Dyan deNapoli and The Great Penguin Rescue - 004
Just after the iron ore carrier MV Treasure foundered off the coast of Cape Town in South Africa, it was learnt that 1,300 tons of oil spilled into the ocean - contaminating the habitat of 75,000 penguins. If nothing was done - 41 percent of the entire world population of African penguins would have been wiped out just like that. Thankfully, individuals and organizations rallied into action to save these birds. Over a period of three months, more than 12,500 experienced and inexperienced volunteers from all across the globe came to South Africa to offer their help. They de-oiled, nursed the birds back to health, and released nearly all of the 40,000 birds affected by the spill, back into the ocean. Throughout this period, there were many people involved, and many stories to share - and all of these were captured in Dyan deNapoli's best selling book - The Great Penguin Rescue. And it certainly was. As of today, it is still recorded as the largest animal rescue effort ever.

Samir Lakhani and the Eco-Soap Bank - 003
Samir Lakhani noticed that most of the locals in the Cambodian village he was working in, were frequently falling ill. He also discovered that mothers would bathe their young children using detergent. Why? Because they couldn't afford soap. So he set out to find a solution - one that wouldn't cost the villagers anything. And his solution came from where he was staying at the time. In a villa/hotel, where he discovered that every day, the cleaners would come in and during their routine cleanup of his room, take away his barely used soap and replace it with a brand new one.  Listen to how Samir eventually launched the Eco-Soap Bank which as of Nov 2017, has saved, sanitized and supplied soap to over 661,000 individuals in developing countries. Samir is one of the nominees for the CNN Hero of the year award for 2017.

Welcome to The One Who Does - 000
If you want to know why I started this podcast, then listen to this. It's been on my list for years, but I never had the courage to do it, until I found a reason that was stronger than my fear.
