Episode 77: The Myth of Stretching
Stretching, icing, all that sort of massage, all that kind of rehab stuff, super, super important, right? Maybe it's the worst thing you could be doing for yourself, if you're trying to be a healthier, better human being, let alone athlete. We're going to find out more about that on today's episode of The MOVEMENT Movement Podcast. Today I am chatting with Brianne Showman, PT, DPT, a Physical Therapist by trade, but what she primarily does, is coach runners and obstacle course racers. Many years ago, Brianne was a traditional therapist who saw the injured person in an insurance-based clinic, and she got very fed up with what insurance companies do to control us. She got very fed up with just fixing broken people constantly, so she became a coach to get people on the front end of things in order to make more resilient athletes rather than constantly fixing broken people. If you have questions for me about the show, please email me, Steven Sashen, at move@jointhemovementmovement.com, or visit the website at www.jointhemovementmovement.com, and find what's going on, be part of the family of helping people discover and rediscover that natural movement is the obvious better healthy choice, just like natural food is... If you want to be part of the tribe, please subscribe. For more information on Brianne: Dr. Brianne Showman Brown has been a licensed physical therapist since 2006. Since that time, she has been helping active adults and athletes get back to the activities they love. As ideas and theories in rehabilitation, functional movement, and nutrition are constantly changing, she is constantly searching for the new information in order to get you back to the activities you love as quickly (but safely) as possible. Being a CrossFitter and runner herself, she also understands the desire to want to push through the pain, not wanting to take time off, and wanting to get back to activity as soon as possible when required to take time off. She does her best to keep you active in the things you are able to do, modifying as necessary, but not taking you completely out of the gym, off the track/field, or off the road. Episode 76: Do Running Shoes Make you Stupid?
Now, I'm not suggesting that if you put on a pair of traditional running shoes, your IQ will go down, you won't get into the college of your choice, or you won't be able to fill out a tax form or a crossword puzzle. But, I'm going to talk about two other kinds of stupidity. And when I talk about traditional running shoes, traditional is sort of a funny word to use because what most people think of as a running shoe, thick, padded, motion control, arch support, elevated heel, things like that. Frankly, that's actually not traditional. For most of human history, we ran in shoes that looked frankly more like the minimalist shoe, just enough to protect you from the ground and hold that protection onto your foot. So what I'm talking about with traditional running shoes... And here's one of the ways they make you dumber, because they have all that cushioning, which we think we need, we think. Well, Cushing is good, because running must be hard on the joint, so we need cushioning, right? Well, it's a great idea, but the reality is, it doesn't work that way at all, because when you have all that cushioning, there are a number of things that happen, one, you tend to land harder because your brain is trying to get feedback from the ground, and with all that questioning, you can't feel it. You have more nerve endings in the sole of your feet then anywhere but your fingertips and your lips. That's so that your brain knows how to use the rest of your body correctly. So if you make it dumb by making it numb, sometimes you'll land harder just to get that feedback that you need for balance and agility, but of course with all that extra padding, you don't have the balance with all that extra height, you don't have the balance. Episode 75: The Tai Chi Secret to Stronger Glutes
I often talk about how feet are the most important thing, but I also talk about how glutes are the most important thing. And, maybe to train your glutes, you need to train your feet. To train your feet, you need to train your glutes, what's the connection? We're going to find out more about that on today's episode of The MOVEMENT Movement Podcast with my special guest Chong Xie. Chong Xie practiced Wushu as a child in Beijing Sport University, is an avid researcher and student of Tai Chi, he has a bachelor degree of science from Binghamton University. With his ebook "Secret of Athleticism" Chong Xie makes an honest endeavor to help all of us understand and discover a path to superior athletic performance without the expense of injury. Connect with Chong Xie: Website: https://www.secret-of-athleticism.com YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCvadUJcVjdSKA0cUJpStQKA Chong Xie Bio: Chong Xie is the author of “Secret of Athleticism”, inventor of the Hyperarch Fascia Training System and founder of the page “secret-of-athleticism.com” a website and discussion group founded to understand more about the foot, and its relationship to athleticism, as well as best training practices. Chong has a computer science degree and has been working as a technical analyst in the software industry for the last 10 years. His interest in the foot was piqued by seeing the large discrepancy in athletic performance, and Chong has spent many years on a quest to unlock the “secret” of athletic performance that is hiding beneath our shoes. Episode 72: We Didn't Evolve This Way
Here on The MOVEMENT Movement podcast, we talk about natural movement. Is what we're talking about actually even natural? Did we evolve to do the things that we talk about doing? I get an email maybe once a week or a comment on YouTube video once or twice a week that says what I'm talking about, this whole idea of using footwear like ours, that doesn't have a bunch of cushioning and padding and motion control in our support. Or, even walking and running barefoot. That's not good. It's not what you're supposed to do. Only amazingly, wonderfully talented gifted genetic freak people can actually do it, because we didn't evolve on hard surfaces, we didn't evolve to be able to run on pavement, we didn't evolve to be able to stand on cement floors all day. So let me give you the shortest version of today's podcast...that's complete nonsense. Let's take a look at why that is on today's episode of The MOVEMENT Movement podcast. Episode 70: The Best and WORST Shoes to Wear with Orthotics
