197: Joyfully Sweet, AIP, Paleo Caramels and Marshmallows Made with Real Ingredients with Sweet Apricity Creator, Tonya Butts
Sweet Apricity founder, Tonya, Sweet Apricity answers the question “Can I ever eat something fun again?” Tonya began crafting her dairy-free caramels as a graduation gift for her best friend Wendy, who manages debilitating symptoms with the Autoimmune Protocol (AIP). While offering powerful relief for those with autoimmune disease, the AIP also eliminates gluten, grains, chocolate, dairy, eggs, and refined sugars, taking store-bought treats off the table. Tonya knew what most of us who have tried a strict diet understand: sometimes the greatest gift is an indulgence that won’t wreck our progress. Sweet Apricity’s Caramels, Marshmallows, and NEW Caramel Sauce offer a sweet reward for all the work it takes to heal. They are grain-free, dairy-free, and refined sugar-free, made only with simple ingredients allowed on the AIP and Paleo diets. And they’re delicious. The first time Wendy tried what would become a Sweet Apricity sea salted caramel she named our mantra: that just a little makes AIP worthwhile. What began as a celebratory offering has grown into a cult favorite treat. Still locally crafted by hand in Portland, Oregon, Sweet Apricity remains true to its roots with real ingredients, small batch production, and a growing line of artisan offerings. From the beginning, the mission of Sweet Apricity has been to offer a treat made with ingredients our bodies will love. We know that elimination diets can feel mentally taxing even as they help our bodies heal. That rather than derailing our efforts, the right treat might just help us stay the course. Sweet Apricity will help you find the joy in your healing diet. It’s a burst of sweetness as welcome as the warmth of the winter sun. 188: Sippn' on some Tonic Rhizomes with Drink Rhizome Creator, Elisa Wickstrom
"We created Rhizome for you! A new way to hydrate. Complex, spicy flavors without the sugar and alcohol found in most adult beverages. Our handmade, slow brewed process (using only the freshest organic ingredients) allows you to revitalize your gut and your mind (without spending hours in the kitchen.) So what does Rhizome mean? Rhizome is both a botanical and a philosophical concept. Ginger and turmeric (often mistaken for roots, ahem!) are rhizomes. They grow horizontally and infinitely. They have no beginning or end. Each piece of ginger and turmeric is part of a larger whole. In philosophy, Rhizome describes a non-linear process. A new way of approaching thoughts and activities. A rejection of the belief that thought and culture are by default hierarchical. We are starting this in the middle of our lives and connecting with you in the middle of yours. We're here to meet you where you are, with a new way of approaching health, hydration, and joy. Like no one else!" - Elisa Wickstrom Follow Drink Rhizome on Instagram @drinkrhizome Visit the Drink Rhizome store Ritzfit.com - see the deals!

186: Lark Ellen Farm - Sprouted Organic Snacks and Cereals with Founder, Kelley D'Angelo
Located in the scenic mountains of Southern California, Lark Ellen Farm is nestled in the beautiful Ojai Valley. Ojai (pronounced O-hi) has for many years been a mecca for those seeking physical and spiritual health. Over the years both young and old have found their way to this serene town just a few miles from the sea near Santa Barbara. At the East end of the valley lies Lark Ellen Farm. A small farm where chickens roam free and fruit, vegetables and herbs grow in abundance. It is in this setting where a commitment to good health prevails, that our Grain Free Granola was created. It all began in late 2014 with a 30-day commitment to avoid grains. Kelley knew grains and wheat can cause inflammation, so she turned her body into an experiment to see if avoiding them would make a difference for her. Her digestive system improved, and lifelong chronic pain had vanished but Kelley missed her bowl of morning cereal. Kelley took to her kitchen to experiment, trying recipes and learning about nutrition like the benefits of sprouting. In early 2015 Kelley started selling her creations at the Ojai Farmer's Market, as Ojai Granola Girl, and her recipes were well-received. Later that year the name was changed to Lark Ellen Farm. Today her children still sell the Lark Ellen Farm products on Sundays. Not to mention, Natural Stacks has released two incredibly powerful and trustworthy CBD products. The World’s First Open-Source Supplement Company Open Source means ingredient traceability, full label disclosure, and third-party lab testing. Natural Stacks developed the most rigorous self-imposed quality protocol in the industry, going beyond requirements and regulations to assure customers that Natural Stacks stands behind its products and its commitment to transparency. Ingredient Traceability Most supplement companies let their manufacturers source the ingredients in their formulas. The manufacturer's incentive is to increase their margins. They do this by using low-cost commodity grade ingredients from unvetted suppliers. Often times the ingredients are synthetically produced to mimic a natural compound and have not been tested for safety or pharmacological activity. Not Natural Stacks. They source 100% of their ingredients meaning that we control the entire supply chain. Their ingredients are grown with integrity and consistently processed for maximum potency and bioavailability. 180: The Shepherd Song Farm: Lamb and Goat Round Table, with Chef Alan Bergo and Sylvia Tabor
For more than a decade, Shepherd Song Farm owners Judy and Larry have participated in numerous volunteer assignments in Africa through the USAID Farmer-to-Farmer Program. In collaboration with small farmers in Mali, they started the Common Pastures project with the goal of sharing knowledge and creating sustainable farming practices. Judy and Larry entered the sheep industry in 1988, accidentally and without a plan. Neither of them had a farm background nor a dream of living on the land. They had adopted 2 Belgian Sheepdogs that needed a job and agility, obedience, tracking just wasn’t enough. A herding clinic inspired their passion. The goats immediately jumped the fence to escape their enthusiasm. Recommendations were to start on sheep–generally more cooperative. They sourced some rough land to lease of no value to cropping, bought an RV, and added a few sheep—then more sheep—then more. The dogs and the land–desperately in need of grazing, advocated for more and more sheep. At around 300 breeding ewes it was obvious they had no time for herding trials much less agility, obedience or tracking and that the human partners needed training in managing and leading a flock. Today's guest, Chef Alan Bergo, interviewed by myself and Sylvia Tabor (@biohacking.chick), tells the story of Shepherds Song Farm while diving deep into the specifics of lamb and goat farming, raw meat, and of course Shepherds Song's products. A little bit about Chef Alan Bergo... Chef Alan Bergo is a 16 year veteran of the Midwestern culinary Industry. He was previously executive chef of The Salt Cellar and Lucia’s restaurant, as well as sous chef to Lenny Russo at St. Paul’s famed Heartland.
