this episode to discuss waiwhero and what having a period means to her as a wāhine Maori. As always we learn about periods but also debunk some myths and work through some points of shame.  Thanks to our mates at U by Kotex! When she became a mum last year, Te Rina turned her journalist training on herself asking questions of her whanau to better understand the experiences of wāhine who came before her. Whether Māori or not we hope this episode inspires people with periods to honour their bodies and maybe start looking at it from a different perspective.   Resources The Spinoff -  Decolonise your body! Periods & Poverty
The culture of shame around periods and a strain on resources prevent some people in Aotearoa from accessing basic period education and products. People who get periods are often ostracised from basic activities, and if you’re struggling to put food on the table as it is, affording period products can become an insurmountable burden, no one should have to live that way. This episode Danika and Tegan chat with Jacinta Gulasekharam, co-founder of Dignity, a fellow initiative helping Aotearoa work towards period equity, and our very own Sarah Mikkelson, co-founder of The Period Place.  Thanks to our mates at U by Kotex!   Menstrual health is not just an issue for developing countries. While the daily challenges people face might be different, periods are still met with silence, neglect, and stigma here in Aotearoa. Dignity and The Period Place are among several Kiwi initiatives that are working towards ending period poverty in Aotearoa. You may very well never experience period poverty but someone in your group of friends, workplace or school might. Listen to this episode to gain understanding and learn how you can be part of the solution. Periods & Taboos
It’s time to talk about the things you only talk about with your closest mates. This episode we brought in Dani Fennessy to do just that. Dani is the host of the podcast Diaries of a Dyke and we love her because she isn’t afraid to talk about anything, seriously nothing is off the table in this episode. We chat about having sex on your period, why Dani isn’t keen on scissoring, and the terror of missing a period.    Thanks to our mates at U by Kotex!   Dani Fennessy’s podcast Diaries of a Dyke is a real, safe and completely open podcast for the rainbow community. She’s joined by guests from all walks of life to share learnings and experiences from the LGBTQ+ world on a mission to never let anyone feel alone in their sexuality or identity. Periods & Nutrition
We recommend listening to this episode with your favourite snack nearby. Our Periods & Nutrition episode is full of the genius advice and support of one smart lady, dietitian & women's health expert, Sara Widdowson. Sara gets real about the way that food can affect our period (including actually getting it in the first place), those fad diets that are really just making things a whole lot worse and explains to us what the heck intuitive eating is. If you have struggled with an eating disorder, suffer from endo or PCOS, or just want to better understand how your food affects your body, get involved with this ep. Thanks to our mates at U by Kotex! As a dietician with a focus on women’s health Sara advocates for the idea that fertility is about a lot more than having a baby. It’s about your overall health and wellbeing. She has a practice - Your Monthly - where she helps people understand their periods better as well as get their period back after losing it. “Periods shouldn't be painful, heavy, or leave you housebound. And, if you struggle with mood changes, PMD, or PMS, I can help you feel like you again, and not just on the other 21 days of the month” - Sara Widdowson. If you’re interested in taking control of your period health with Sara, get in touch via Your Monthly, she sees patients in person and via video chat, and follow her on the Gram. Sara recommends affordable steps you can take throughout the episode plus resources you can read which are linked below. Periods & Gender
On this episode, we chat Periods & Gender with two long-time friends of The Period Place, Aych McArdle and Lee Lamont. We wanted to find out, what’s the period experience like for non-binary and transgender people? That question is pretty huge because, just like everything, each individual’s experience is unique. Lee and Aych tell us their own stories of getting periods and talk about how the ultra-feminine way society talks about periods can cause feelings of gender dysphoria for gender diverse people. Thanks to our mates at U by Kotex! If want to be a better ally to your community, this is the episode for you. For all of our LQBTIQ+ listeners, we hope that this episode speaks to you in some way, we’d love to hear from you, DM us your stories and thoughts @ThePeriodPlace. Shout out to RainbowYOUTH, an amazing place for queer, gender diverse, takatāpui & intersex youth, their friends, whānau, and wider communities, which aims to ensure that New Zealand is a place where all young people can thrive. Aych is also the co-chairperson of OUTline a national service that helps LGBTIQ+ New Zealanders access support, information and a sense of community. They provide a free peer support phone line, a transgender peer support service for trans and non-binary people in Auckland, and specialist face-to-face and Skype counselling for exploring gender and sexuality for LGBTIQ+ people across Aotearoa.  The Gram, The Web & The Other Stuff @ThePeriodPlace https://www.instagram.com/theperiodplace/ https://www.theperiodplace.co.nz/  @TeganYorwarth https://www.instagram.com/teganyorwarth/ @DanikaRevell https://www.instagram.com/danikarevell/  @AychMcArdle https://www.instagram.com/aychmcardle/  @RainbowYOUTH https://www.instagram.com/rainbowyouth/ https://ry.org.nz/  @OUTlineAotearoa https://www.instagram.com/outlineaotearoa/ https://outline.org.nz/  @UbyKotexAUNZ https://www.instagram.com/ubykotexaunz/ https://www.ubykotex.com.au/  @BlueandGinge https://www.instagram.com/blueandginge/ https://www.blueandginge.com/  Theme Music: All Stars by Patrick Patrikios