What's the worst shoe that you could wear if you're wearing orthotics? And, what's the best shoe that you can wear if you're wearing orthotics? We're going to talk about that in today's episode of The MOVEMENT Movement podcast. If you're going to wear orthotics or insoles, you need to be very careful about what you're putting them in. Because, if you put them in the wrong shoe, it can not only make whatever situation you're dealing with, well, it can make the benefits disappear and it could also make the situation you're dealing with even worse. Why is that? We'll talk about that and much more... So, let's dive in... Episode 69: The Most Dangerous Shoes in the World
Can shoes be dangerous? Oh yes, they can. They can be be very dangerous. Today, we are going to talk about the most dangerous shoes in the world, right here on The MOVEMENT Movement podcast, the podcast for people who want to know the truth about what it takes to have a happy, healthy, strong body, starting feet first. So here's where this whole dangerous shoe thing came from, someone I was talking to recently said that he went to a running shoe store and they won't sell shoes like Xero Shoes because they're dangerous, the most dangerous shoes ever, he said. Okay. So, let's jump into this, and I have to tell you, there's really a funny thing, because if you go to running shoe stores, in like Europe, they don't tell you this story, they don't have this idea that something truly minimalist, something that lets your foot move naturally, is somehow dangerous. Episode 67: Get Fit and Strong Without a Gym
Research is really clear for runners, walkers, hikers, getting stronger is better, and now you can't go to the gym, but you might want to go back to the gym. Episode 66: Change Your Gait, Change Your Life
What are the most important lessons you could learn about getting in shape that you would get from 90-year-olds who were in a mall? We're going to find out why that may be true, and we have much, much more in today's episode of The MOVEMENT Movement Podcast, the podcast for people who want to know the truth about what it takes to have a happy, healthy, strong body, starting with the feet first, because those things are your foundation. Today my guest is Dr. Courtney Conley, the owner and operator of Total Health Solutions in Colorado. She also is the founder of Gait Happens. Her personal journey of becoming a foot and gait expert began years ago when she attended chiropractic school in Chicago, Illinois. She was fortunate enough to study under the top experts in her field. This began a long journey of working in several orthotic labs, wearing orthotics herself for years, and realizing that something was amiss as she was in constant pain chasing symptoms. She was a triathlete suffering from chronic foot, knee, and low back pain. After years of altering orthotics, and changing footwear, she realized that simply bracing the foot was not the answer. Always struggling with the concept: Why are we telling our patients with foot pain to brace the foot with an orthotic for years at a time when we would never tell our patients with low back pain to wear a back brace for years at a time. As a result, Dr. Conley went down the slow, and often frustrating journey of eliminating her orthotics and transitioning into the 'barefoot' world. She began assessing and treating her foot, like she did every where else in her body, with the goal of moving better and functioning more efficiently. Find out more about Dr. Conley at: Website: https://gaithappens.com Instagram: @GaitHappens If you have questions for me about the show, please email me, Steven Sashen, at move@jointhemovementmovement.com, or visit the website at www.jointhemovementmovement.com, and find what's going on, be part of the family of helping people discover and rediscover that natural movement is the obvious better healthy choice, just like natural food is... Episode 65: How to NOT Pick a Good Shoe
I'm going to give you some negative advice, how to not pick a good running shoe on today's episode of The MOVEMENT Movement podcast.  I think it's important to know how not to do things in order to inform how to do things. Even when I'm teaching people how to run naturally or run barefoot, I'll often have them exaggerate bad patterns because that way it really highlights what that pattern is and makes it easier to start doing something different.  I'm Steven Sashen from XeroShoes.com, your host of The MOVEMENT Movement podcast, where we're creating a movement about natural movement. And did I mentioned enjoyably? Yes, I know I did, but that's the most important part. If it ain't fun, do something different till it is. How do you fix your feet, relieve foot pain and create functional, healthy feet that will help you hike a mountain, run a marathon or just walk to get groceries? We’re going to find out more about that on today’s episode on The MOVEMENT Movement podcast with my special guest Petra Fisher. Episode 59: Native American Running Tips
Many people like to think this whole idea of barefoot running, or natural movement is new, but what if it's actually really old and we have not been learning from the masters of it?  Today's guest is Joseph Mora, originally from Southern California, he's been running on and off for most of his life, running in the bare foot fashion for about 10-12 years. Joseph has been a student of Native American thought and philosophy for most of his life. He lives in the Southwest and has a lot of roots there. He takes the philosophies, tenants of the Hopi way and the Native American way of being and running, and incorporates those into his lifestyle. We're going to find out more about that on today's episode of The MOVEMENT Movement Podcast, the podcast for people who want to know the truth about what it takes to run, to walk, to hike, or whatever it is you like to do, enjoy-ably, and effectively.  If you have any questions, just drop an email to move@jointhemovementmovement.com.  To connect with Joseph, his website will be available in June at aztlantimes.org.
